These dogs are relatively new, but they are already becoming popular. They are also known as Frenchie Shepherds and are loved for their intelligence and loving disposition. French Bulldog German Shepherd mixes are intelligent dogs that can be trained to do just about anything. They are also great with children, making them the perfect family pet. Yes, a French Bulldog can mate with a German Shepherd. These two breeds are of different sizes but can still produce offspring. The size difference can be a difficulty when attempting to mate two breeds naturally, as the smaller breed may have trouble mounting the larger dog. In most cases, artificial insemination is performed. Since the main difference between these two breeds is their size, puppies from this pairing will likely be in the middle, size-wise. Hence, to prevent trouble in birthing, the bigger breed is often chosen as the dam — in this case, the German Shepherd. The exact origin of this mixed breed is unknown, but it is believed to have originated in the United States. This mixed breed is a cross between the French Bulldog and the German Shepherd. These two breeds are quite different from one another, but they do share similar qualities. The English Bulldog was brought to France in the s by English immigrants. Frenchies were then created by breeding an English Bulldog with other small dog breeds, such as the Pug and terrier-type dogs. Meanwhile, the German Shepherd is a working dog breed that originated in Germany in the late s. They were originally bred for herding and guarding sheep. Today, German Shepherds are still used for these purposes, as well as for search and rescue, police work, and assistance dogs. If you are considering getting a French Bulldog German Shepherd mix, you should know that they make great family pets. They are loyal and loving dogs that will quickly become a cherished household member. This large breed has a strong and muscular body, similar to that of the German Shepherd. Meanwhile, it retains the distinctive facial features of the French Bulldog. The French Bulldog German Shepherd mix typically has a short, compact build with a broad chest and sturdy legs. Their head is large and round, and their muzzles are short and broad. This breed also has a long tail that tapers to the end. French Bulldog German Shepherd mixes have eyes that are almond-shaped and can be either brown or black. The body is long and muscular, with a slightly longer tail than average, with a curved tail. They have a short, smooth coat that is typically brown or black with some white markings. Some may also inherit the sable, blue, isabella, or even the panda coat color of the GSD, while others may have fawn or merle coats. They can weigh anywhere from 30 to 80 pounds and stand 18 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. They will typically mature at around 18 to 24 months. However, they can still put up more muscle mass until they are two years old. Their growth can also be affected by gender, exercise, and nutrition. It inherits the loyalty, courage, and protective instincts of the German Shepherd, along with the playfulness and affection of the French Bulldog. As a result, this mixed breed is an ideal family pet that will guard your home and provide endless hours of fun and companionship. Regarding personality, the French Bulldog German Shepherd mix is a true people-pleaser. This dog loves nothing more than being around its family and will go out of its way to make everyone happy. They are also very intelligent and easily trained, making them a breeze to live with. However, their high energy levels mean they need plenty of physical activities and mental stimulation to stay out of trouble. This hybrid makes an excellent companion for families with children. However, no dog is entirely free from health problems, and the French Bulldog German Shepherd mix is no exception. Some of the most common health problems of a French Bulldog German Shepherd mix are listed below: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: These are two of the most common orthopedic problems seen in French Bulldog German Shepherd mixes. Hip dysplasia is a condition where the hip joint does not form properly, resulting in pain and lameness. Elbow dysplasia is a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. It is caused by a deficiency of a protein called the von Willebrand factor. Allergies can be caused by various things, such as food, pollen, or flea bites. Allergies can cause itching, hair loss, and skin infections. Most of these conditions can be managed with proper care and treatment, and your dog can enjoy a long, healthy life. Therefore, it is important to be aware of these health issues when you own a French Bulldog German Shepherd mix. As an owner, it is important to be aware of the needs of your dog in order to keep them healthy and happy. Read along to learn more about caring for a Frenchie Shepherd. This will help to maintain their lean muscle mass and keep their energy levels up. They will also need moderate exercise to burn off any excess calories. After exercise, you can give them treats or dog-friendly crackers but avoid feeding them table scraps, as this can cause obesity and other issues. French Bulldog German Shepherds should have 2 to 3 cups of dog food per day, depending on their size and activity level. Feed them twice a day, making sure to remove any uneaten food after 30 minutes. If you need help with how much to feed your dog, talk to your veterinarian. You can also check out our French Bulldog and German Shepherd feeding guides for helpful tips. Cleaning and Grooming Your Frenchie Shepherd must be groomed regularly to keep its coat healthy and free of tangles. Brush their coat at least once a week using a soft-bristled brush. Ear cleaning should be done at least once a week using a cotton ball dampened with a gentle ear cleaner. Meanwhile, nail trimming should be done every two to three weeks using a nail trimmer designed for dogs. Training and Exercise Frenchie Shepherds need to be properly trained and exercised in order to stay healthy and happy. Proper training is essential for these dogs. They are intelligent dogs and learn quickly, but they can also be stubborn at times. It is important to be consistent with training, using positive reinforcement methods such as giving treats or praise. Frenchie Shepherds need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can be divided into several shorter walks. They also enjoy playing fetch and other interactive games. If you consistently provide your Frenchie Shepherd with daily exercise, you will have a happy and healthy dog that is a joy to be around. This price may already include initial vaccinations, deworming, spaying or neutering, and other primary vet care. For some reason, lace workers in England became very attached to the breed and when they emigrated to France they took them with them. Here they are known as the Frenchie. Von Stephanitz had in his mind what a good working dog should be and a few generations of breeding fulfilled what Hektor envisioned. Horand von Grafrath is known to be the first German Shepherd Dog. Horand von Grafrath was bred to other similar styled dogs that were believed to have the same traits as what Von Stephanitz was looking for. His most successful offspring was Hektor von Schwaben. Von Stephanitz is widely credited for being the founder of this incredible breed. Von Stephanitz had intended for his breed to work as herding dogs, however, as Germany became more and more industrialized he saw the need to make it working dog. He convinced the German government to use the breed. The breed initially became popular in World War 1. Many American and allied servicemen grew attached to the breed during the war and brought them back to the states after the war was over. The Allied troops fell in love with the breed but not with the fact that it had German roots. It became common for police departments and those looking for true working dogs to import their dogs from Germany because the American dogs had such bad health problems.

