Clean the area of IDC with a Stridex pad, be sure to wipe the top of paw and under the paw pad then apply hemorrhoid cream to top and bottom of affected area on paw. Also during baths, can add Epson Salts to the water and allow the feet to soak. Mucous: After exertion bulldogs will sometimes begin to choke on phlegm. If this happens a squirt of lemon juice will break up the thick mucous. Skin irritation: Most can be treated with twice a day application of Listerine, after dry apply Gold Bond Powder. Ears: I clean ears with a baby wipe every other day. Never stick a Q-tip deep into the canal. When wet ears is a concern after bathing, substitute peroxide with alcohol. I keep both solutions on hand and use the alcohol recipe after baths or playing in water. I use an old Dawn bottle. Wet fur slightly, then bath with this mixture. Fleas have an oil bubble surrounding them. The Dawn breaks down the oil bubble leaving the flea vulnerable. Rinse, then bathe with flea shampoo for heavy infestation. If light, you can get away with using regular dog shampoo. For dry skin: Selsun Blue or T-gel shampoo. Itchy skin: 1-cup apple cider vinegar in 1-gallon water. Itchiness from allergy or insect bite: 1 mg of Benadryl per pound. Kennel cough: Since Bullies have a difficult time breathing on a good day, Kennel Cough can be a very serious matter. Most should be placed on Antibiotics prophylactically to prevent pneumonia. I dose with whatever the dose is for a child 12 and over. Limping: If the dog injures himself, is favoring a leg and has no obvious signs of fracture…. This will keep them busy. Practice this a few times everyday until they start flipping their head at you every time you call their name. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same name too! Teach your puppy to sit Labradoodle training is often started by teaching them how to sit. We call this a marker word. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow with a tasty treat. Bits of smelly sausage or cheese will definitely do the trick. If this happens, try to keep it simple at first and just use their own kibble if they are motivated to work for it. Save the big guns in treat terms for when you really need it! How to do it Always begin training at home. The outside world is far too exciting at the moment, and your puppy will probably not focus on you. Stand in front of your pup with a treat in your hand and place the treat on their nose, then bring it up to your waist. Recall — How to teach your Labradoodle puppy to come back when called Your puppy should have a good grasp of their name by now, which should make recall training pretty straightforward. Pun intended. How to do it You will need plenty of those high value treats and your best cheery voice. Call your puppy only once! This is super important as you want them to learn that their name only has to be called once for them to react to it. How to do it Get your puppy excited by showing them their favorite toy and making it come to life by waving it around. Once they are interested in the toy, throw it a short distance away from you. Prevention of Resource Guarding This part of Labradoodle training is important — it will prevent resource guarding by teaching your puppy how to give up items willingly. Resource guarding is this thing that happens when dogs are unwilling to give up items back, or when they get protective over something from humans or other dogs. From the training tips above, preventing resource guarding always comes down to a good swapping. Resource guarding starts when we force our dogs as puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. To avoid that, resist your temptation to reach deep inside their mouths to get whatever it is they have. Ultimately, we want our puppies to be willing to give things up when we need them to. What we really mean is care, handling, health and grooming. Start by just showing them the brush and running it over them with the apartment side so they get used to the sensation minus the bristles. Hand Touch and Handling If you handle your puppy too roughly or grab at them, not only are they going to have a bit of a fright, but it could make them feel scared about being touched in the future. Use plenty of treats, and remember to stop if they walk away. Touch should be a pleasant thing not forced. Week 2 — Training your Labradoodle puppy Week 2 already! But if you leave them on their own for long periods, then they may find their entertainments, and that may be destructive. If you are out at work all day, then labradoodle are not the dogs for you. Standard Labradoodles, in particular, can be boisterous and mischievous. If you are out at work all day, then consider getting a breed that is not so emotionally dependent on humans and also survives better without much attention. Labradoodle thrive on interaction. Getting a puppy is a long-term commitment. So, before getting a labradoodle puppy, ask yourself some questions: Do I have enough time? In the first few days after leaving his mother and litter-mates, your puppy will feel very lonely and afraid. You and your family will have to spend time with him to make him feel safe. For the first few days, you will need to be around all of the time to help your puppy settle into his new home. It also enables you to bond with him. After that, you will need to spend time house-training and good behavior training. You will have to make time every day for exercise. Exercise is essential as many behavioral problems are a result of a lack of exercise. You will also have to feed your labradoodle daily, in fact, several times a day with a young puppy. Your puppy will require regular grooming. Some Labradoodles do not shed hair, but all of them need regular brushing to stop their hair from matting. How long can I leave my Labradoodle alone? There is a lot of debate among the labradoodle owners regarding this question. It is very common for them to follow you from room to room, especially at the beginning. Labradoodles are amiable dogs and often do well with another labradoodle, which is why some owners have more than one. Dogs are pack animals. Their natural state is to be with their pack. Being alone is not natural