If not, they can grow to be stubborn. You can start training your puppy as soon as you take it home at 8 weeks old. Boxadors are easy to train because of their Labrador and Boxer parentage. Remember to always use positive reinforcement to make good behavior stick! Boxadors are no couch potatoes. A Boxer Lab mix needs regular physical activity since one of its parents the Labrador has a gene mutation that leads to obesity. Some owners walk their Boxadors thrice a day, but a 30 to minute walk twice a day is good enough. Keep them happy by providing them plenty of space to run around and play with you or on their own. This crossbreed can get depressed if you leave it alone for long periods and it will make sure everyone knows about its frustration by whining or howling. They want to make you happy. Boxadors are a playful bunch and would do anything to please their humans. TLC goes a long way! Think you can manage its high energy level and training needs? This hybrid has a fairly manageable coat, but this Boxer Lab mix is not hypoallergenic, as it sheds a moderate amount of fur. The fur usually comes off during spring and autumn, so, during these seasons, you have to brush their coat every day. Even after the shedding season, maintain that glossy hair by brushing it once a week. Brushing their pearly whites once or twice a week. Cleaning their ears two times a month. Checking the fur under their eyes at least twice a week. Trimming those pretty nails twice a month or when needed. The proper diet Just like Labradors, the Boxador loves to eat! Control their feeding by giving them two meals, one in the morning and one in the evening. Boxadors can be fed with around 4 to 5 cups of dry kibble per day. You can also include some tasty snacks and treats. You can reduce the risk of bloat by using slow-feeder bowls and avoiding giving your pup large meals. Lab Boxer Mix health issues Even if health issues can be passed on to Boxadors by their parent breeds, keep in mind that the chances of your hybrid getting these illnesses are quite low. The Lab Boxer mix has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, after all. These are some of the health issues the Boxer Lab mix may be prone to: Hypothyroidism. If your dog has this problem, its heart must work harder to pump blood. This is a hereditary problem common in the Boxer parent. Boxers with this health issue should not be bred from. Cardiomyopathy Dilated cardiomyopathy is another heart condition that is common in large breed dogs, like the Boxer and Labrador. In this health issue, heart muscle degeneration leads to a larger-than-normal heart. This can lead to overall heart failure. Some studies have recently been investigating a link between this issue and diet, but more research is needed to determine whether there is a causal link. Health testing is available for this problem. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is another health problem known to affect many large breeds. Hip or elbow dysplasia can be extremely painful for affected dogs. Make sure your breeder only breeds from dogs with good hip scores. Bloat Canine bloat is also known as gastric dilatation volvulus. Bloat can be fatal, so you must act quickly if your dog shows any symptoms associated. Brachycephaly Brachycephalic dogs are those with flat faces. The Boxer parent is affected by this conformation issue. Boxador puppies may inherit this shorter snout. This can lead to breathing and temperature regulation problems, as well as poor dental health and eye issues. When picking your puppy, make sure that they have a full muzzle and that the Boxer parent has a prominent nose. Symptoms can include hair loss, flaky skin, weight gain, sluggishness, seizures, and more. Dogs with this issue may have to take medication regularly for the rest of their life. In some dogs, eventually their front legs will also be affected. Exercise Induced Collapse This problem is exactly as it sounds. Affected dogs will collapse after short bursts of extreme exercise. Symptoms can include wobbliness or poor coordination. In worst cases, this problem can be fatal. General Health of Cross Breeds Not only do purebred dogs like Labs and Boxers have some serious potential health issues to contend with, some of these issues are the same. Mixed breed dogs will still be vulnerable to these issues if their parents have them. So, choose reputable breeders that health test parent dogs before breeding for the best chance at a healthy puppy. General Care Boxadors should be fed with a high quality dog food designed for large breeds. They need regular exercise and plenty of social interaction and play to stay happy and healthy. Check their nails and ears when grooming them. Dental health is a particular issue for Boxador dogs, especially those with shorter muzzles. So, keep a keen eye on their teeth. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down.