These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! I cannot fully articulate how delightful he is, you have to experience it for yourself to fully understand. As with almost all of our Bernedoodles, he will do well in just about any lifestyle and will be a loyal companion and friend for the family lucky enough to get him. This guy will be a loyal friend with his pleasing personality and laid back nature. Birthdate: Parents: Zuko and Fergie Just a few of the beautiful babies in our new litter. These large, fluffy dogs are known for their non-shedding coats and lovable personalities. Bernedoodles tend to be a great addition to any family! Although the Bernedoodle is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other dog registries. As long as they are properly socialized, they tend to be open and friendly dogs that get along well with just about anyone. These dogs tend to do well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they can be initially wary and watchful at first, they even tend to warm up quickly to strangers once introduced. Bernedoodles are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. Despite their size and energy, they can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise and attention. These dogs tend to handle the cold better than the heat; you may even have some trouble getting them to come back inside after some playtime in the snow. Because Bernedoodles bond so closely with their families and enjoy nothing more than being around them, they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to skin issues like sensitive skin, allergies, and hot spots. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large dog breed, the Standard Bernedoodle is also at risk for bloat like both parent breeds. The Bernedoodle is a highly intelligent and easily trained dog breed. Some facts about Bernedoodles are that they are a good fit for owners of any experience level and tend to pick up commands easily. Although they tend to grow out of this initial stubbornness with age, puppy training classes will certainly help with training and socialization early on. Bernedoodles tend to have a longer coat that ranges from curly to wavy. Although they tend to be non-shedding, they still need a lot of maintenance to keep their coat looking great. Daily brushing to remove tangles and prevent mats along with grooming every weeks are recommended. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing daily along and cleanings at the vet as needed are an ideal start to a good dental care routine for your Bernedoodle. Standard Bernedoodles can range from moderate to high energy. They tend to sit in a more moderate activity range and have bursts of higher energy when they play. These dogs are known to play hard and energetically until they are tired, but are not usually considered high-energy dogs. Daily walks plus playtime and some time to run should be enough for a Bernedoodle. But, these dogs will likely be up for more activity if you are. They will love the opportunity to spend more time being active with you. A fully-grown Standard Bernedoodle usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Standard Bernedoodles generally live for years on average. A Bernedoodle is also sometimes called a Bernese Mountain Poo. Featured Bernedoodle Article.

Exercises Grooming From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Our Boxer puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. Frequently Asked Questions Are Boxers good family pets? Blackfork Labradors breeding quality English AKC registered fox red labs, including yellow, chocolate and black Labradors. Our lab puppies are bred for companions, hunting, showing and therapy. Blackfork Labrador Retrievers specializes in breeding the fox red shade. We have fox red lab puppies available through out the year, along with black, chocolate and yellow Labrador pups. Blackfork Labs takes great pride in striving to improve our fox red labs taking into consideration health, temperament, soundness and the Labrador Retriever Breed Standard. Fox red is not a separate color of the Labrador but a shade of yellow. In the early years of the breed development, fox red or dark yellow was the original yellow shade of the Labrador Retriever. Fox red is the darkest shade of yellow Labradors. Tap the photo below for Fox Red Labrador Information When looking for a breeder that produces fox reds in their breeding program, it is very important that the following questions be asked: Do you have an overall goal for your breeding program? This goal should be more than just producing wonderful pets for families. Ask to see copies of clearances. It is very important that your breeder is doing annual eye CERFs to be certain that eye issues have not developed over time. Here at Blackfork Labradors we are striving to improve the overall standard of the fox red. I do not breed solely for depth of color. I spend hours researching pedigrees and calling other breeders to ask questions. That means there will be times that my fox reds will be bred to black stud dogs and yellows of all shades. Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. Just like any other Labrador, it will be important to dedicate their first few weeks in your home to getting them settled. Starting to work on important things like potty training and setting food habits. They really benefit from positive reinforcement training. Using rewards to help encourage them to behave in a way that will help them to fit nicely into your family. Start off with no more than a few minutes of formal exercise a day when they are small puppies. And work up to any big walks or runs very gradually over time so as not to accidentally hurt them. Did you turn up here hoping to learn about red fox Labs, only to find us referring to them as fox red instead? There are no consistencies in the way fox red Lab is spelled. Whether fox red is one word or two. Or whether the fox or the red comes first. Of course, we know fox red is much more special than that. At least it means you can spell it any way you like! I tend to say fox red Labrador, you can say redfox or red fox Labrador if it makes you happy. Ultimately they are all just gorgeous Labradors, with a darker shade to their yellow coat. More about Labrador Types and Colors! Life Span Did You Know? One of the facts about Labrador Retrievers is that there are a few distinct color coat variations. Fox Red Labradors are a rare-colored version of the Labrador Retriever. Despite this, they can be registered as purebred Yellow Labrador Retrievers , as the darker-colored coat is not considered to be a disqualifying factor. Due to their unique and certainly eye-catching color, the Fox Red Labrador continues to grow in popularity. Labrador Retrievers are known for being exceptionally sweet and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. These dogs yearn to be a part of a family, and fit right in when joining one. In fact, Labs are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Well-socialized Fox Red Labradors tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. After all, every person they meet is a potential friend that they can play with. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Despite their energy, Fox Red Labradors can adapt to most settings. As long as this dog breed has a chance to get in daily walks, go outside to run and play, and they get plenty of attention, they are content. They are not overly affected by cold weather, but they have a dense double coat. Fox Red Retrievers are also happiest when in the presence of people and they love to be with their families whenever possible. They also have a lot of energy and get bored easily. Potential health concerns to be aware of in Fox Red Labrador Retrievers can include hereditary myopathy, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, and cataracts. There is also a condition with a genetic link that can occur in young adult Labradors called exercise-induced collapse EIC. Carriers can be identified by DNA tests. Good breeding practices can reduce the risk of potential health issues and make a big difference in the health of Fox Red Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an EIC DNA test, and an ophthalmologist evaluation at a minimum. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Fox Red Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk of bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and are highly trainable. Although they can become stubborn at times, they are eager to please and pick up on training quickly overall. Their energy and intelligence mean they can lose focus in training and get bored easily. However, training that is kept clear, consistent, and focused on positive rewards usually keeps them focused and responding well. Any color variant of the Labrador Retriever is ideal for beginner dog owners. Fox Red Labrador Retrievers have a short, dense double coat that is water-resistant. They shed year-round and more heavily as the seasons change. Brushing their coat a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Because their coat tends to protect them from the cold and they are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , your Fox Red Lab may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. If they are an avid swimmer or tend to get into a lot of things, you may need to bathe them more often. It is highly recommended to give them a bath or at least rinse them off thoroughly after going swimming with your dog. Their nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly. This will help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs is essential for preventing the tartar buildup that lends to dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is a good start. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with dental hygiene chews, a special dental care diet, and more. Like other Labs, Fox Red Labrador Retrievers are high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. However, they will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Often, they are just happy to be spending time with you. Labs tend to have an extended puppyhood until they are around years old. They will mellow out a little, but also tend to maintain a puppy-like exuberance even in their senior years. Once they are done growing and your vet has cleared them for more activities, you can try a lot of different things. Labs are athletic and versatile dogs. They are one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures and tend to enjoy a variety of activities. They tend to excel in swimming, running, obstacle courses, and several dog sports. Fully-grown Fox Red Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Fox Red Labs generally live for years on average.

