However, if you want to verify their legitimacy, read our ultimate puppy buying guide for some proven tips on how to safely find a breeder online or how to find a puppy for sale while avoiding scams. In cases like that, interested adopters are often put on a long waiting list that could take months or even years. If the AKC recognizes them then you can trust them. PuppySpot — This website helps potential dog owners find the dog of their dreams by allowing them to search for their breed of choice, then doing all the breeder vetting, health checks, and travel coordination to make the whole process that much easier. Puppy Prices and Expenses The price of a happy and healthy English Bulldog varies significantly depending on the caliber of the breeder and the pedigree of its parents. Can you tell the difference between a reputable breeder and Brillianenglishbulldogs. Nowadays, most people start their search for a English Bulldog puppy on the internet. Current Screenshot of Brillianenglishbulldogs. In the report, PetScams. Using images stolen from genuine breeders websites, they advertise on classified websites as well as Google and Yahoo search. It is not as hard as it might seem. Before you become hoodwinked by the cuteness, check out a few of these ideas. The easiest way to determine if you are working with a legitimate breeder is to find a English Bulldog breeder near your own home. If you found the English Bulldog of your choice that is not close by, insist on speaking to the breeder over Skype, Facetime or any other video conferencing software. Excellent breeders will not sell their English Bulldog puppies for rock bottom prices. It is not cheap to raise a litter. Vet bills, health testing, food and supplements, time and effort go into a litter. So, if the price seems too good, it probably is not legit. If you have been checking the price of English Bulldog puppies that you are interested in buying and a puppy comes up that is way below the going price, there is a reason for it. Read on for more information about prices. Free or nearly free shipping: Many scammers will offer shipping at a ridiculously low price with their choice of Pet Delivery Agency. Scammers entice you to purchase knowing that shipping is not going to be an added expense however, if you fall for the scam, the cost of shipping continues to grow almost daily. Scammers will normally insist on shipping the puppy to you. They will make up excuses for why you cannot pick up the puppy in person. This is because they will charge you much more for the shipping that you have paid for the puppy. If you are adamant that you will pick up the puppy in person the scammer will eventually relent and arrange an appointment to meet. Scammers do this as there is a possibility that you will relent and pay for shipping. It does not cost them anything if you insist on driving cross country to an address that has no connection with the scam. There are several stories of home owners who were unaware that their address was being used as part of a English Bulldog puppy scam 3. Whare are , located? A genuine breeders website will have a location, phone number, email and probably social media links. This is because genuine breeders want to be contacted by what ever method is convenient to you. Scammers spend time creating multiple new websites. It would take them a lot longer if they needed a new email, phone and address for each one. The simplify it by having as few methods of contact as possible 4. They prefer not to speak to you as this may arouse your suspicions. Scammers are also happy to correspond by email. Read the email carefully. The wording in the email should be proper English. If you are in the US, scan the wording and determine if it is a native speaking US citizen. Puppy scams often originate abroad. Ask questions. If it is a scammer the first replies to your questions will be well written however this a script that they are coping and pasting. If you ask continue to ask questions about the puppy the scammers answers deteriorate and become much shorter. If the response you receive seems odd, or does not conform to the local vernacular or how you would expect a native to speak or respond to your questions, chances are you are not corresponding with a local person. While not a definite sign, that should at least send up a red flag. Odd use of grammar is a telltale sign that you are not dealing with a native speaker. No Visiting Permitted There are very valid reasons why a breeder might not want to allow you full access to their kennel, but if you get the feeling that the person refuses to allow visits, there is a problem. Some breeders will allow a visit to their home but not tours of their kennel facilities. Do not immediately rule these breeders that refuse admittance to their kennels, as they may have a good reason for not allowing access to their kennels. Infectious disease is one such reason. Some breeders have been hurt by people visiting their kennels and introducing parasites or viruses. For example, if you visit one site that may have a parvo outbreak and then travel to another breeder, you can unwittingly pass on the parvovirus to the dogs in the second kennel creating a biohazard to the breeder. One such instance is likely to prompt the breeder to close off the kennel to outside pathogens. There is no excuse for a English Bulldog breeder to not have a video call with you. If you are going to spend a lot of money on a puppy they should oblige you with a video call! Now, there is nothing wrong with a testimonial, but when you cannot confirm the legitimacy of the person providing the testimonial, you should question their authenticity. You can search part of the text to see if the testimonial has been used on other scam websites. There are normally beautiful photos of small puppies all appearing to be between 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Study the photographs well. If the photos look professional then they should all share the same background as they would have been taken at the same time. If they are not professionally taken then they should all be of the same quality and appear to be from the same location. The site normally will have little actual information about the puppy other than a fake birthdate and a price. If there is information about the breed you can use Copyscape to see if the content has been stolen. No Physical Address Do you have a real physical address of the person you are sending money to? Google it to see if it exists. Do not accept a PO box for an address. Many breeders have been hurt by people who send bad checks, but if the payment requirement seems odd, such as a Walmart money order, postal money order, Western Union, Zelle or other anonymous money transfer you may want to do a bit more research. You may find many legitimate sites that accept these types of payments, but contact them before you send any money. Photos Virtually Nonexistent but Surprisingly, a video exists. A site that can only provide pictures of an 8 or 9-week-old puppy may be a scam. If they have no pictures of the puppy prior to 8 weeks old, that should send up a red flag. Most good breeders will start photographing their puppies from birth onward. Can they keep you up to date with pictures of the puppy as they grow? Many scam sites will only have one or two pictures of a puppy that is 8 or 9 weeks old. Ask to see newborn pictures. Where did the video come from? It is relatively easy to steal a video or ask a legitimate breeder to send you photos and videos. Once the scammer has both in his possession, it is simple to add them online. Ask for a new video of the puppy you are buying. Tell them that you want your name and their website written on a piece of paper in the video. The Urgency to Ship Right Away The urgency to ship your puppy right away often within 24 hours is a big red flag. They want your money. Ask them if they can ship in two weeks and see what they say? Beyond that, there is no way that someone can secure a flight that quickly. If the puppy pictures were stolen from another website, this site would find the original source. Check out the Owner of the Website at Whois Whois is a database that will allow you to look at the