I am an owner handler and poodle fancier dedicated to responsible pet ownership education with hopes that everyone will meet and interact with a beautifully bred, well behaved standard poodle. It's my strongly held opinion that anyone considering breeding should be involved in their breed. They should be active in every available aspect, from health research to rescue, from the conformation ring to the bedside of the Nursing Home with their TDI, as there is NO other way to continually learn about their breed. Heritage Breeders dedicated to the purebred animal of their passion are needed. Without Heritage Breeders, breeds will die. With NOLA's, I am passionate about improving the structure, health and temperament of "the color", red and apricot standard poodles, carefully breeding to maintain the purebred standard poodle, with focus on diversity, incorporating rare pedigrees that studies indicate are essential to the health and longevity of my much loved Standard Poodles. This banner was created for me by my artistic poodle lover and breeder friend, Becky Goodbey. It's incredibly rewarding to see my dream for the NOLA bloodline becoming a reality. There is still so much I believe is possible with the color. But what a FINE start! Breeding the Color. It's an endeavor! Puppies that are the deepest red can turn apricot by the time they are a year old and pups born almost cream will surprisingly darken! My belief, and it's shown itself to be true with the outstanding improvement in structure and carriage of the red and apricot poodles of the NOLA line, that outcrossing to the most outstanding quality of black and even blue or cream standard poodles is the ONLY way to improve the color. For years red breeders have refused to outcross, but now, more and more breeders are realizing the need to outcross. Even the red breeders who won't outcross have purchased bloodlines from breeders who did outcross. The end result is breeding a better poodle, which is the only reason to breed! When I pick my pick, I have to close my eyes to the color of the puppy, knowing the color is in the pedigree, and chose the best puppy for the future of the bloodline, which sometimes, most often it seems like, is not the darkest or the most red puppy. Exceptional examples of red and apricot standard poodles, with the occasional black and even gasp! Antoinette entered her first AKC dog Show at 11 months old, taking Reserve the first time in the show ring with me showing her! Apricot Poodles March 14, Apricot Poodles are one of the most popular Poodle colors. Apricot appears in all three sizes of Poodles: Standard, Miniature and Toy. The beautiful shade as well as the rarity of this color makes apricot Poodles highly sought-after. Today we will look at this type of Poodle as its characteristics. Even AKC Poodle breeders sometimes categorize their dogs under the wrong color. Apricot is a dilution of brown. Ideally it should appear to be a bright, sunny color. Apricot is difficult to breed for as it is a recessive gene and it quickly fades in UV light. If your Poodle spends a lot of time outside, his apricot color will soon look like a lighter cream color. The nose and eye rims of an apricot Poodle should ideally be black or dark brown. A medium-colored brown is accepted as per the breed standard, but not encouraged. History of apricot-colored Poodles Poodles have been around for a long time. Some paintings show Poodles in the 15th and 16th century. Back then, most Poodles would have been white or parti-colored. The new color quickly became popular and was bred mainly in the UK. It would take a while before the color became prevalent in the other Poodle varieties though: Only in , the first apricot Miniature Poodle was born. In the s, Poodles became more and more popular in North America and have been a beloved companion dog ever since. Due to the rarity of the apricot color and its recessive nature, not a lot of Poodles are available in this color! Are apricot Poodles rare? Yes — apricot Poodles are very rare! As a recessive color, apricot is only shown in a puppy if both parents carry a copy of the gene. Most Poodles are black or white with the occasional Parti Poodle who has two colors. Other Poodle colors such as red, cream, blue or brown are allowed by the breed standard but less common. The apricot Poodle is very rare among the Poodle colors, which makes these dogs very sought-after and potentially pricey. Some puppy buyers have to be on a waitlist for an apricot puppy for months or years. You should only decide for these dogs if you are willing to be patient and wait for your perfect apricot puppy for a long time. As all Poodles, apricot Poodles have a tendency to develop gastrointestinal issues. You should only feed your dog high-quality food and make sure that you take him to the vet if he shows any signs of diarrhea