The remaining animals seized by sheriff's deputies from a property in Tonopah in mid-November will be ready for adoption within the next month, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced Monday. Deputies took animals, including pugs, six French bulldogs and one cat, from a suspected puppy mill west of Phoenix, near th Avenue and Van Buren Street. Arpaio said the animals had been living without food or water and in their own feces. The animals were taken off the property and transferred to the Sheriff's Office's "MASH unit," a no-kill shelter in the Fourth Avenue Jail where inmates care for abused and neglected animals. The animals are being taken care of until a veterinarian determines they're fit for adoption, Arpaio said. On Monday, Arpaio said during a press conference outside First Avenue Jail that the department has been flooded with calls to adopt the pugs. Some of the animals have already found homes, but around puppies remained in the MASH unit. Those animals are suffering from a multitude of illnesses, including tick fever, arthritis, blindness and worms.