His temperament and intelligence are above average. At the vet I heard the vet and techs in the back gushing over how behaved he was and they sent me home with extra goodies for him hehe. He's already house trained. I've already been able to teach him two commands "here" and "place". He's also the best snuggler and is sooo very patient and forgiving with my tornado of a two year old son. He is the best dog I've had in my entire life and love him to the moon. I can't wait until he's old enough to start going on adventures with us. Thank ya'll for a wonderful dog! We get soooo much attention with her! We've had people literally pull off the road just to comment on her! Lots of people asking if we are going to breed her! We are meeting with someone on Friday to evaluate her for protection training. She's my girl and she knows her job well! Btw, people always ask me where I got her.I tell them all about you guys! Here are pictures of Liberty sunbathing with her sister, Queen Bitsy! Where Do Pets Fly in the Aircraft? Animals that are very young less than 9 weeks old , very old, chronically ill, pets that are debilitated, or animals with other special medical conditions. If you own a pet that has difficulty in warm environments, use extreme caution when transporting your animal to anywhere in the chain of islands. Keep in mind that high humidity and associated high temperatures generally peak during the summer months of May through October. Owners of pets with certain sensitivities or other medical requirements must register and arrange for quarantine of their pet at an approved veterinary hospital before arrival. Travel Tip: Your pet can be quarantined on Kauai or the Big Island, as there are satellite quarantine stations on these Hawaiian Islands. Owners must make prior arrangements with these privately-run facilities. Should a vet clear your young pet to begin the vaccines and take the blood test immediately, it will still take a minimum of 4. The reason? For your pet to be eligible for the 5-day quarantine, days must pass after their blood test is received at the lab. Below is a rough estimate of what that might cost if you choose to go with Direct Airport Release and fly your feline to Maui or another neighbor island other than Oahu. If your pet arrives early, it will not qualify for the shorter quarantine program. Your pet must remain in quarantine until it has completed the day waiting period after passing an OIE-FAVN rabies serological test. Pets Not Picked Up Upon Arrival: If you are unable to pick up your pet upon arrival, your pet will be transported to the Animal Quarantine Station in Halawa Valley on Oahu or to an approved animal holding facility on a neighbor island. A Neighbor Island Inspection Permit must be presented to the airline prior to boarding and is required to fly your cat or dog directly to an approved neighbor island airport. You may pay the required fees on-site at the airport. Interested in faster processing? Please Note: There are no discounts for multiple pets. There are also no discounts for owners that provide food for their pet. The U. Military members should check with their command on whether this is available to them. Puppy pads Create a Schedule Golden Retriever pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. It can even grow louder as they age. Moderate Training Golden Retrievers responds well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. The following list of active ingredients are accepted for tick treatment oral products : Fluralaner Sarolaner Lotilaner We recommend that you consult with your veterinarian to determine what products are safe to use on your dog, and what dose and application directions should be followed. A licensed veterinarian must complete a Health Certificate for Hawaii in English. It must be an original, photocopies will not be accepted. Since the documents must be processed within 14 days of your arrival, you must send them by an overnight carrier to qualify for airport release of your pet. You can find the current fees on hawaii. Do all dogs have to be quarantined to go to Hawaii? Not all dogs are required to stay in Hawaiian quarantine. Dogs can spend anywhere between 0 and days in quarantine upon arrival in Hawaii. Hawaii has a 5 day or less quarantine programme, which has a provision for direct release at Honolulu International Airport after inspection. If you want to qualify, you must ensure your dog meets all the requirements listed above — microchipping, rabies vaccination, rabies titer test if applicable , tick treatment, health certificate and import permit. If your dog does not meet all the requirements for the 5 day or less programme, may be quarantined for up to days upon arrival in Hawaii. Flying service dogs to Hawaii Guide dogs for the blind and certified service dogs for the physically disabled must complete pre-shipment requirements. The work or tasks include but are not limited to: assisting individuals who are blind or have low vision with navigation and other tasks, alerting individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to the presence of people or sounds, pulling a wheelchair, assisting an individual during a seizure, providing physical support and assistance with balance and stability to individuals with mobility disabilities, and helping persons with psychiatric and neurological disabilities by preventing or interrupting impulsive or destructive behavior. These must be listed on a health certificate issued more than 30 days before travel. The certificate must also show the dog has been treated for ticks within 14 days of travel. Proof of certification must be provided, and must state the task s that the dog has been trained to perform. All documentation should be sent to the Rabies Quarantine Branch well ahead of your intended arrival date. They will ensure the dog meets all of the requirements and check the dog for external parasites. If everything is in order, the dog will be released at that point. Emotional support dogs ESA that provide support for well-being, comfort, or companionship do not meet the definition of a service dog. What airlines allow flying a dog to Hawaii? Most airlines allow flying a dog to Hawaii. However, depending on the airline you fly with, pet policies differ. Fees also vary between airlines. According to US law, no domestic airline can refuse travel to licensed service animals. Requirements for service animals differ because they need to stay with their owners. With that said, owners will need to provide extra certification, to prove the dog qualifies as a service dog. Guidelines for Dog Carriers If you are flying to Hawaii with a dog, it is important that you use a pet carrier that is approved by your airline. Different airlines have different pet carrier policies, which often vary between aircrafts and routes. Check that your pet carrier is approved for your chosen airline, aircraft and route. Thus, inside their travel carriers, pets must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in their kennel without touching any side or the top of the container. Furthermore, the rules for pet carriers also vary depending on whether you will be flying to Hawaii with your dog in cabin or cargo. If you are travelling in the cabin with your dog, then you will need to ensure that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. This is why, generally, only small dogs weighing under kg are permitted in the cabin. Additionally, airlines often require that dogs are obedient to your commands and can behave appropriately in public. If your dog does not behave in an appropriate manner, some airlines may transfer him to the cargo hold at an additional cost, or refuse to transport him all together. Some airlines require a consent form to ensure your pet is flight-ready. Can you take your dog on vacation to Hawaii? How to take your dog to Hawaii without quarantine The Hawaii Department of Agriculture has checklists to walk you through the process of taking your dog to Hawaii. They are a great resource, but in truth, I found it to be a little confusing at times. There are multiple checklists to choose from, depending on your situation. Our dog was ready