or vomiting. Like all Poodles, apricot Poodles are highly intelligent and will require daily exercise and training. A bored and under-exercised Poodle will quickly develop a range of unwanted behaviors, such as reactivity, incessant barking or chewing of furniture. Grooming your apricot Poodle Every color Poodle will require regular, consistent grooming efforts in order to keep the coat beautiful and the skin healthy. Letting your Poodle develop mats will lead to hot spots and can even cause severe skin infections. You need to brush your Poodle every day. He should also be bathed with a Poodle-specific shampoo about once a month. Many Poodle owners choose to have this done by a professional groomer. Depending on whether you want to show your Poodle or not, you can keep his coat either in a full show groom or a more convenient haircut. The teddy bear cut is very popular especially for Miniature Poodles. Training Poodles are generally easy to train as they are highly intelligent and love to work together with their owner. They excel at a variety of dog sports, such as agility, competition obedience, disc dog or dock diving. Especially for those dogs, participating in a weekly dog sport will be very beneficial. If you choose to show your dog in AKC conformation events, you will need to train them to show well in the show ring. This includes walking and trotting on the leash and standing still while the judge examines your dog. The most common behavioral problems in apricot Poodles are anxiety, nervousness and excessive barking. Extensive socialization is necessary to turn them into well-mannered and calm companions. This includes positive exposure to people, dogs, different places and a variety of sounds. Poodles can show prey drive. Do not underestimate that and make sure to teach your dog impulse control and recall skills. This is especially important if your Poodle is sharing your home with smaller animals, such as cats. How much do apricot Poodles cost? As a rare color, you can expect to pay more for an apricot Poodle of either size. The Bottom Line Apricot Poodles are very popular due to their unusual coloring and their rarity. Many owners are drawn to this special kind of Poodle because they are so unique. It is important to not let rarity alone be a deciding factor when it comes to picking your future puppy though! You should never buy any dog Poodle or not for his color alone. Apricot Poodles will require the same care, grooming, training and exercise as any other kind of Poodle. Due to the at times nervous nature of this breed, it is really important that they are well-socialized and get a lot of positive exposure, especially during their puppyhood. Apricot Poodles excel at a variety of dog sports and will love to participate in those with their owner! Due to the limited supply of apricot Poodles, expect to be put on a waitlist for a potential puppy. The price will likely be higher than that for a more common Poodle color as well. Being patient pays off though: These dogs are amazing companions that will brighten up every day! Unleash the real potential of your companion! We will email you daily with training tips, ideas and videos. This is an introductory course into our training philosophy. You will get customized video lessons based on your training goals — and you can implement them in just 5 minutes a day. The apricot patches are usually located on their ears, around their eyes and on their backs. The apricot patches are very light in color and are somewhere between a light red and a cream with peachy undertones. If these changes occur, it will be within the first two years of their lives which will make them look like a cream and white Poodle. Light Apricot Poodle Light Apricot Poodles have a coat that is almost cream in color with peachy undertones. Phantom Poodles have a coat with a solid background and a secondary color in patches in very specific locations. These locations include the chin, throat, chest, legs, beneath their tail, above their eyes or on the sides of their muzzle. In this case the solid background is black and the secondary color is apricot. Apricot Sable Poodle Sable Poodles have hairs that are black-tipped with roots in a lighter solid color, specifically apricot. The sable hairs cover most of their body and they usually have a white patches on their chest, muzzle and paws. The black tips of the sable hairs are usually most prominent on the end of their ears and on the top of their heads. Apricot Poodle With White Chest Some Apricot Poodles are not fully apricot in color but rather feature white patches on their chest, paws, chin and top of their muzzle. That being said, Apricot Poodles with white chests are not as common as fully Apricot Poodles. You are more likely to find apricot and white coats in Poodle mix breeds like Maltipoos and Cavapoos.

