If they ever get lost, a microchip can help them be reunited with you more quickly. It's a small investment that can provide big peace of mind. Diet of a Shih-Poo Shih-Poos thrive on a well-balanced diet. As small dogs, they require foods that are rich in nutrients and appropriately portioned. Always consult with your vet for dietary advice tailored to your pet's unique needs. Ethical breeders only use health and DNA tested parents in their breeding programs. By health screening the parents for a wide variety of hereditary illnesses and conditions, breeders can confidently produce healthy litters from strong bloodlines. Of course, all of this costs a lot of money. Additionally, these breeders send their puppies home with genetic health guarantees for the first one or two years. Some breeders even offer health warranties for up to five years. Most commonly, breeders charge more in highly populated areas, where the overall cost of living is also higher. When comparing the Shih Poo cost of adoption in different states, the average price can vary by hundreds, even thousands of dollars. If you do find that reputable breeders in neighboring states sell their puppies at much lower price points, adopting your new Dood out of state could very well pay off. Putting together a breeding program can also require more investments based on what generation the breeder specializes to produce. Like other hybrid breeds, Shih Poos can be either first-generation, second-generation, first-generation backcross, second-generation backcross, and so on. Some breeders, for example, charge less for first-generation pups with purebred Shih Tzu and Poodle parents. Meanwhile, later generations that require at least one Shih Poo parent can sometimes be slightly more expensive. Today, Shih Poos are most commonly bred as first-generation. But, we can expect to see more variations of this Dood in the future, just like with more established Poodle mixes like the Goldendoodle and Labradoodle. Demand The demand in certain locations or areas can also drive up the Shih Poo price. And as you would expect, in-demand breeders often charge more for their puppies as well. Ethical breeders with established programs have long waiting lists that are filled months, sometimes even years in advance. All of this will naturally reflect in the Shih Poo price. Some breeders also charge more for Shih Poos with Poodle-inspired, low-shedding curly coats. As we mentioned earlier, reputable breeders are extremely in demand and can therefore charge more money as well. Not only do they focus on health, they also have extensive knowledge on all things related to raising happy, healthy, and well-rounded puppies, such as training, socialization , and daily care. Moreover, many of the more well-known, reputable Shih Poo breeders are also affiliated with organizations that are committed to responsible breeding. Understandably, these breeders also charge more for their puppies. There are also many hobby breeders that follow responsible breeding guidelines and health testing standards. Their programs are quite small and they only have a litter or two a year. Responsible breeders only use health tested parents, provide genetic health guarantees, keep their dogs and puppies in a safe and loving home environment, feed them a healthy diet, train them, socialize them, and spoil them from birth until adoption. They also work closely with mentors and other ethical dog breeders to share knowledge and best practices. Needless to say, responsible breeders are also extremely transparent about their program and processes, and have no problem answering any questions you might have. Backyard Breeders You might also come across backyard breeders that produce Shih Poo puppies. Oftentimes, these breeders are motivated to bring more adorable Shih Poos into this world for loving owners to adopt. However, they usually lack the education on health testing protocols, puppy rearing methods, training, dietary requirements, and so on. How much do Shih Poos cost when adopting a puppy from a backyard breeder? In addition to that, their lower prices also give them the opportunity to compete with professional breeders, because there are always people wanting to adopt a new puppy for a fraction of the price. Puppy Mills On the lowest tier of breeders we have puppy mills. These breeding facilities keep their costs as low as possible, while constantly breeding new litters to sell to more customers. As they are only motivated by their own financial gain, their parent dogs are kept on tight breeding schedules, resulting in serious health issues for the mamas. They usually keep their dogs and puppies in cages, in horrible conditions, often malnourished and completely neglected. Since these breeding facilities sell their puppies for very low prices compared to professional breeders, they also have plenty of customers to cater to. But remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. But when picking out a kibble for your Dood, opt for high quality formulas that are recommended by other dog owners and veterinarians. Feeding your pup a healthy, balanced, and nutritious diet is the single most effective thing you can do to support their health and promote longevity. Look for dog food formulas that are made with real ingredients and fortified with vitamins, minerals, and supplements. Training An important part in raising a Shih Poo puppy into a well-behaved and confident adult is training. Vet Visits The dreaded expense of veterinary care can put many people off from adopting a pet. A good pet insurance plan will definitely give you some peace of mind. There will be appointments for vaccinations and preventative care for worms and fleas. Grooming