I went on line looking for a puppy that would be smaller than a Golden, but with the same personality. What was I thinking? I have had a purebred Golden - the beautiful Carly that died from cancer a few years ago at 13 - and the famous Cooper the Doofus , a purebred Gordon Setter. We drove out to the breeder where the owner said her Mom hereinafter referred to as the Warden was looking after the pups. Small cages everywhere - dozens of puppies - with the poor Mom dogs locked in the cages with them. Nowhere to lie down the cages had wire bottoms which the pups kept getting their legs stuck in - yelping in pain. Dozens more full grown dogs were wandering around the main floor of the house - peeing wherever they felt like it. The Warden was non-plussed. She was much more interested in telling us her life story. Single Mom, four adult kids, all ungrateful. The oldest "kid" was her boss - the brains behind the puppy mill.