Conclusion Understanding Dog Dandruff Dogs will normally shed dead skin cells, but it becomes a problem when there is an excessive production of the dead skin cells in the haircoat. This is often accompanied by an increased production of sebum, or oils in the skin, or the opposite where the skin is really dry. It can also be a combination of excessive oils and dry skin. When your Golden Retriever has dandruff, you will find varying amounts of small white flakes in the fur. Sometimes called Seborrhea, these flakes can cause itchiness in your dog, often getting bad enough to cause inflammation, redness, or irritation. Simply put, dandruff is a collection of extra dead skin cells in the haircoat. There are primary and secondary causes of dandruff in dogs. Primary causes are rare, inherited conditions. There is a long list of common secondary causes. Primary Dandruff Primary dandruff, or primary seborrhea, is an inherited condition that causes an increased production of dead skin cells or oils in the skin. It is usually seen in dogs under one year of age. Golden Retrievers can get a primary dandruff condition called Ichthyosis. This is a genetic mutation that causes scaly, flakey skin, most commonly in puppies, but also seen in adults. Secondary Dandruff Secondary dandruff, or secondary seborrhea, is dandruff that develops due to another skin disorder. Secondary dandruff can be cured by treating the underlying skin condition once it is identified. Here are some disorders that can cause secondary dandruff. Below are a few of the common culprits. Fleas are visible with the naked eye and easily treated with various flea preventative products. Scabies Sarcoptic mange, or scabies, causes severe itchiness and skin irritation leading to dandruff. Demodex mites cause hair loss and dandruff. Cheyletiellosis Cheyletiellosis is caused by a mite and is known as walking dandruff since the mites move under the skin flakes. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose these conditions through various skin tests and will treat your dog for mite infections with topical and oral medications. Allergies Allergies are most often environmental or food-related, but can also be caused by contact irritants or topical parasites such as fleas. Sometimes allergies are specific to a certain season, whether it is a cold and dry environment, a hot and humid environment, or the various pollens found during the season. Allergies cause extreme itchiness which leads to skin irritation, inflammation, redness, dandruff, and even skin infections. Treating allergies requires a multi-modal approach. The keys are to find and treat the cause of the allergy, stop the itching, treat any secondary infections, and support the skin with moisturizing supplements. Food allergies are treated with a special diet change depending on the protein causing the allergy. Contact allergies are treated by removing the source causing the irritation. Flea allergies are treated by treating and removing the fleas. You will find dandruff in many dogs with allergies because there is a disruption in their skin barrier due to the allergy and they are licking, chewing, or scratching at their skin. Skin Infection Dogs can get skin infections caused by bacteria or fungus, most commonly yeast. These skin infections are usually brought on after the skin barrier has been disrupted by excessive itching. Sometimes, dogs can get bacteria or fungus on their skin after swimming, if they have a dirty or matted haircoat, wounds, or allergies. Skin infections are treated with various topical and oral antibacterial and antifungal medications. Ringworm is a common type of topical skin fungus that can cause skin flaking. Patients with these diseases are often found to have dry, flakey skin and sometimes a thin haircoat with associated hair loss. These diseases are diagnosed through various blood tests, and treatment in these cases starts with treating the underlying disease. However, if you are feeding your dog a low-quality food, it may be lacking in important ingredients such as omega-3 fatty acids or vitamin E. Make sure you are feeding your dog high quality foods. Purina Pro Plan dog foods are a great start, and they make some for about every type of dog. Immune-Mediated Diseases There are several immune-mediated diseases where the body destroys normal skin cells or sebaceous glands, causing abnormalities such as dandruff, too much or too little oil in the skin, disruption of the layers of skin, wounds, and sores. These diseases are diagnosed through blood tests and skin biopsies and are treating with various medications and supplements. Treatments For Dandruff Since most cases of dandruff are secondary to another disorder, the first step is treating the underlying skin condition. This will often include various topical and oral medications. Bathing: Use a mild and unscented aloe or oatmeal soothing shampoo with lukewarm water. Make sure to lather up your dog well and rinse the shampoo thoroughly. It is also important to make sure their hair dries properly. Omega-3 fatty acids: These oral fatty acid supplements have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and are key in keeping the skin and haircoat healthy. