OH MY!!! GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! Dogs never lose their ability to learn. In many cases, the older dogs learn more quickly than the ones still in the puppy stages because they are better able to focus. Where Should I Buy a Puppy? The places you can purchase a puppy from are many, but you would be wise to get a puppy from a responsible breeder. Contact a local Golden Retriever Club in your area and ask for recommendations. Another source is the Golden Retriever Club of America. There is not a responsible breeder that would ever consider selling puppies to a pet store. The advertisements in the papers are placed there by puppy mills and backyard breeders. The puppy mill breeder should be avoided at all costs. The backyard breeders are probably your best bet if you are not going to go to a responsible breeder. If the seller refuses you any of this information, walk away. A puppy should never be separated from the litter until it is at least 8 weeks of age. Responsible breeders never have more than one litter a year from a female. They do not breed a female until it is at least 2 years of age. They know the lineage of their dogs for many generations. They never breed dogs that have any medical issues that could be passed on to the puppies. They have the puppies extensively checked over by their veterinarian and provide general health certifications. They provide a healthy, rich environment for the puppies until they go to their new homes. They will always take one of their dogs back if it needs to be surrendered by the owner. They screen the new owners and the puppies for a temperament match. In spite of the price they charge, they are not in it for the money. Prince spent 8 weeks at an intensive board and train program where he learned general obedience, impulse control, leash manners and has learned engagement with people. He is crate and potty trained as well. He benefits from learning skills like these and needs a caregiver who will continually challenge him. Using treats, he can learn new skills quickly and he's very eager to please. Prince is a big manly-man of a dog on the outside however on the inside he's a soft, sensitive cuddly marshmallow. He loves being outside and exploring the world and really looks to his person for guidance. He has a very big spirit and reminds us how wonderful and exciting life can be and to value every minute! Ideal home? As mentioned, he is not a low energy dog who will be content with playing in the back yard. Low energy people need not apply. This boy wants to go out, hike, walk, run, and engage in outdoor activities. A home who would be open to introducing Prince to some fun canine sports would be great but not necessary. Someone with knowledge of canine sports would be awesome! Prince's ideal home would be one that promotes a "zen" environment between all the fun outdoor stuff. A home where he could be the star and not have to share with other animals would be the best. Considering Prince for adoption? Dilbert is a very distinguished gentleman. He is a calm and gentle soul. He is crate trained and potty trained. Dilbert loves chilling with his people. He prefers people to dogs, but may be able to exist with another dog. Dilbert is currently in home with other dogs, but is crate rotated and not reactive to the other dogs. He is easy to walk and great on leash with no reactivity. Dilbert enjoys car rides and is the best co-pilot! We are testing him with other dogs but currently would love if he could be the only dog in the household to live out his golden years showered with attention. Dilbert may have a cruciate ligament issue but at his age we treat the symptoms to keep him comfortable. He is still very active at this point in his life. It does not impact him at all on the day to day. They only time you might notice it is after sleeping or sitting for long periods, he may slightly limp until he walks it out.