for any dog. So how long can you leave your dog alone? In the UK, a rescue organization would not let anyone adopt a dog if they intend to leave the dog alone for more than four or five hours a day. Dogs left at home alone all day become bored. In the case of Labradoodles that are highly dependent on the company for their happiness, they might become sad and depressed. If you live in a small apartment of a high rise building, then a standard labradoodle would not be the right choice. They love bounding around and are happiest when they have lots of exercise and entertainment. If your home is small, then out of three types of labradoodle, the miniature would be the most suitable. Also, if you have less time to devote to your dog, then chose a mini labradoodle as they require less exercise than a medium and standard labradoodle. Alvalley is a high quality brand for all lengths. For an adult dog, use an 8 mm or larger. For a young puppy, an 8 mm leash works fine, but I prefer the smaller 6 mm Alvalley Snap Lead one for ease of use when working at home. This size fits easily into the outside pocket of a treat bag. If going for a walk, use a more substantial leash such as the 8 mm Alvalley leash. For at-home use, a 6 mm collar is fine. I like to attach a snap lead permanently to a martingale collar for ease of use. The collar and leash can easily be slipped off and on as needed. Puppies and even some dogs like to chew the plastic ones. At 10 weeks of age, we are using very small bowls for ease of use during training. Golden Retrievers tend to act like they are starving and eat too fast, even at their correct weight. These bowls slow them down so that they will come closer to chewing their food than inhaling it. I like to use buckets instead of bowls for water. Puppies love to dig in their water which makes a mess out of it. Hang the bucket on the outside of the crate by the handle that is on the bucket. Then attach the clip for security by using only one side of the clip to attach the handle to the crate. Leave the other end of the clip just hanging. Never put water inside a crate with a dog. I recommend the 2-quart size for one or two big dogs. This size is also a good size for a puppy. I use two snaps to stabilize the bucket. Though wire crates usually have a divider so that you can size the crate down, we recommend that you go ahead and purchase a 24 inch wire crate along with the correct size for your dog when he is grown. Most puppies can use the 24 inch crates for about 2 months after they are weeks of age. It is also helpful to have a smaller crate when traveling. If you want this option with a Summer Brook puppy, you can have a small icrate shipped to our home address for you to pick up when you get here. The best size crate for adult girls is a 36X24X27 inch wire crate. For an adult boy, use either a 42X28X30 or 36X24X27 inch wire crate. We prefer wire crates in most cases because they give more ventilation and Golden Retrievers like it to be cool. I prefer the crate with the double door because you will have the opportunity to use it turned sideways with the entrance on the side as well as the end. The Icrates are also two inches shorter and two inches narrower than the Life Stages crate. They are larger at the bottom than the top so they fit better in the back of an SUV or van. They are crash tested and have excellent safety records. These crates are a bit difficult to set up and take down so we only recommend them for those that want a crate that stays in a vehicle most of the time. They are perfect for families that take their dogs with them a lot and want a somewhat permanent fixture in their vehicle. This crate is very lightweight and sets up and folds down quickly and easily. We love these crates for motels and dog shows. Wood Crate Denhaus Townhaus : I recommend this crate if looks are important to you. This crate looks just like a nice end table. Though it was expensive, mine has held up well for several years. This is a raised cot-like bed that is cool and comfortable. There is a new Kuranda Bed that we have not tried ourselves but it looks amazing. It is a raised cot like the aluminum bed that we have loved for years but it is sized to fit perfectly into a crate! We have purchased both the aluminum as well as the less-expensive PVC Kuranda beds. Our aluminum beds still look brand new but our PVC beds are starting to warp a little after a few years. We like the Ballistic Nylon fabric which has held up for us for several years. The large is the correct size for both boy and girl Goldens. We have two of them and they are as comfortable as many human beds. We have the extra-large size but a large would be plenty big enough for a girl. At first, your puppy will have to be watched almost every minute when they are out of the crate or pen in order to establish good potty habits and also to teach them not to chew. Until you teach them otherwise, some puppies will try to chew everything, including the furniture and even the woodwork on the walls so I have found the pen to be a huge help. If you get a pen, you need to begin training your puppy not to jump on the sides right away. Never pet your puppy or let him out while he is jumping. Reward him for sitting. They open and close easily and in both directions. The Richell Pens look really super nice. They also can be set up as room dividers. We own at least a dozen sets of these pens and have used them in a large number of configurations. However, like most exercise pens, many puppies will eventually learn to climb or jump out of them. Families must be on top of training their puppy not to jump on the sides. Unlike the Richell pen, most, if not all pens have doors that open in only one direction. If you get one of these pens, set your pen up so that the door opens to the outside. If you are getting your puppy from a breeder other than Summer Brook, plastic pens are a good option for a 7 to 10 week old puppy. It is easier to house train if you start off not allowing your puppy in too large of an area. It also has the added convenience of being able to be easily removed by simply pushing a button that locks it in place. However, this gate must be mounted to the wall.