to leave the cold of England for the beaches of Maui. Step 1: Ensure your dog has a working microchip This is important to get right before starting your process: ensure your dog has a working microchip. The microchip number will be used to identify your dog upon arrival in Hawaii and the number is used on the blood test that your dog will need to pass. Hattie enjoyed her last bike ride through Hyde Park in London before her move to Hawaii. Step 2: Get your dog two rabies vaccinations Hawaii is a rabies-free state amazing! Hawaii is the only rabies-free state in the union. That means they need to make sure that every animal coming into the state has enough rabies antibodies built up in their bloodstream. To do that, your dog needs to have had at least two rabies vaccinations in their lifetime, and the most recent rabies vaccination must be active not expired before they arrive in Hawaii. The vaccines needed to be 30 days apart and we needed to also wait 30 days after the second vaccine to do her blood test. Planning and plenty of time are key to ensure that you get this all done before you want to bring your dog to Hawaii! Hattie charmed her way through Heathrow security and on all her flights to Hawaii. This was the most complicated part of the process for us as we were coming from the UK. Provide your vet with the lab names and they should be able to coordinate getting samples shipped to them. You should also receive a copy of the results from your vet If you want to check the status of the test and ensure the results were received by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, you can search using the Animal Quarantine Microchip Search. Free Download! By signing up, you agree to our Privacy Policy. We hate spam and promise to keep your email safe. Unsubscribe at any time. Before you apply for a permit, you should do two things: Find a vet inspector on the island to meet you at the airport and clear your dog. Book a flight with an airline that participates in the direct airport release program. We flew with Alaska and had no problems. We were really nervous about getting the permit back in time for our flight. So treat this permit like gold. Share via Email Poodles are widely recognized for their iconic curly coats, which contribute to their unique and elegant appearance. However, not all poodles possess these distinct curls. In this article, we delve into the intriguing world of poodle fur and explore the reasons behind why certain poodles have straight hair instead of the expected curls. The Diversity of Poodle Coats When we think of poodles, we often envision those adorable, curly-haired canines strutting their stuff in the show ring. But did you know that poodle coats can vary significantly? The breed standard classifies poodle coats into three distinct types: curly, corded, and wavy. These straight-haired poodles, though less common, still possess the same lovable traits and intelligence that poodles are known for. Genetic Factors at Play To understand why some poodles have straight hair, we must consider genetics. However, not all poodles inherit two copies of this gene. Puppies that inherit only one copy or lack the curl gene altogether may develop straight hair instead of curls. The inheritance pattern is complex, and various factors can influence the expression of the curl gene, leading to a diverse range of coat textures within the poodle breed. Curly hair is not present in newborn poodle puppies. During this time, the coat transitions from the soft, fluffy puppy fur to the more mature adult coat. The curls gradually form as the new hair grows in, and it may take several months for the curls to fully develop. While straight hair may not be the norm for poodles, it is a natural and valid variation within the breed. Genetic factors, as well as external influences, contribute to the presence of straight hair in certain poodles. So, whether your poodle has straight hair, long straight hair, or the expected curly coat, embrace their unique beauty. FAQ Can poodles have long straight hair? Yes, poodles can have long straight hair. While the breed is commonly known for its curly coats, some poodles exhibit straight hair as a natural variation. These straight-haired poodles may have long flowing locks that differ from the typical curly appearance. Poodles typically start developing their curls when their adult coat grows in, which usually happens around six to eight months of age. As the soft puppy fur is replaced by the mature adult coat, the curls gradually form. Some may have more defined curls earlier, while others may take longer for their curls to fully develop. When does poodle hair transition from straight to curly? The presence of straight or curly hair in poodles is primarily determined by their genetics. What is the best food for my poodle? What is the best food for your dog? The three foods that are super healthy and that almost every dog loves, even the pickiest dogs, are: 1. There are a number of fresh frozen dog foods available on the market and I tested them all. You can see the fresh frozen food test here. Why does my poodle have straight hair? The poodle is a popular breed of dog that is known for its curly coat. However, not all poodles have curly hair. Some poodles have straight hair, and this can be due to a number of factors. One reason why some poodles have straight hair is because they are mixed with another breed of dog that has straight hair. For example, the labradoodle is a popular mix between a poodle and a Labrador retriever. This mix often results in a dog with straighter hair, as the Labrador retriever has a straight or wavy coat. Another reason why some poodles have straight hair is because they have a straighter coat. This is often seen in Standard Poodles, as their coat is not as curly as the coats of other poodle varieties. Standard Poodles can also have a wavy coat, but this is not as common. Some poodles may also have straight hair due to genetics. If both parents have straighter coats, then their puppies are more likely to inherit this trait. Additionally, adults with straighter coats are more likely to produce offspring with straighter coats. Are poodles born with straight hair? Poodle coats can be either straight or curly, but most poodles are born with straight hair. The coat of a poodle pup will usually start to shed and curl as they reach adulthood. Poodles are born with a soft puppy coat that will eventually turn into their adult coat. The type of coat a poodle has is determined by their dog breed. Poodles can be either Standard, Miniature, or Toy. Standard poodles have the heaviest coat, while Toy poodles have the lightest coat. Poodles are born with a straight or wavy coat, but as they mature, their coat will gradually become more curly. Toy and miniature poodles will usually have a wavy coat, while standard poodles will have a curly coat. Puppies typically shed their baby coats around six to eight months of age. This is when their adult coats start to come in. The new coat may be wavy or curly, depending on the type of poodle. Toy and miniature poodles usually have a wavy coat, while standard poodles have a curly coat. Some poodles have fluffy coats while others have very tight curls. The type of coat your poodle has is determined by genetics and cannot be changed. Can toy poodles have straight hair? Toy poodles can have straight hair, but it is not common. Most toy and miniature poodles have curly or wavy hair. Standard poodles can have either straight or curly hair. The adult coat of a toy poodle may be either straight or curly, but the coat of a miniature poodle is usually wavy. Toy and miniature poodles may have their coats trimmed to look like they have straight hair, but the hair will usually return to its natural state within a few months of age. Poodles have a very thick coat that does not tangle easily. If you use hair straighteners on them, you may cause their coat to become frizzy and dry. Can Poodles have Naturally Straight Hair? Poodles are known for their curly hair, but did you know that some poodles can have naturally straight hair? While most poodles have curly hair, there is a small percentage of