The downside of having a hypoallergenic coat is that it requires regular upkeep. Firstly, any Shih Poo owner should purchase a good quality slicker or pin brush , a sturdy comb, and a nail clipper — your most used grooming tools at home. See Also: Click the image A great way to save a substantial amount of money is by grooming your Shih Poo at home. Time Investment It goes without saying that dogs are living, social beings that need your time, affection, and attention. Before adopting a Shih Poo, really consider whether you have enough time for walkies, playtime, and training each day with your dog, especially during those very first months after your puppy gets home. A new puppy is essentially still a baby that needs your constant care and supervision. It can be demanding at times , but so worth it! Other Costs And finally, there will be all of those initial purchases of daily supplies, such as food and water bowls, a leash and collar, dog beds, a crate, toys, treats, and poop bags, which can cost you a few hundred dollars altogether. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. It can even grow louder as they age. Moderate Training Golden Retrievers responds well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. Thus, it will do good for both you and your pet. First, however, you must pick your future pet to adopt from a good rescue. Rescue should have active and preventative programs to reduce animal killing. The Rescue or Shelter must have an aggressive public education about overpopulation. Further, they should exert efforts to apply differential licensing. Thus, a good rescue should comply by neutering all animals before going to their new homes. All these should always direct towards the well-being of the animals. A clean and comfortable place means the animals are also well-cared. Further, it echoes a skilled, compassionate, and good hygiene and healthcare program. How do I pick a good rescue Golden Retriever? Thus, you may want to do the following in choosing a good Golden Retriever. Observe the dog Most shelters have an observation room for you to do this. If it has none, just do your best to find some quiet place. As soon as the dog gets comfortable, you may start observing. The Golden Retriever should be friendly. It should come at you with no hesitation, sniff you, or even jump for attention. If you see it exhibits exciting behavior, like tail wagging, it means it wants you to pet him. Thus, you need to give it different tones and noise, especially with your voice. Touch the dog with caution Shelter or rescue dogs are usually under stress. Thus, you always need to be cautious when touching it. You may also see how it reacts when you touch it. A Golden Retriever likes getting touched or petted. Thus, if you cautiously touch it and begs for more, it can be a good sign for you. Other things you can note would be tail-wagging and endless sniffing and licking. Play with the dog Since Golden Retrievers are playful by nature, you should also play with the dog. Moreover, you need to take note of how well it interacts as it plays. Golden Retrievers are born to play. Thus, it should get excited upon seeing a ball or any other toys. At other times, excitement means circling and moving enthusiastically. Walk with the dog Golden Retrievers like to walk, so you may want to test that out as well. Observe how it reacts when on a leash or when it sees other dogs, people, or anything on the road. A good Golden Retriever does well with walking. So anything it sees around, like cars, bikes, or even other people and animals, would draw its attention. Let the dog interact with other dogs or animals. It may or may not be possible, but you may ask to observe how the dog interacts with other animals. It will also be necessary if you have other pets at home. Golden Retrievers play and interact well with other pets. Thus, if you have a pet at home, it would be great to take it to the shelter and allow it to play with the dog. Summary Finding the ideal Golden Retriever rescue in Oklahoma takes time and effort. beagle bulldog puppies for sale - The PetSafe is an almost hybrid between a collar and a harness. There are also four adjustment points on the harness for a better fit. Possibly another option if you have had no luck with other harness types or you have sought expert advice on handling and controlling your dog. Dog Collar or Harness for a Boxer? Like the Bulldog and Pug , Boxers are a brachycephalic breed — meaning they have short noses which can restrict their airways and cause breathing problems. Although a collar works well on well-behaved dogs and those trained to walk on their lead, Boxers who have a tendency to pull on the lead may not have a great time on a collar. In addition to breathing considerations, dogs which are strong and have a tendency to pull on the lead are at risk of neck and throat injury. For walking and outdoor activity, a harness is often a great way not only to avoid injury to your dog but to help with training to reduce or extinguish pulling behaviour. Types of Dog Harness Not all harnesses for dogs are made equal. There is a range of different types and styles available — and depending on whether they are a puppy, adult or senior — may be helpful to different situations. Vest Harness Often made of breathable lightweight materials like nylon and mesh — these walking harnesses are designed for general wear and comfort. Not designed as a no-pull harness — these are better suited to Boxers who behave on their lead, Puppies who are getting used to harnesses and elderly dogs who may need assistance and where collars are unsuitable. Front and Back Clip Harnesses These are the more common types of harnesses — particularly for dogs who pull and who need training. A back clip harness is a harness that has its leash attachment at the back top. A front-clip dog harness generally has an additional leash point at the front chest. One end is attached to the back — the other attached to the front. This gives heightened control of your dog. Tightening and Control Harnesses These harnesses tighten when your dog pulls. Not only can they hurt your dog by pinching them or causing discomfort — they can result in an increase in pulling behaviour as they attempt to escape the stimulus. These are best used under the guidance of professional dog trainers. Leather Dog Harnesses Leather harnesses can be popular with several breeds, including Boxers. It is important to find a harness that not only works for their behaviour and temperament but for their personality. You may get lucky the first time, but be aware that like collars, harnesses are not natural to a dog. They may resist them at first — or perhaps with some completely. Firstly, be patient — it may just take some time and you may need to coax your Boxer into wearing it. Dogs which pull on a collar can put a lot of pressure on the neck. This can lead not only to discomfort but to gradual damage, throat problems and potentially tracheal collapse Many people choose a harness because of pulling behaviour, however, this is not the only reason. Even if your dog is well behaved on a lead, a harness is still a great choice for walking. How To Measure your Boxer for a Harness It is important to find the right dog harness for your Boxer and one that will fit snugly. If the harness is too loose it could sag or your Boxer could escape from it. Boxers are also prone to hip dysplasia so it is important to offer them the support they need you may also want to check out support and rehabilitation harnesses if your Boxer suffers from this and other mobility problems. For this article, we have based the harnesses around the medium mark on the sizing charts. If you find your Boxer measures between two different harness sizes e. Firstly, measure the widest part of the chest with a tape measure. This is usually a few inches, or roughly four fingers, distance from behind your Boxers front legs. Next, add a few inches to your total. This gives your dog a little bit of flexibility and will also allow for a small amount of weight gain. Secondly, you should measure the circumference of your Boxers neck if required. Finally, again if necessary, weigh your dog. We do this every time we visit the vet and keep a note of it. Queries like what are the best harnesses for boxer dogs or which harness is good for boxer dogs. Why use a harness for a boxer dog? That is why many people opt to buy a harness instead. Harnesses also come in handy because they make it harder for your dog to escape from his leash. If you have an excitable Boxer, you might find that he slips out of his collar regularly and runs off when he catches sight of something interesting. With a harness, this is much less likely to happen. Boxers can be strong, active dogs. They can be a bit stubborn and difficult to train as well. It is important that you get the right harness for your boxer so that you can control him easily and keep him safe. There are many different types of harness for boxer dog to choose from. Some work well for certain breeds but not for others. You need to consider several factors before making your choice. The first thing you will want to consider is what type of dog you have. A big, strong dog like a boxer may need more support than a smaller breed such as a Chihuahua or Dachshund. This means that the material used in making the harness may not be strong enough for him to wear it comfortably without any pain or discomfort. Also, if your boxer has been trained already then he may not like wearing something new on his body! The next thing to consider when choosing a harness for your boxer is their weight. Boxers come in a wide variety of weights depending on the breeder and the age of your dog. So it is important to do some research before you buy a harness so that you purchase one that fits your dog correctly. You also need to think about where your dog will be spending most of his time while wearing the harness. If he spends a lot of time indoors then he may prefer a lighter weight model that allows him more freedom of movement while still being able to hold onto his leash securely. Type of harness There are a few different types of harnesses available on the market, and each type has its own unique features. For example, some come with padded straps, while others have extra leashes. Standard Harness: Simple in design and used by multiple dog breeds, this harness can be found in most pet stores. Adjustable Harness: As the name suggests, this harness allows you to adjust it for the perfect fit on your dog. This type is ideal for dogs that are still growing or dogs that change weight often. Step-In Harness: This type of harness features a hole where your dog steps through so the straps go over their back instead of under their stomach. It is then secured with Velcro or snaps in the front. Step-in harnesses are ideal for small dogs as they offer more control when walking them compared to other styles Training harness: This harness is used for teaching your dog to pull and for training sled dogs. The dog wears a collar, and the lines are attached to that, not to the harness. Figure-eight harness: This is a good choice for a dog who pulls excessively since it puts pressure against his chest when he pulls. The innovative placement of the Front Leash Attachment helps prevent choking. According to the PetSafe website, this harness is suitable for dogs that like to pull on their