person who owns the site. It should provide identifiable information about the website owner, their host server, where the host is located and the and IP Address. Look for the date the website was established. If it is recent, it could mean you are dealing with puppy scams. According to Whois, Brillianenglishbulldogs. It only has a 1 year registration. This unusually short for a genuine website but is common for a scam website. Scammers often use privacy protection to hide their details but also use false information. The information used to register Brillianenglishbulldogs. Are they on any social media sites? Scammers often display links to social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Pinterest order to look legitimate however the links do not lead to a brand page. Not all good breeders are on social media, but many are on at least one form of social media, often Facebook. Ask to chat with them on their Facebook page. Do they have Skype? Some breeders use this form of communication. It is worthwhile to see what their Skype number is and contact them there. The more places you report it, the better chance you have to shut Brillianenglishbulldogs. The address will have no connection to the actual scam as they will be an innocent third party Brillianenglishbulldogs. They use stolen credit cards and invent identities to defraud people shopping for a english bulldog puppy online. In the first email, the scammer will ask all the right questions, putting you through the motions to prove your suitability: how would we care for our puppy, how would we train him, how often would he be alone? Then the fraudsters emails will get shorter and normally keep to sms messages. This is because the first email is a template where as you are now dealing with the actual scammer. The main focus now is convincing you to pay as soon as possible. The puppy will be shipped to you by the scammers perferred delivery company. There is no other option. If you insist on picking up your new english bulldog they will eventually agree. It makes no difference to them if you travel for 4 hours because they are not at the address they claim to be. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in New York? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. We are a small family breeder that breeds beautiful English Golden Retrievers. Our goal is to raise beautiful, healthy, well adjusted puppies that will bring much joy to the homes to which they go. Their health, happiness, and livelihood are our top priorities. We love our dogs and every puppy holds a special place in our hearts. The sight of an English Golden Retriever is one of awe and beauty that cannot be compared to any other breed. It is mesmerizing, to say the very least. We choose the best possible pairs for breeding. Before we breed any dogs, we ensure the health of both the male and the female dog. We want to share the love of the English Golden Retriever breed, but our top priority is the health, wellness, and safety of the parents. Each breed was created with its own set of physical characteristics, temperament, and aptitude that make it desirable to some people, but less suitable for others. Perhaps most critical is to honestly consider whether there may be any significant drawbacks that could cause distress for either the family or the dog. All prospective puppy buyers want their new puppy to have the best possible chance for a long and healthy life, and regular veterinary care is important toward achieving that goal. But in addition, the risks for many significant health issues can be greatly reduced through careful breeding practices, beginning with certain screening examinations of the parents of a litter. Each breed has its own particular hereditary problems, and English Golden Retrievers are no exception. Please do not hesitate to ask! We are always happy to help with any questions or queries you might have. Due to the high demand, we encourage all interested families to call me as I do not let anyone adopt one of my puppies unless I have spoken to you on the phone first - I only want the very best homes for my puppies. Post header Skip post header How much exercise does a French Bulldog need? French Bulldogs are one of the most popular small dog breeds and are known for their playful, adaptable, and affectionate nature, not to mention their big bat-like ears. How much exercise does an adult French Bulldog need? Around 60 minutes of daily exercise is plenty for these pooches. One way you can do this is by having multiple gentle walks daily with plenty of rest in between. PitPat will do it for you. How much exercise does a French Bulldog puppy need? Whilst they may seem like little balls of energy when it comes to walkies, they should be limited to around 5 minutes for each month of their age. So, for example, a four-month-old French Bulldog only needs 20 minutes of total walkies each day. This will help prevent overexercising them, which could cause joint and mobility issues in the long run. At this age, walkies should be spent exploring the world around them rather than a march around the block. Give them opportunities to do lots of sniffing, experience different types of places, and interact safely with new people and animals. As your French Bulldog edges closer to adolescence, the amount of exercise they need will increase. But by how much? Just download the PitPat app to get started. How much exercise does a senior French Bulldog need? As your dog gets older, the amount they need to walk will decrease. But again, by how much? Well, every dog is different, so let them set the pace. And if they look to be slowing down, it might be time to head home. Keep an eye on them, and if you notice them looking stiff, trailing behind, or struggling in any way, start reducing the length of their walks. Why not try some of these? Snuffle mats. May 5, French Bulldog puppies can be similar to babies when they are first born; they typically require much attention and care. At birth, puppies are blind and deaf and usually snuggle together to keep warm since they cannot regular their body temperature. If you have a French Bulldog or are looking to acquire one, you may be interested in what happens before taking one home. When French Bulldogs Are First Born When the puppies are born, breeders and shelters ensure they cry and breathe properly. Then a veterinarian does a complete examination to check for any abnormalities. The average birth weight of the puppies is anywhere between 10 to 18 ounces. For the first few weeks or so, Frenchie puppies sleep most of the time. Then, for just a little bit of time, they typically will nurse when they are awake and somewhat alert. Heat lamps or another external heat source are available if puppies are not in direct contact with their mother. Whoever is watching over the French Bulldog puppies usually has a busy time assisting mothers every few hours and tending to make sure the puppies are latching and growing and being stimulated to go to the bathroom. Keeping a close watch on the puppies this way is because they are so tiny. The Frenchie mom could accidentally smother one, unaware, so they need to be looked after. French Bulldogs 10 Days to Two Weeks Old When the puppies are around ten days, they still sleep very often, but finally, they start to open their eyes and do some exploring. Being around the other dogs from the litter aids in socialization. When they reach a full two weeks old, their ears open, and they can hear. They cannot walk yet; their primary method of moving is crawling, similar to an army crawl. With exploring and hearing sounds, the world is opening up more for them, so they can begin venturing into new places and spaces. They also graduate from making only small whimpers to yelps, whines, and barks. But you will find that soon enough, their legs will stop being shaky, and they will move right along and walk with ease. They may also stop nursing at this age, though some Frenchies may continue to nurse until closer to six weeks of age. After that, their teeth begin to grow out and become more active and playful. They are also only strictly handled by a few people who do proper sanitizing. The puppies can chew on dry puppy food and build out their nutrition at four weeks old and start trotting and running. They can be handled by people with clean hands and have more freedom to explore inside. French Bulldog Puppies Five Weeks to Seven Weeks Old By the time French Bulldog puppies get to five weeks old, they can start exploring outside with less supervision and have increased playtime with their siblings. Their teeth also become more prominent, and they begin to chew a lot including on fingers, so be careful — those teeth are sharp! At six weeks, they have even more energy and enjoy playtime and a little more less sleep time. They are reaching more milestones, including growth at around 5 pounds. They also get another thorough veterinarian examination where they will receive vaccinations, which they receive again around nine weeks of age. It is an exciting endeavor to get a new puppy into the house, but also crucial to remember to puppy-proof things that the dog may chew or not leave out anything that the puppy could get into that poses a danger or hazard. They do sleep a lot, but French Bulldogs have a lot of energy that they want to burn off when they are awake. Understanding growth stages and how much exercise to give your Frenchie from puppy to adult dog is helpful for longevity. French bulldogs are prone to medical issues as they age, but ensuring exercise will help reduce their chances and prevent problems from occurring too soon. Socialization — Frenchies, like most dogs, need socialization to adapt to new situations and places and be more well-adjusted. So, taking your dog for frequent walks where it can explore other people and animals is helpful. Dogs who can coexist in harmony tend to be happier and friendlier and have less tendency to suffer from depression. Behavior and Training — walking your French Bulldog helps establish boundaries so that you can train them to be more obedient and follow your lead. It allows for bonding and building a connection with your puppy, and you can reinforce good behaviors when out walking together. Stimulation — Frenchies are prone to separation anxiety if left alone indoors and without exercise. Please keep your dog mentally active and give it more attention by walking it frequently in a routine. Walks of around 20 to 30 minutes should suffice and give your pet the ability to explore, socialize, and be stimulated. Consider breaking up the time and walking your Frenchie a couple of times each day, or having one of those times centered around play, to ensure that your French Bulldog is getting all of their walkings in and using that energy. As French Bulldog puppies start discovering their abilities to move around and be alert to their surroundings, they become more in need of walking and forms of stimulation. Prepare for the weather outside when you take your puppy for walks. As your Frenchie ages, walks may be cut shorter depending on how your dog is feeling. However, be sure not to overexert if you sense it needs a break, and take them as often as necessary. Every French Bulldog needs to walk and be active for good health and a long, happy life with its owner. Share on facebook. While healthy Frenchie adult generally require 15 to 20 minutes of brisk walks every day, the case is different for French bulldog pups. Daily walks are not a necessity and are not even recommended for puppies because their bones, muscle and joints are still in development as opposed to that of the adults. In fact, waking your Frenchie puppy daily may result in complications and harm rather than making them healthier. The best way of exercising a French bulldog puppy is to give it free reins in playing as much as possible with toys suitable for his age. Socialization is another form of exercise for pups because it is an excellent way of expending that puppy energy while becoming socially acquainted with other people, pets and places and also learning new social skills. The older your Frenchie gets, the more their needs for actual physical exercise increases. If you do need to walk your Frenchie pup, the maximum amount of time for a puppy is around 2 minutes for every month of age. So, for instance, if your pup is 3 months old, the walking time will be 3 month multiplied by 2 minutes and that will of course be 6 minutes of exercise. When walking your pup, ensure you look out for signs of fatigue and exhaustion such as panting, lagging behind, etc. Although French Bulldogs are generally low energy and are happy with apartment living, they need exercise just like the rest of us. Making sure your dog gets exercise at least once a day is recommended. Whether that be a trip to the dog park or a walk around the block. One of the many bonuses to having a Frenchie is that you can do this without carving out too much time during the day. Short walks and playtime at home provide the perfect amount of exercise for them without running the risk of overworking your dog. There are a lot of different activities to meet the interests of your dog and get them moving. Frenchies are known to be smart and social, so consider providing them with physical activity that can appeal to both of these qualities. It can also be nice to take your dog to a local dog park where they can interact and socialize with other dogs. Overall, it is recommended that Frenchies walk for about minutes per day at a minimum. One easy inside activity is to use house-friendly toys to get your Frenchie moving. This could be a good old fashioned tennis ball or a toy that your Frenchie naturally gravitates to. Then, train your dog to respond to another word to come and find you. You might be more successful with this activity with a treat, but overtime they will want to find you even without the treat. As with any dog, Frenchies can be over-exercised. However, Frenchies are at particular risk because they are a brachycephalic breed with a flatter face and shorter nose that makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. The best way to determine the amount of exercise you should be providing your dog is to be particularly observant of when they tire during physical activity. Whether you just added a Frenchie puppy to your family or have had one as a companion for many years, it is important to know that Frenchies are prone to being overworked more easily. Overworking puppies and older dogs puts them at greater risk for joint problems and heat exhaustion. In addition, because older Frenchies have given so much love over their lives, their heart might not be as efficient as it once was and may render them more tired when exercising. Thankfully, Frenchies are pretty smart when it comes to this kind of thing. Whilst they can become over-excited at times, they will typically stop exercising and try to cool themselves down if they need to. You might also consider having play time in an air-conditioned place during the summer months. Always make sure to bring water and have shade readily available when you are walking your dog outside. The first signs of heat exhaustion usually consist of increased panting and foamy saliva. Although Frenchies are generally calm, puppies can be nippy especially when they are excited or around new people or dogs and environments. Although this behavior usually decreases with age, it is important to socialize your dog with other dogs, people, and environments at an early age to prevent this hyperactive behavior and allow your dog to lead an active lifestyle. Tips for walking a french bulldog To make walking fun and easy for both you and your French bulldog, here are 3 helpful tips. Use a Harness when walking For brachycephalic dog breeds like the French bulldog, it is recommended to use a harness rather than a collar when walking them. This is to prevent their restricted air passages from causing complications while you are walking them. Exercise in the early mornings and evening This is especially important during the hot climate. Again, this is because the French bulldog is a brachycephalic breed and is prone to overheating. Take your dog out for a walk in the mornings and evenings when the weather is cooler. Walk them with treats To make walking fun and also keep your dog by your side, you can consider walking them with quality treats. This