poodles that are born with straight hair. Doodle puppies are often mistaken for golden retriever or labrador puppies at first glance because of their straighter coat. However, as the pup grows older, their coat will begin to form tight curls around the head and body, giving them that signature poodle look. Some doodles may have more of a curl than others, while some may have fluffy, straighter hair. No matter what type of coat your doodle has, they will always need to be groomed to keep their hair looking its best. The coat may become more curly or even kinky in texture. Some poodles will have very curly hair, while others will have only a slight curl. Puppies usually have a softer, fluffier coat that may change in texture and appearance as they mature. Poodles with their curly hair are the cutest. However, owners do sometimes wish they were easier to brush. So can Poodles have straight hair? Poodles love to be groomed, and when you are running a brush through their hair, it can be very rewarding to see a toothy smile on their face. However, because of their curly hair, Poodles can be a chore to brush. Can Poodles Have Straight Hair? All Poodles have naturally curly hair. A Poodle puppy has straight hair up till it achieves full maturity. However, pureblood Poodles will all attain curly locks in a few years. Some mixed breeds may have straight hair, known as an improper coat. If you are a dog lover and are looking for a Poodle with straight hair, I can tell you that there is no such pure breed. I can help you understand the type of coats a Poodle has and when Poodle puppies start to get curly hair. I can help you understand how to appreciate the curly hair of your Poodle more. Do you know that a Poodle is a water dog breed? This is the reason why they have bouncy curls, unlike the vast majority of dogs that have straight coats. Poodles were bred specifically to have tight curls because they would help protect them from the cold temperature of the water. Originally, Poodles were used as hunting dogs. Over time, people realized these water dogs were highly intelligent and hence Poodles started working in a variety of fields, including sailing, seafaring, and military. Hence, they were used for a variety of purposes like retrieving goose, fowls, and other game birds shot by hunters, retrieving objects that have fallen overboard, and passing messages between ships. Since they are so smart and have curly hair, they are at the top of the list of working dogs. Poodles only have a single layer of coat that keeps them warm, unlike most dogs that have a top coat and an undercoat of fur. The coat of an adult Poodle is thick, curly, and dense and has a cotton candy or fluffy cloud-like appearance. However, it is quite wiry to the touch. This is because this coat was designed to help the pooch repel water and help in its role as a water retriever. The dense, curly hair prevents the water from reaching their skin and keeps them warm in cold waters. The fancy haircut that Poodles are famous for was not originally just for show. Although some of us think that these cuts make the pooch look silly, they actually have a practical application. Since Poodles have thick and curly hair, it can get quite heavy when wet, which can slow down the dog in the water. Today, the Poodle is still used as a working dog by people in many fields so that haircut has stayed on. However, it is more popularly known as the look for a show dog. Types of Poodle Hair Although adult Poodles are supposed to have curly and wiry hair, you will find that many Poodles have different hair. Puppy Coat After Poodles are born, they will have a straight puppy coat. This hair will be thin, wispy, and very soft but will grow thicker and curlier as the puppy ages. Typically, your Poodle will have a puppy coat till it is around 12 months old and sometimes even longer than that. Curly Coat As the Poodle transitions to adulthood, its coat will become dense, wiry, and curly that covers it from top to bottom. This coat is non-shedding and hence considered hypoallergenic. However, a Poodle will shed a few hairs once in a while, so it is important to keep its coat brushed and groomed so that it does not become matted. Improper Coat An improper coat is a Poodle coat that has a straight or somewhat wavy texture. Every Poodle should have two variations of the chromosome that results in a thick and curly coat. However, improper breeding when breeders fail to test their canines that carry only one of these chromosomes can lead to a somewhat straight coat or a patchy coat with wavy patches. This process is genetic and can be passed down to the puppies as well. In this case, the Poodle will have a coat that resembles the coat of a Poodle puppy. Although there could be waves and curls on their coat, the Poodles will lack the denseness and the tightness of the curls that people appreciate in pure Poodles. Good breeders eliminate the non-curling chromosome from the breeding process and ensure that every Poodle inherits and exhibits the perfect characteristics of evenly curled hair as well as check the Poodle for coat patterns or hereditary illnesses. If you have a Poodle, you may be wondering when its hair would grow curly. Typically, Toy and Mini Poodles will start their transition from their smooth coat to a curly coat from the age of 9 months and will achieve a perfectly curly coat by the time they are 18 to 24 months old. Standard Poodles will also start getting curly hair at the age of 9 months but they will get a full coat of curls by the time they are 1 year old. They will also need daily brushing if you want to keep their coat long since the soft puppy coat will tangle with dense and wiry curls if not groomed properly. Once the adult coat has fully developed, your puppy will no longer shed its hair as much as other straight-coat breeds. Not all Poodles you see have curly hair. Since the Poodle is a popular breed, there are several unscrupulous breeders who are reproducing Poodles without checking or understanding the breed standard or performing health tests on the Poodle. I understand that you will love your Poodle, no matter the type of coat it has, but it is just as important to consider that they are healthy and have the right temperament so that they can become a part of your family for a long time. English Saddle clip Continental clip A poodle can have any of the above hair types or some combination of them. Read on to find out more about the different types of poodle hair. Types of Poodle Hair Explained There are many types of poodle hair that you can find on poodles, and these different hairstyles are dependent on the grooming practices used as well as the age and breeding stock that the dog comes from. This hair type starts out as super soft, thin, wispy, and straight, but begins to grow curly and denser around the base as the pup grows older. Curly Coat Once a poodle transitions out of its puppy coat, it develops a thick curly hair type that covers the entire dog from head to toe. This coat is non-shedding and hypoallergenic; while poodles are well-known for their lack of shedding, this also means that their curly coat needs constant maintenance to avoid matting. Corded Coat Another hair type seen less commonly in poodles but commonly seen in other water dogs, such as the Portuguese water dog , is the corded coat. Improper Coat Unfortunately, due to a lack of careful selection during breeding, many poodles that are kept as companion animals rather than show dogs exhibit an improper coat, at least with regard to the breed standard. Improper coats are not curly throughout and will often exhibit soft waves in patches or across the entire dog. Improper coats are easier to brush, but a fault in the show. This kind of hairstyle is practical for pet poodles but is also the only cut permissible in a competitive show for any poodle under twelve months of age. English Saddle Clip An English saddle clip on a poodle is what most people think of when they imagine a fancy cartoon poodle—legs, tail, and chest cut into elaborate pom-poms, with shaved sections in between each ball of hair. This hairstyle was much more popular in the mid-twentieth century