leashes. With a single leash attachment point at the front and four straps for a better fit, this harness might be a good choice for training your dog not to pull. The Tactical Dog Harness has been ergonomically designed to fit an array of dog breeds. Easy to adjust, please measure your pet before placing an order. The harnesses are not designed to carry heavy weights on their own, but provide a convenient way to attach your pooch to a leash or anywhere else you need. This harness uses a martingale loop at the back of its chest to help control large dogs that pull too hard. It is designed to make training your dog easier by using the top attachment point for walking and the front attachment point for more control. There are a few different ways of using this harness and it comes with a handy guide to help you adjust it. It has 2 lead attachment points and reinforced webbing at the chest to resist pulling, ensuring additional control. Suitable for everyday walks and training. Designed for urban walks, power harnesses are easy to fit and provide you with professional control. The sturdy construction of the harness allows you to control your dog with confidence. Reliability and durability are guaranteed by the shatterproof buckle, and the use of first-class materials. The reflective elements of the harness ensure good visibility, and the first-class lining provides comfort. The question of whether a dog collar or harness for boxer dogs is better for a Boxer is not easy to answer. It really depends on the individual Boxer, their training, and what you are using it for. Both collars and harnesses have their own pros and cons regarding these factors. If you are unsure which one to use, you can always try them both out to see which one suits your Boxer best. A dog harness is a more natural way to walk your Boxer. Dog collars create uncomfortable pressure on the trachea, cause coughing and gagging, and can even lead to serious damage to the trachea. Boxers have a tendency to pull when walking and a harness gives you much better control over your dog. In contrast, a dog collar puts pressure on the neck which could cause serious injury if your Boxer pulls or lunges. Boxers are very strong dogs, and if they pull on their leash, you could end up with a shoulder injury. A harness makes it easier for you to control your Boxer. A harness is also more comfortable for your Boxer than a collar. Many dog owners use both a collar and a harness. The harness is put on the dog when the dog is outside and the collar is used for identification purposes only. I would choose a harness for boxer dog because the leash can handle a bigger dog. A collar might break if you try to get the dog off of another dog. In Conclusion When deciding on a harness for boxer dog, there are a few things that you need to consider. One of the most important is deciding how you want them to wear and we will guide you through that process. Many different types of harnesses are available on the market today. Harnesses should not be used as a replacement for a collar but do offer an extra layer of protection against pulling and escaping from the owner. Testimonials "We wanted a sister for our 6 year old GSD, Katja, she had just lost her favorite kitty Tattoo, who was 33 years old. I then started researching GSD Breeders in our area. I researched them thoroughly. From the moment Bobbi and I spoke on the phone I knew this was the perfect fit, she sent us pics of her mom n dad and pics of Zasha. All of the parents history, health records, vet checks, AKC certification and verification. We called a handful breeders and met with a couple and were saddened and discouraged. She cared, she asked tons of questions, wanted us on speaker phone to get a feel of our family. You could tell her dogs and puppies were her family just as much as any human. Bobbie encouraged us to talk it over, call her back with any questions and we were welcome anytime for a visit. We did call back with questions and planned a visit the next Saturday as they live 3 hours from us. I have never been greeted into a strangers home so warmly. All her dogs are amazing, loving, smart, beautiful and tested. Justin brought his girl Kimber home and we remained in touch by sending photos, messages and her checking in. Fast forward 1. He said to me "Mom, come on - it's Bobbie! If she's home, I bet she'd love it" so I sent a quick message and immediately she said "yes! It was intended as a short visit but we were having a nice time and Kimber and our lab were having so much fun playing with her dogs that we took much of their afternoon. She had a 5 month old puppy that we all feel in love with for her goofiness and loving manner. Sounded as though all would be fine in time but Bobbie wouldn't take that chance in case she needed extra medical care in her future etc so she gave the person who had a deposit on this girl her pick of the litter instead. Over the next 4 months she was monitored and vet checked and released with a clean bill of health. We are a busy house with 2 of Bobbie's German Shepherds, a lab and a yorkie but always try to take moments to send Bobbie updates of their antics and spoiling. I can tell you in our hunt we did not come across anyone as dedicated, responsible, committed or loving with her dogs than Bobbie and we can't leave her children or Mike out - they too were there every visit and very engaged and supportive with the dogs. Much love, " - Michelle Evjen-Freed and family Bobbie is wonderful lady, who deeply cares about her dogs. All her dogs is absolutely stunning, well behaved. I'm mom of her 2 gorgeous German Shepherds. Bobbie is very honest and responsible breeder. I love Bobbie and highly recommend her!! Julia Goudie.