should serve as a lure to keep your pup from pulling on its harness and staying by your side while walking. These include joints limber, maintains muscle mass, prevent obesity and generally keep your dog happy and healthy. So, how do you know when you are over-exercising your Frenchie? Worn-out Paw Pads Paw pad injury is common in French bulldogs when they are being over-exercised. However, it gets even worse when your dog has a blistered paw. Over-exercised pads always have tears present. Sore Muscles Pain in the muscles is another sign that your Frenchie is being overworked by you. One way of detecting muscular pains in your dog is to observe whether it struggles to pick itself up after resting from the exercise. Your dog may also avoid walking up and down the stairs because it is in so much pain. Overheating Heatstroke is a very common problem in French bulldogs because of their inability to regulate their body temperature. Behavioral Changes The most obvious signs of over-exercising which any caring dog owner should detect at once is changes in behaviors of the dog. For instance, if your Frenchie normally enjoys walking with you but suddenly starts to shy away from any form of walking, you may want to pay a visit to your vet to find out why your dog is refusing exercise. Powered by GoDaddy Website Builder. So young French Bulldogs usually have a slower walking pace. Past a certain age, dogs will gradually decrease in health and physical conditions. So a senior French Bulldog can walk less and less far as he loses stamina and speed. Old dogs are also more prone to joint problems that could restrict them from walking long distances, such as arthritis and hip or elbow dysplasia. So a senior Frenchie can probably walk between 30 and 45 minutes per day at a slower pace, which means about 3 km or 2 miles. Since older dogs are more fragile and less athletic, you should ideally divide it into two or three short walks throughout the day. French Bulldogs are prone to respiratory and mobility problems that could restrict them from walking long distances. French Bulldogs in perfect health should be able to walk for around 5 km 3 miles or even more. But some of them with special conditions might not be able to go that far. In general, the healthier a dog is, the longer he can walk. Fitness Level Some Frenchies are in better shape than others. The more stamina, endurance, and strength a dog has, the farther he can walk. Although walking is a moderate physical activity, it still requires good physical conditions. Some French Bulldogs are more energetic than others. And the more energy they have, the longer they can walk. So if your dog is active and never seems tired, he can probably walk 5 km 3 miles or more. On the other hand, a lethargic and lazy Frenchie can probably not go that far. But keep in mind that it can vary according to the time. Your French Bulldog might have more energy in the morning or less after an intense effort. Walking Speed How fast a dog walks will also influence how far he can go. A French Bulldog can generally walk for up to an hour per day. But some dogs are faster than others and will be able to go farther because of that. On the other hand, the more speed, the more energy is generally spent. So it tends to balance out at a distance of about 5 km 3 miles per day. Weather Another element to consider is the temperature and weather. And in the winter, it might just be too cold, snowy, or icy to walk. So the weather and extreme temperatures can influence how far your Frenchie can walk. Walking about 2 km 1 mile two or three times per day would be ideal. I recommend at least one walk in the morning of about 2 or 3 km 1 or 2 miles and another shorter one in the afternoon of around 1 or 2 km 1 mile. Finally, most French Bulldogs can walk around 5 km 3 miles per day. But some might be able to go more or less far depending on their health, age, fitness, and other conditions. Also, keep in mind to start slowly and gradually increase the distance. Dogs need time to develop their muscles and build stamina before walking long distances. And make sure to give your Frenchie as much water, breaks, and rest as needed. You can also run, play games, or do any other physical activity. Learn more about the exercise needs of a French Bulldog. I am now a big walker so can happily advise new owners on how much walking French Bulldogs need, the distance you can walk them, how often, how long, and also the walking requirements for puppies — which is very different to adult Frenchies. Do French Bulldogs need walking? There are many misconceptions over the Frenchie breed. In fact, I recall when we were first considering getting a French Bulldog, we were told that they were lazy , sedentary, and required very little exercise. The bottom line is that all dogs need to be walked. Claude loves his walks in the forest and on our local beaches. French Bulldogs need to be walked because… Exercise and health: Overweight French Bulldogs will suffer with breathing problems, possible diabetes, and damage to their hips and joints. Frenchies are already prone to a wide range of medical problems , but walking them often can reduce their chances of an early death related to weight gain. Natural instinct: Walking fulfils their natural instinct that harks back to their pack mentality of getting up in the morning and walking from their home to find food. Socialization: Walking lets your Frenchie socialize with other dogs, other people and adapt to unique situations so they can grow up to be well adjusted dogs. This will make them far happier and less inclined to exhibit depression. Training and behavior: Walking your Frenchie lets you train them, practice obedience skills, and reinforce your own relationship with him. I hope that convinces you; all Frenchies need to be walked. But exactly how often and how far should their walk lengths be? How much walking do French Bulldogs need? Adult: 30 to 45 minutes. Older Frenchies: Dependent on health. Please Note: The above walking times do not mean my Frenchie is walking constantly for these minutes. This is just the amount of time we are out of the house so will include walking, stopping, playing, pooping, and sniffing around. He will not be constantly on the move. The times above are based on my own experience of owning this breed, and how much time Claude would need walking before he became an adult. Your Frenchie might be different and may not be able cope with this amount of long walking time — alternatively he might demand more. Be careful though; Frenchies are a brachycephalic breed so you should avoid walking them in hot weather or letting them run continuously for more than 5 minutes; they can quickly overheat and have breathing difficulties. Be careful walking your Frenchie in the sun as they can quickly overheat. However, how often you walk your French Bulldog will boil down a number of factors; Age: The older they get, the less they will need or be able to walk. Health: Frenchies are prone to health problems, some of which limit walking. Character: All dogs are different, and some could be less active than others. Again, this is all down to my own personal experiences of walking our own Frenchie… How far should you walk a French Bulldog? An adult French Bulldog walk length can be as far as 3 miles. I walk my own Frenchie this far and this long many mornings through our local forest providing its not too hot. He then demands a further afternoon walk of around 1. At the very least, our Frenchie is getting 3 miles a day in walks. Can French Bulldogs go for long walks? This depends on how you define a long walk. However, how long can you walk a French Bulldog should be treated with caution. Can you walk a French Bulldog too much? Yes, you can walk a French Bulldog too much, and it can be dangerous. I have got personal experience of why this is so important due to an incident when Claude was younger. My family I went for a walk in our local forest when the sun was behind clouds. As we turned back to walk the 1. It was cloudy at first but then the sun came out and Claude got very overheated on his walk. Within 10 minutes Claude was totally exhausted due to the heat. I had to leave him with my