than it is today when puppy clips are more popular outside of dog shows. The clip has also lost popularity in dog shows, as it is not flattering to many dogs and is said to disguise the lines of the dog, making it a less attractive choice during judging. The English saddle clip is generally considered to be a poor choice for soft-coated dogs. Continental Clip A Continental clip is a similar hairstyle on a poodle to an English saddle clip, with the major difference being how the rear legs and back are cut. In an English saddle clip, the rear legs are cut into a series of pom-poms, whereas in the Continental clip, these sections are shaved. A Continental clip, like an English saddle clip, can be very difficult to maintain. Check out this article I recently wrote on 25 haircuts for poodles. Poodles and Hypoallergenic Hair One of the major advantages of poodles is that their hair is hypoallergenic, which means that it does not tend to cause problems for most people who have dog allergies. This makes poodles a good pet choice for anyone who wants a dog but is susceptible to the sniffles and leaky eyes around them. If you are on a budget, it may be more economical to purchase an allergy kit from Amazon. My favorite is the 5Strands deluxe tester. With this test kit, you can easily test for any pet-related allergies you may have. Check it out here on Amazon for more information and current pricing. While many dogs such as golden retrievers have a double coat, which is comprised of a soft undercoat that is protected by an outer layer of guard hairs, poodles only have a single coat. The biggest difference between the two coat types is that single-coated dogs do not shed and are considered hypoallergenic. Double-coated dogs tend to shed throughout the season and are a bane for those with allergies since their shedding also results in a lot of lost dander that tends to cause allergies to act up. Does Poodle Hair Stop Growing? In most cases, this is a very undesirable outcome. This coat type can be seen in other water dogs, too, such as the Portuguese water dog. But to make sure that the cords are presentable for exhibition, groomers will train them for a uniform appearance. Problems with Poodle Hair Despite the fact that it is hypoallergenic and lovely to look at, poodle hair comes with its own particular set of grooming and health problems. The hair of poodles has a tendency to thin and fall out, especially in female dogs that are going through heat or other hormonal surges. Here are some other common issues with poodle hair: Alopecia X: This is a balding condition caused by growth hormone deficiencies during the transition to adulthood in poodles and can cause loss of hair along both sides of the body. Luckily this is strictly a cosmetic issue for poodles generally caused by poor breeding practices and does not cause any other health problems. Allergies: Like many purebred dogs that have enjoyed an immense amount of popularity, some poodle breeding lines have developed a series of allergies to things like food and shampoos that affect the skin, eyes, and hair. Excessive itchiness can cause a poodle to scratch its own hair out eventually, and even form sores and hot spots. Sebaceous Adenitis: Like alopecia X, this is a hereditary disease of poodles and other breeds that are caused by poor breeding practices. Neutering is the recommended treatment or spaying, as the condition can show up in females too. The main cause of matting on a poodle is not brushing a poodle correctly or often enough. The cure for matting is to work the mat out with a proper grooming tool and brush the dog properly or more often going forward to avoid the formation of new mats. Matting can become severe if not addressed early on, and if matting becomes too serious, the only option is to cut the mass of hair off the poodle entirely or shave it down to the skin in the area where the mat is located. Obviously, for show coats, this can be extremely detrimental. The best preventative to avoid mats is to set up a strict and regular grooming schedule for your poodle. As long as a poodle is brushed regularly, their coats are not that much more difficult to manage than many other breeds of dog. Once a puppy is used to the process of being brushed, it will be much easier to train the poodle to stand still, and the process of brushing becomes a much quicker and more enjoyable process. The easiest way to regularly brush a poodle is to train it to stand and stay on a table. Training dogs to give a paw readily can be helpful for simplifying this process, as many dogs are naturally reluctant to let anyone handle their feet. Teaching the poodle to respond to simple positioning commands can be very useful in accomplishing this. The more careful you are in grooming the dog, the more trust you will build up and the less reluctant the dog will be to get brushed. As you work, spray each section with a conditioning spray to reduce potential tangles. Note: This is especially important on darker-colored poodles, such as black or chocolate poodles, since fleas and ticks will not show up as readily against their hair as in lighter-colored dogs. Be sure to talk calmly to the poodle throughout this process and offer treats when they are behaving correctly, as this will encourage good behavior in the future. Once the coat is brushed out, the poodle can then be bathed. If you own a poodle pup, you may encounter some special challenges when it comes to grooming. I wrote a comprehensive guide all about how to groom your Poodle puppy. Check it out here. Home Grooming vs. Professional Grooming Many people are intimidated by the grooming of poodles and assume that to keep a poodle looking good, they have to be professionally groomed much more often than the average dog. The downside is that it takes a bit of practice grooming a poodle in order to do it well. Since a poodle is years of commitment and professional grooming can cost thousands of dollars over the course of its life, it can be a financial good investment to learn how to groom your poodle early on. Plus, it also acts as a good bonding activity. Bathing Poodle Hair In order to maintain a good coat condition, poodles should ideally be bathed approximately once every three weeks. Too much bathing can also irritate the skin or make existing skin irritations worse. I recently wrote this article on how to properly give your poodle a bath. Poodle Hair: Fussy but Not Complicated While poodle hair can be somewhat fussy to deal with compared to a smooth-haired breed of dog like a hound, these majestic dogs can be easily maintained with just a few tools and some regular brushing. Consistent brushing is the key, not fancy tools or professional grooming. I hope you found it helpful. Is it Dangerous to Straighten a Poodles Hair? Can Poodles have Naturally Straight Hair? Yes, he can actually but only while he is a puppy. As your pup gets older his coat will start to change and develop tight curls around the base. The coat becomes a little difficult to manage at this stage and this is the ideal time for him to have his first full groom rather than just a puppy trim. Why does my Poodle have Straight Hair? These genes prevent the keratin in the hair from binding in the normal way and results in curly hair. This gene is dominant and as such a dog only needs one copy of the curl gene to exhibit curly or wavy hair think Doodle, a retriever does not carry the curl gene, but a Poodle does so F1 Doodles have one copy of the curl gene and all Poodles SHOULD carry two copies of this gene. I say SHOULD because unfortunately, due to lack of genetic testing when selecting dogs to be bred from, some Poodles around only carry one copy of the curl gene. The coat is in this situation stays similar to the Poodle puppy coat and although there may still be waves or curls the coat will lack the density and tight curls that we desire in our Poodles. There are many beautiful breeds of dogs around with coat types to suit everyone. However, I have heard people say they have seen a beautiful Poodle with straight hair on a few occasions. Usually, this is a case of mistaken identity and they have actually seen an Afghan Hound who