wife and run back to the car, and then drive back to get them. Never will we make this mistake again, it actually very scary. Handy Hint: Read my guide on how to tell if your Frenchie is overweight with tips on how to help them with a weight loss diet. The morale of the story is you need to keep an eye on the weather. Frenchies can easily overheat, and when they do, you need to take steps to cool them down. Signs of over-exertion Here are the signs that you have over-exerted your Frenchie with too much walking, either distance and time related, or to do with the heat: Heavy, continuous panting. Exercise and health: Overweight French Bulldogs will experience breathing difficulties, diabetes, and hip and joint damage. French bulldogs are already prone to a number of medical issues, but walking them on a regular basis can help to reduce their risk of dying prematurely due to weight gain. Mental stimulation: Indoor dogs who do not get the exercise they require will become mentally unstable. Natural instinct: Walking your dog allows them to release built-up energy, which will keep your Frenchie active and allow them to run around as they would in the wild. Socialization: Walking develops a healthy sociability in your Frenchie, allowing them to socialize with other dogs, people, and adapt to different circumstances so that they may grow into well-adjusted pets. This will make your puppy or adult dog much more content and less prone to depression. Training and behavior: Walking your Frenchie allows you to train them, practice obedience skills, and reaffirm your own connection with them. Dogs who are walked on a regular basis are generally better behaved all round. Overexerting your Frenchie can cause a number of health problems that you will want to avoid. French Bulldogs are prone to several different medical issues, and their respiratory system is not made for extended periods of running and strenuous activity. Take your French bulldog for a walk using a harness rather than a collar. A harness, on the other hand, provides excellent support for the dog — and if they begin running and pulling on the leash, it is less stressful. Morning and evening walks are ideal for this breed. Because of their tiny noses and restricted airways, French Bulldogs have a hard time breathing when they exercise. Overdoing any sort of activity that raises the need for oxygen is not a good idea. Frenchies have a harder time keeping their body temperature steady, so you should always walk them during the cooler hours of the day which can be 5am in the summer and 11pm at night. In heat and humidity, avoid taking your French bulldog for a walk. Heat exhaustion may be recognized by increased panting and foamy saliva, which are the first indicators. Always bring water and find shade when walking your dog outdoors if you do go out during the day. During the summer months, you might want to play in an air-conditioned location instead. Before meals is the ideal time to exercise your French bulldog. When their stomach is full, French bulldogs tend to become drowsy and wish to simply lie around. Whilst they may seem like little balls of energy when it comes to walkies they should be limited to around 3 minutes for each month of their age. Snuffle mats, Kongs, Food puzzles, Lickimats and Interactive toys are great choices to keep your Frenchie occupied. How can I monitor my French Bulldogs activity level? How much exercise should Frenchies get? Do French Bulldogs Need Exercise? What is the best way to walk Frenchies? You can walk with your adult French Bulldog every day. In fact, even an elderly French Bulldog can be taken out for a walk every day but at a slower pace and at a shorter distance. What about sick French Bulldogs? Because in some cases, even a short walk can exacerbate their medical conditions. Every Frenchie is unique and each have its own needs in terms of how much they need to be exercised. Typically, it is recommended that they be taken for 2 to 3 several short walks throughout the day so as not to overexert them. Whether you walk your Frenchie with a harness or a French Bulldog leash, there are several factors to consider on how often you should walk your pooch. Age French Bulldog puppies and seniors have different exercise needs compared to regular adult Frenchie due to their limitations and health condition. Fitness Level The stamina and endurance vary from each individual Frenchie and some can have a faster walking pace than others. Health Each French Bulldog have their own health issues that can limit how often they can be walked. Energy Level Some Frenchies are lively and active, while some may be more lethargic or lazy. Weather Condition Frenchies have short muzzles, which make it difficult for them to adequately cool or warm their bodies, making them vulnerable to extreme heat and cold. You can have a fun walk with your puppy every day. Yes, French Bulldogs are inquisitive dogs that love to explore the outdoors. French Bulldog puppy walking outside of your home can begin 10 days after her final set of core vaccinations. That should be around 4 months of age or thereabouts. Below is an example of how long and fast can a French Bulldog walk by age: 4 month old: 0. When my Frenchie was still a 4-month-old puppy, I walked her around the neighborhood for a period of 12 minutes but I divided it into 2 walking sessions. I recommend that you do the same because walking is also the best time to train your puppy how to be comfortable wearing a harness. As she developed her stamina, I gradually increased the time to an additional 3 minutes per month. An adult French Bulldog ideally needs 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily. The amount of walking time they need really depends on how much exercise they are already getting from other activities. To prevent overexertion, I would often take my Frenchie for 2 walks every day — once in the morning before breakfast and another one in the late afternoon. Both times are ideal for walking for the outside temperature is not too high, especially during the summer. Select the appropriate French Bulldog Leash. The Frenchies can benefit from a soft leash because this does not strain their necks and reduces pressure on their tracheas. Use a harness and not a neck collar because it reduces injuries caused by pulling. Keep the walking session short to avoid overexertion. French Bulldogs are sensitive to extreme temperatures. The best time to walk them is at the break of dawn or late afternoon. Take water breaks in between. Stick to a routine to bring down anxiety levels. Give nice treats after your walk. How far a French Bulldog can walk really depends on their overall health and ability. Some can only tolerate short distances while others can go for more than 3 miles per day. The main goal in taking your Frenchie for a walk is to improve his physical and mental health. But also to provide exposure to the world around him with an awareness of his limitations. Find out how we get chocolate, black or yellow puppies and what color pups we might get when we mix Labradors of different colors. Strictly speaking, there are only three different types of Labrador color: black Labs, brown Labs usually referred to as chocolate and yellow Labs. These are the three colors recognized and accepted by the Kennel Club In practice, there is a wide range of shades of yellow Labrador color, from palest cream to richest fox red. But what makes a Labrador brown, or black, or yellow. And what about Silver Labradors? Where does this new and controversial coat color come in to play? Where do Black and Chocolate Labradors come from? The information that determines whether or not your Labrador is basically black or basically chocolate is passed on through a pair of genes. Why black is a dominant color: It is normal for dominant genes to switch off, or over-ride, recessive genes. And that is exactly what happens here. A dog with BB genes will be black, because he has no little b gene, the one that gives us a brown coat. But a Bb dog will be black too, because if the dominant black gene is present, it switches off the brown gene. How chocolate Labradors are made: Even though a dog inherits a little b gene, the dog will only appear brown if no black gene B is present at all. Two black genes BB gives you a black Labrador One of each Bb also give you a black Labrador Two brown genes bb gives you a chocolate Labrador Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog at the bottom will actually look brown. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. Remember, the dog in the middle of our list above will look black, but pass the brown gene on to about half of all its offspring. But things are never that simple are they? Because of course some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. And these genes have a different kind of power. The result is a yellow dog But little ee is recessive, and if the dominant E gene is present, it switches off the masking gene. It only takes one big E gene to do this. So the dog will only appear yellow if no big E gene is present at all. There are three possible combinations of eee gene that a dog could inherit. There are nine different possible combinations. Nine different possible Labrador genotypes! The chart below lists them genotype is the genetic makeup, phenotype is the appearance of the dog. English Cream Labrador retrievers 7 little puppies, all sleeping in a row There are 4 females and 3 males in this litter, and so far they are all doing extremely well! Fun additional info: Polar Bear Labradors are just the palest shade of yellow, which is why some nearly all white labs will have patches of darker yellow on their coats. It is just a fun, unique and rare shade of yellow — and we think the contrast against the dark nose and eye tissue is just stunning. Albinism is extremely rare in dogs, affecting maybe one in every 20,

best puppy food for english bulldogs - A puppy may experience 20 sleep cycles nightly. Humans typically go through about four or five cycles. These are the phases. Non-rapid eye movement NREM. This phase often lasts about 10 minutes. Rapid eye movement REM. Breathing increases during this phase of deep sleep, especially if your pup is dreaming yes, dogs dream. Recommended Videos Your dog will run through these cycles. There may be other reasons, too. How can I find out how fast my pet is breathing? However, vets say some dogs have lower thresholds. Count the breaths. Repeat for 30 seconds. Multiply the number of breaths by 2. Should I call a vet? Several factors can trigger fast breathing during sleep. Exertion Best-case scenario: Your pup is still cooling down from a rousing play session or exercise. If you took your puppy out for a game of fetch or went on a power walk together, they may still be breathing heavily as they nap it off. Heatstroke is dangerous for dogs, just like for humans. Turn down the heat or move your puppy to a cooler space, preferably inside, on a hot day. Make sure they have plenty of water. Food poisoning If your puppy got into something they should not have, like garlic or onions , they might breathe heavily. If it collapses or has too much pressure, your puppy may start breathing more heavily. Other symptoms of this issue include a dry cough. This problem typically occurs in older dogs, but puppies can have issues too. Certain breeds, like chihuahuas, are more susceptible to tracheal collapses. Heart issues Heavy breathing can be a sign of heart disease. If your dog is diagnosed with ticker trouble, the vet may have you monitor their resting breathing rate more often. Simply count each breath, which is considered one inhale and exhale, for 30 or 60 seconds. If counting for 30 seconds, multiply the number of breaths by 2. Generally, anything over 30 to 35 breaths per minute is cause for concern. Puppies may breathe rapidly when sleeping if they have recently played or exercised or are too hot. Fast breathing during rest periods can also be a sign of something more serious, such as food poisoning or heart disease. Make sure to keep your dog out of the heat and ensure they always have plenty of water. Call your vet if you notice fast breathing while sleeping. They can advise you on the next steps and evaluate your pup to determine if treatment is necessary. Editors' Recommendations. September 03, 5 min read Table of Contents Is there anything quite as peaceful as watching your pup napping? While it can be difficult to pinpoint the reason for their rapid breathing without asking your veterinarian, there are a few potential reasons you can keep an eye on. Why is my dog breathing so fast? While a quick rate of breath can be worrying it should not be a reason for instant panic. For one thing, puppies breath much faster in their sleep than adult dogs do. Interestingly enough, puppies will dream much more often and more vividly than an adult dog might. Dogs, like humans, dream during the REM phase of their sleep cycle. The REM phase is unique to mammals, like your precious pupper, and comes with a high amount of brain activity. During this period, a dog will need more energy. Adult dogs, however, do not tend to breathe as rapidly in their sleep. While a brief period of quick breathing is acceptable, prolonged periods are a bad sign. Consult with your veterinarian if you notice this kind of behavior in an adult dog. There are other factors to consider as well. Remember, a warm environment can also cause rapid breathing in your pup as it tries to cool its body down during a snooze. Keeping an eye on your thermostat will help your dog stay more comfortable! A brief nap after a spirited round of fetch or a walk through the park will leave your furry friend breathing a little harder for a bit. While these are perfectly natural reasons for rapid breathing, there are other factors to worry about. If your dog has spent an excessive amount of time in the heat they might be at risk for heatstroke. Note that this will often be combined with diarrhea, vomiting, and excess salivation. Regular checkups with your vet will help you monitor this. Fluid in the Lungs: While most mammals, great and small, have a minuscule amount of fluid in their lungs, an excess amount can cause pain and make it hard to breathe. Low body temperature can also be an indicator. How fast is normal? According to the Animal Emergency Center , a puppy will breathe at a higher rate and clock in at between 15 to 40 breaths per minute. An adult dog, however, will have a lower rate between 10 to 30 breaths per minute. To see if your pupper is breathing rapidly, time it, and see how many they take in 60 seconds. This will help you determine if you should be worried. What do I do if my dog is breathing fast while resting? If your pup is breathing fast while napping, it might be a good idea to check other factors. For instance, stomach issues combined with rapid breathing can indicate poisoning while discoloration of the gums or unusual body temperature can indicate problems like heart failure or fluid in the lungs. Waking your dog can be an acceptable way to check whether or not they were dreaming, but waking them out of REM sleep can be just as disorienting for them as it would be for you! If you choose this course of action, try to calmly call their name and reassure them that everything is okay. When should I be worried? Other signs would include diarrhea and vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy, and coughing. If your companion is low on energy, having stomach issues, or any sort of issue breathing, please consult your veterinarian to determine the cause and explore treatment options. How can I prevent this in the future? Remember, your puppy is frolicking in dreamland during their REM cycle and developing their respiratory systems. Their diet is also very important! What can help my dog sleep? Making sure your dog is comfortable and happy can go a long way toward helping them breathe easy! Providing your pup with a comfortable place to sleep can also make their dreams sweeter, and an orthopedic dog bed is a nice way to make sure they can rest easy. Remember, maintain their diet and provide a comfortable environment for them to rest in! These things, alongside regular veterinary checkups, will help you keep your pupper happy and healthy. For More Articles Check Out. A normal resting respiratory rate for a puppy can be anywhere between 15 to 40 breaths per minute, while an adult dog will breathe anywhere between 10 to 30 breaths per minute. For example, a brachycephalic dog may breathe differently than those with longer snouts, or a high-energy working breed may breathe quicker than a low-energy breed. Your puppy might also experience rapid breathing also known as tachypnea if they are scared or nervous, such as in a new environment, meeting new dogs, or if they are going on a car ride — these are times of heightened awareness and anticipation. Some puppies may also have irregular breathing or faster breathing when they are sleeping and dreaming. This is also normal and nothing to worry about. For instance, during the REM rapid eye movement stage of sleep, brain waves are faster and more irregular. Is your dog experiencing a loss of appetite? Is your dog open-mouth breathing with nostrils extended? It is active and a big dog Golden Retrievers are usually big dogs and they can be very active. If your Golden Retriever is big and it tends to be very active it could be that it breathes fast because its body requires more oxygen naturally. This would be more likely if it has always breathed fast and if the vet has never found any issues. To cool down By panting, dogs are able to circulate air through the bodies which helps them to cool down source. The reason why your Golden Retriever has been breathing fast could be that it is trying to cool itself down. Not enough exercise Golden Retrievers are a breed that is meant to get a lot of exercise on a daily basis. When they do not get enough exercise it can cause them to develop health issues and it might be why yours is breathing fast. Generally, it is recommended that they get at least an hour of exercise per day when they are healthy adults. If your Golden Retriever is not getting that much and the vet has confirmed that it is not ill or injured then it would help to make sure that it gets frequent exercise. Illness or injury It might be the case that an illness, medical condition or injury has been causing it to breathe faster. This would be more likely if it has started doing it suddenly and if it has been showing other signs of being ill or injured such as being fatigued, vomiting or limping. If it does seem like it might be ill or injured it would help to take it to a vet. It has been active recently If your Golden Retriever tends to breathe faster after doing exercise it would be likely to be because it is doing it in order to cool down. Heatstroke If the weather has become hotter and your Golden Retriever has been out in the sun for a while and it has started panting a lot then it could be because it has heatstroke. It would also be more likely if it is drooling more, its heart rate is very high, it has diarrhea and seizures. If it does then make sure to let it into a cool and shaded area, to give it water and to follow the advice in this article then to take it to a vet. This would be more likely if it starts panting more when it is hot inside. In this case, it would help to make sure to give it access to shaded areas, a cool room and lots of water. Medication If your Golden Retriever has started breathing faster after being put on medication it could be a side effect of the medication source. This would be more likely if heavy breathing is listed as a side effect on the medication. However, it would help to make sure it is ok with your vet. Allergic reaction The cause could be that it has had an allergic reaction to something. If it has been showing signs of having an allergic reaction then it would help to take it to a vet. Things to consider Below are some things to consider about your Golden Retriever breathing fast. When it started doing it If your Golden Retriever has always panted fast it would be more likely to be natural especially if the vet has not found any issues on previous visits and it is a particularly large Golden Retriever. However, it would still help to ask if the panting is normal on your next visit. If it has started breathing fast recently it would help to consider what else changed when it started doing it since it could be that there was an event that caused it to start doing it. If it did start breathing fast suddenly it would be more likely to be due to things such as heatstroke, an allergic reaction, a change in its diet, being hot, being more active, illness or injury. In this case, it would likely be the best option to take it to a vet. How to get your Golden Retriever to stop breathing fast Below are some options you have when getting your Golden Retriever to stop breathing fast. If it has always breathed fast it would also help to consult with your vet when you see them next on its breathing to double-check that it is normal behavior. Keep it cool If the weather has become hotter recently, it would help to make sure that your Golden Retriever is able to stay cool. You can do this by exercising it in the morning or evening when it is not as hot, giving it access to shaded areas and a cool room. Give it exercise As mentioned above, it is important to make sure that your Golden Retriever is able to get lots of exercise on a daily basis. Side Effects of Medication Watching their beloved pup sleeping is one of the sweetest things in the world for many owners. Our pups are gorgeous, but when they sleep, especially in a funny position, we just can not resist them. Looking after our paw friends during sleep is not only quite normal, but it can also be very helpful, as we can recognize any breathing issues that may be present. However, the normal breathing rate for each pup is individual, that is why you may want to consult a veterinarian for accurate information about your paw friend. After 30 seconds you can just multiply the number by two, to determine the breathing rate of your paw friend. Why Do Pups Breathe Fast As mentioned above pups have higher breathing rates than adult dogs, which applies even more to hyper pups, who are eager to play and explore. In general, we could say that there are three types of reasons for faster breathing in pups: 1. Physical-related causes they are quite normal, and you should not worry ; 2. Psychological causes; 3. Underlying medical issues. Psychological causes might be related to stress triggers, that may cause anxiety and lead to increased breathing rate. The third group includes underlying health conditions like heart failure, respiratory problems, Cushing's disease a. In this case you need to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. It is important that the area is not draughty as, as your puppy may get sick. You should always keep in mind that heatstroke is dangerous not only for humans, but also for dogs. During this stage the eyes move fast behind closed eyelids , the heart rate increases and the breathing gets irregular. However, from a medical point of view, there is nothing to worry about. Stress triggers can usually be a rapid environmental change, i. Your Pup Is Breathing Fast During Sleep - When Should You Consult a Veterinarian If you notice that your paw friend is breathing rapidly even when they are resting, or they are panting with a closed or not fully opened mouth, you should contact a veterinarian. Coughing, retching, wheezing as well as producing other sounds , having blue or pale gums, are other signs of underlying health conditions, that require a veterinarian check. This condition can cause permanent lung damage. Coughing occurs as a response of the body in order to help the airways clear the excess mucus. Bronchitis can be acute and chronic. While acute bronchitis is usually caused by infection viral or bacterial and is a temporary condition, if its symptoms remain more than 2 months, it is deemed chronic. Trachea Problems The trachea is a part of the airway system, supported by cartilaginous rings that open to let air in and out. This is a progressive disease, most common in toy breeds like the Pug, the Yorkshire Terrier , the Miniature and the Toy Poodle, the Chihuahua. Tracheal collapse is perceived as an extension of chronic bronchitis. The treatment of trachea problems may feature both medication and preventative care. Dyspnea Dyspnea or the so-called shortness of breath is a condition that prevents the lungs from expanding. As a