with his long, pointed nose, long legs, and graceful movement could perhaps be seen as similar looking. There is a downside to curly coats though and that is the fact that they take a lot of hard work to keep tangle-free. As anyone who has curly hair themselves will tell you, curly hair tangles and can be difficult to brush and if you choose to own a Poodle you will need to spend time every day combing his coat right through to the skin. He will also require clipping, either at home or the salon at least every eight weeks. When a groomer clips a Poodle, he needs the hair to be straight to achieve a neat finish and when you collect your Poodle after his appointment you will see his coat is less curly and looks fluffier than usual. Read on to find out why this is! Fluff drying is used by groomers to achieve an even cut and give the beautiful velvety finish the coat needs to be blown straight. It is also a very useful technique to learn yourself at home as a fluff-dried coat is much easier to comb and get tangle-free. I fluff dry my Poodle and Doodles every day after their walk before I groom them even if they not wet. The most important tool you need is a force dryer, also known as a blaster. This takes a little practice but is not difficult once you get the hang of it. Work on a section of coat at a time and aiming the nozzle towards the root of the hair blow the coat in the direction it grows. You will need a pin brush or slicker to help you here and brush in the same direction that you are blowing the hair whilst keeping the air stream steady. Remember to keep the power on low for delicate areas. Continue all over until the hair is dry and straight. As a finishing touch, you need to comb your pet all over using a metal comb. If your Poodle is still not straight enough you can spritz the coat lightly using water in a spray bottle and repeat. Fluff drying your Poodles coat is not dangerous if done carefully but you must take care to keep the power and heat low on sensitive areas such as the face and ears. You should also be careful and always blast with the hair to avoid knots. Get yourself a blaster dryer and enjoy safely grooming your Poodle. We recommend this blaster from Amazon.

The color and the controversy The white Pug is in fact yes a Pug. Contrary to what some negative breeders are saying, YES, they can be registered with the AKC, but because of the Pug parent Club, they are not permitted in the show ring. This is only reserved for the standard Fawn and Black colors at this time. So what is the big deal some might ask, or how did this color come into existence.Well good questions. Lets start with what is the big deal. To those of us serious about the Pug breed it is important to us, to enter in fresh and new bloodlines. For so many generations only the Fawn Pug was considered right and proper, and any other color or variation was put down right away. And we are finding out, that many of these colors and variations have genes attached which are now again being realized, because frankly, responsible breeders are not killing puppies, if they are too dark or too light anymore. The big deal is we are now seeing colors that represent the Pug breed in every way as far as structure and personality, but they have a different color, and in our opinion it is amazing and awesome. The white color is brilliant and unique. It also gives people with a great love of Pugs to have a colorful collection, while still enjoying the calm loving nature of the Pug breed. Now for the question of how this color came in to existence.Nobody truly knows. There is photographic evidence of white Pugs that belonged to royalty. BUT, we do not have proof in lineage that these dogs were bred, or used in any kind of kennel registry. Most white Pugs today can credit their heritage to a small breeder in Pennsylvania, that somehow had a White Pug born and then he duplicated it. His name was John Lapp, and some of his dogs made their way to the west coast where breeders there worked hard to duplicate the color, by using only Pugs in their programs and then breeding these whites into existing Pug lineages. The result is today's white Pug. Brilliant in every way, and has the same personality as any other colored Pug. In our opinion, it is SO much better to see responsible and reputable AKC breeders of the Pug breed working at new and radiant colors and variations, than those who think taking the Pug dog and matching it up to other breeds, in the thought that they would duplicate somehow the personality of the Pug. With many "new" breeds being created for no other purpose than to make a quick buck, and shows zero heritage or lineage, using dogs that for whatever reason were not good enough to be bred up with their own kind. Please also do not believe some ignorant "show" breeders who state quite openly that white Pugs can not be registered, or are not Pugs, but an abomination created mixing with another breed. They are NOT. They only issue chance in the DNA is the coloration, which is apparently present. It is almost like saying that a person born from one black parent and one white parent is not a person. They are the same as everybody else with a small difference in coloration. SO, with all this in mind. Some of us who are responsible breeders and with only AKC Pug dogs decided we needed to join together. Stand up for the White Pug, and all the other Pugs who do not fit into the color mold of fawn or black. We have been also reaching out all over the world for new and fresh bloodlines. The web address is www. Some of our friends in Europe are working at even more and unique colors, and yes they are mixing other breeds to accomplish this, but then once the color is accomplished they breed back to a Pug parent. But it does provide hope to all the many Pug lovers worldwide that we can still have the personality and structure of a Pug, but just in another color. She comes from a great lineage of White Pugs, and we were so proud to work with Hollands Happy Pugs to create our first white Pug litter. But we did not and will not stop there, as we now continue to work at and create a white lineage with the unique Celtic heritage of our Pugs. Always looking to the bright future of all Pugs! Conclusion Origin and Physical Appearance The white-colored pug is a result of selective breeding. The American Kennel Club mentions only two varieties that is black and fawn and does not certify white one, as it is crossbred. These are often confused with the albino pug due to their coat color. These have a pure white coat with a dark muzzle on their neck. Breeders tend to charge more for designer dogs and continue to crossbreed due to their demand because it is a distinct color not possessed by all. Rarity These are extremely rare, and I am sure you must have spotted one in pictures only if you have ever seen them. A Controversial Breed? Yes, you heard it right. This is a controversial breed due to its origin. Interesting Fact There is a famous white pug, named Marshmallow, you can find him all over the internet. It looks so adorable and angelic that I am sure you will be mesmerized just by one look. Conclusion Despite being a controversial variety, these are still in demand, so breeders continue breeding. Post navigation. Keeping their coats clean White Pug Genetics There are a small handful of special genetic recipes which can cause dogs to have white coats. One is the white spotting series of genes. The white spotting genes cause patches of white — which can be small, or so large they cover the entire body. None of the white spotting genes naturally occur in the Pug breed. But they can be introduced by outcrossing with other breeds. Another gene which causes white fur is the recessive gene for albinism. Different genes cause albinism in different breeds. The gene which causes albinism in Pugs is recessive. White Pug Temperament The temperament of a white coated Pug will depend upon how they came to be white. A purebred Pug with a very pale fawn coat is likely to be the closest match to these qualities. However, breeding for color can have pitfalls. Prioritising color over temperament means that character flaws might be passed on, as a trade off for achieving a paler coat. For example, a breeder might overlook a history of severe separation anxiety. What About Albinos and Mixes? A purebred albino Pug should, in theory, also have a very typically Pug-like personality. Finally, Pug-mix dogs with white spotting genes will have a personality that combines elements of the Pug, and other dogs in their family tree. White Pug Health Sadly, the Pug breed is notable for its overall poor health. A white Pug will share these issues. In the region of two thirds have painful hip deformities caused by either hip dysplasia or Legg-Perthes disease. About two thirds of Pugs also suffer from elbow dysplasia. The extreme flattening of their face puts them at high risk of breathing difficulties and damage to their corneas. Their screw tail is linked to spinal deformities and spina bifida type diseases. Further complications of being white If a breeder prioritises choosing a sire and dam by their colors, and compromises on their health in order to achieve light colored puppies, then the overall health of the puppies can decline even further. Albinism, meanwhile, is linked to increased light sensitivity, and higher risk of skin cancer. Which can make them partially or completely blind. This can have a knock-on effect on their temperament, which might be more cautious or easily startled. The health of Pug crosses will depend on both the overall health of their Pug parent, and the health of their other ancestors. For example, creating white dogs by deliberately introducing the Extreme White gene from the white spotting series is linked to increased hereditary deafness and hearing loss too. However, crossing Pugs with dogs breeds that have a healthier body structure may also result in a puppy which is healthier overall than a purebred Pug. White Pug Grooming All Pugs need careful daily attention to their grooming , and the palest colored Pugs even more so. Pugs are very prone to trouble with their anal glands. So to avoid leakages, or explosive squirting of anal fluids when you least expect it, you may need to pay your vet to empty them every few weeks. Or learn how to do it yourself. The wrinkles on their faces create warm, humid creases which are an ideal breeding ground for fungal and bacterial infections. So they need to be gently cleaned every day. In white Pugs this makes their face more prone to tear staining as well. Tear stains are reddish brown marks around the eyes caused by porphyrin in the tears. Your White Pug White Pugs are an unusual color that falls outside of the breed standard. Sadly, due to the many health problems affecting Pugs, which seriously compromise their welfare, we cannot recommend them as pets. When white Pugs are created by selective breeding for pale fawn coats, these health problems are likely to be made even worse. Albino Pugs have extra health problems caused by their albinism. White Pugs created by crossing with other breeds may not have the same temperament as purebred Pugs. But they are the most likely to be healthier. These lovable pups are wildly popular and the perfect match for many families. They come in a wide variety of colors and coats, including all white—which is relatively rare. Here are just a few white Pugs whose humans share their lives on Instagram. Sometimes, he gets both! Sugar Sugar is a five-year-old white Pug who has an all-black Pug sister named Pepper! Why the Controversy? White Pugs are usually the result of a genetic mutation, but some breeders have attempted to produce white Pugs through selectively breeding dogs with genetic predispositions for albinism and leucism. Albinism is an inherited disorder that affects melanin production. Pugs with albinism produce zero melanin, and will have fully white fur, pale pink skin, and pale pinkish eyes. Leucism reduces but does not fully eliminate melanin production, and leucistic Pugs will typically have white or cream fur and light blue or brown eyes. Albinism and in some cases, leucism can cause vision impairments and blindness, sun sensitivity, and increased susceptibility to certain cancers. When breeders pair dogs that carry the genetic markers for albinism, they risk producing puppies with serious health issues and special needs that require additional care both financially and physically from their families. The controversy is based purely on the fact that it is unethical to purposefully produce dogs that are likely to have physical disabilities and health risks. Breeders eager to make profits prey on unsuspecting dog lovers and use the power of scarcity and exoticism to sell white Pugs. Unfortunately, many of these pugs find themselves in homes that are not prepared to support their special needs, putting them at risk of abandonment and neglect. White Pug Basic Info White Pugs are purebred Pugs displaying a specific phenotype of a genetic mutation, and will share all the same general characteristics of typical fawn and black Pugs. Here are some of the basics about this breed. In truth, white Pugs are typically albino or leucistic, though some may be mixed breed dogs whose parentage includes breeds known to typically have white coats. But as the breed was bred, these were seen as desirable characteristics and so they were brought forward to what the modern day Pug looks like. White Pugs can be bred, and their coloration is always a genetic mutation. White purebred Pugs are always albino or leucistic, and there is no evidence to suggest that any reputable breeders have managed to produce white Pugs without the albino or leucistic gene. Pugs are outgoing, goofy, stubborn, and sensitive. White Pugs, who are prone to vision problems may have additional needs due to their special needs. White Pug Size Purebred Pugs are typically inches tall, and should weigh between pounds. White Pug Health Pugs are brachycephalic, meaning they have short, squashed faces. The squashed-face look is a purposeful aesthetic choice developed over decades of careful selective breeding.

They tend to be energetic and playful, and love nothing more than being around their favorite humans. Although the Chi-Poo is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable canine organizations. A Chi-Poo tends to be sweet, loving, and affectionate with their families. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They can be initially wary of strangers and strange dogs. But, as long as they have been well-socialized, they tend to warm up quickly. Chi-Poos are fantastic watchdogs because they will alert you to things, people, noises, etc. Because of this, they can be prone to barking a lot. If you start to train your dog to stop barking early on, you can keep this from becoming a nuisance behavior. Chi-Poos are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes with or without yards. These little dogs do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Due to their small size, they may also need to bundle up with some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks when the temperatures drop. Because these little dogs bond closely with their families and crave attention from them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. This also means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety. So, you will want to make sure you socialize your dog and spend some time making sure they can be comfortable when you are not around. In addition, professionally grooming and clipping are needed every weeks. If you are visiting a dog groomer regularly, they may be able to help out with some things, but you will still need to do maintenance at home between visits. Dental diseases can be prevented later in life with consistent dental care. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal. Although a Chi-Poo will be energetic when they play, they are small dogs and will tire themselves out quickly. Usually, daily walks plus some playtime are enough to keep this little dog happy and healthy. Because they thrive being around you, they may be up for more activity if you are. Just make sure you keep an eye on them to make sure they are not overexerting themselves trying to keep up and be prepared to potentially have to rest or carry them.