result, they can not get enough oxygen into the bloodstream which leads to breathing problems. Initial treatment may feature: providing oxygen, taking out fluid from the chest cavity, doing tracheal intubation, inhalation, keeping the pup hydrated, treating any bacterial infections if present. Heart Problems Fast breathing can be a sign of congestive heart failure. Accompanying symptoms can be panting, experiencing fatigue, having difficulties breathing or breathing very rapidly, coughing, and having blue gums. Medication to correct the heartbeat or prevent fluids from build-up may be prescribed. Also, surgery may be administered. Certain types of food such as chocolate, garlic, onion, chives, macadamia nuts, avocado, xylitol, corn on the cob can be harmful for your paw friend. We always recommend that you keep human food which is potentially dangerous for your dog locked and always supervise your paw friend while outdoor. Side Effects of Medication Sedatives and pain relievers can lead to breathing problems in your paw friend. In most cases these medications do not lead to labored breathing when used properly , however, if your dog has an allergic reaction, heart issues, anemia or internal bleeding, breathing problems may occur. You might also be interested in: Normal Breathing in dogs We hope that you all remember from biology class that breathing in brings oxygen into our lungs, swapping it with carbon dioxide to be expelled. The oxygen goes round the body to our cells, providing them with energy to function, producing more CO2 as a waste product. Without this critical action, we pretty much cease to function… we die! Our bodies are pretty good at knowing what they want. When our bodies are metabolising producing energy fast, such as during exercise, we use up oxygen and produce more carbon dioxide. Increased carbon dioxide leads to a drop in the pH of the blood — it becomes more acidic. So if the chemoreceptors detect low blood pH and O2, and high CO2, they tell the lungs and associated muscles to work faster tachypnoea or breathing fast. This brings oxygen into and CO2 out of our bodies more quickly, restoring balance. Once the levels are normal, the receptors tell the lungs to slow down again. So why is your puppy breathing fast? Probably because its chemoreceptors have detected low O2 and blood pH, and high CO2, and are compensating. Question answered! You probably want a bit more information than that. Normal Causes There are plenty of normal reasons why your puppy might be breathing fast. As mentioned above, the most likely reason is exercise. If a puppy has been running around all afternoon, its body will have a huge demand for oxygen to supply the hard-working cells, and a lot of CO2 to remove. Breathing fast will help correct this quickly. Stress, excitement or fear are all linked to the stress hormone cortisol. Also known as the fight-or-flight hormone, when it activates it increases the heart rate. As the heart is a muscle, it needs oxygen to function. A faster heart leads to tachypnoea as the lungs compensate to bring more O2 to the heart. Has your puppy just had a fright or gotten excited? This might be the cause of the fast breathing rate. Cortisol is also responsible for an increased breathing rate due to pain. If your puppy sadly hurts themself, they may breathe faster. Finally, the lungs have a secondary function of helping to cool the body down by expelling warm air and inhaling cooler air. As dogs only sweat through their feet and noses, the lungs are particularly important in regulating heat. Heat is produced secondarily to exercise or just because of the environment — if your puppy is too hot, it will pant fast to lose some of that heat. Be especially wary of exercising puppies on hot days, as the two heat sources can overwhelm their compensation mechanisms and lead to heatstroke — heatstroke can be fatal , especially in puppies, so always help them cool down if they are panting too hard. A fever due to illness can cause rapid breathing for the same reason. Heart Diseases The heart is closely linked to the lungs. It pumps blood to the lungs, allowing oxygen and carbon dioxide to be exchanged. Most heart diseases in puppies are present from birth — developing heart disease at such a young age is rare. The developing heart undergoes a lot of changes before a puppy is born. These cause the blood to flow in the wrong direction, or the heart to have to work harder against pressure. The result is excessive strain on the heart. We can sometimes hear these defects with a stethoscope as a heart murmur. Only the most serious heart defects cause disease and tachypnoea as a puppy — many will either cause no effects or result in disease later in life. Puppies with heart disease may have soft coughs and be very lethargic. To compensate, the lungs speed up — lung disease often results in very fast but shallow breathing. There are many kinds of lung disease. In puppies, the most common are probably infectious lung diseases. These include kennel cough , bronchopneumonia, viral infections like influenza, and lungworm. These diseases damage the lungs, fill them with infection and reduce the area available for oxygen and carbon dioxide to be exchanged. Secondary infections after inhaling objects such as grass seeds or just a simple blockage are also a common cause of tachypnoea. Generally, puppies with lung infections also have a fever, a cough and are quite poorly, so please speak to your vet if you suspect a lung infection. Sometimes newborn puppies can be born breathing very rapidly as a result of their lungs not functioning properly. When animals are born, the lungs are often immature and full of fluid — they usually clear within a few hours of life but they can sometimes take longer, especially if the puppy was born premature. In these cases, the puppy will often be breathing quite fast. Newborn puppies are very vulnerable, so a puppy like this will need a lot of veterinary care. Finally, the lungs can also be physically damaged, reducing their capacity and resulting in compensatory tachypnoea. Examples include bruising or puncture after an accident, or damage to the ribs or diaphragm that control lung movement. These events are obviously an emergency as there could be other issues going on like internal bleeding. However, not all tachypnoea is directly linked to the heart or lungs. These puppies are often dehydrated, e. Hypovolaemia can also occur due to bleeding. Finally, the red blood cells themselves the cells that carry oxygen can be low anaemia or damaged. There are many causes of red blood cell dysfunction, including chronic disease, parasites, autoimmune diseases, carbon monoxide or onion poisoning. Puppies with these issues are often pale, cold and have blue gums. All of the above are emergencies that need to be seen by a vet ASAP. The abdomen is close to the lungs and the abdominal organs even push up on the diaphragm when animals breathe out to help expel air. But if the organs get too big they can start to compress the lungs too much, they reduce its capacity for oxygen movement and causing tachypnoea. One of the most common reasons for a swollen belly in puppies is worms — puppies should be treated for worms regularly to prevent this. Swollen tummies can also occur due to blockages from swallowed objects or stools, twisted intestines or fluid in the abdomen. There is also a rare congenital disease that allows abdominal organs to enter the thorax where the lungs are, pushing on them — we can correct this with surgery. A puppy with a big swollen belly should always be investigated for these diseases. Finally, remember that control of the breathing rate is related to specific parts of the brain. Brain damage can sometimes result in tachypnoea, as well as other serious neurological issues. There is usually an underlying cause, and in puppies is probably due to an accident. If your puppy has bumped their head, please speak to a vet quickly, especially if they are breathing fast, are collapsed or bleeding, or are an abnormal colour. You should only consider talking to a vet if the puppy is breathing fast for prolonged periods of time, or there are other signs of disease. You might also be interested in:.
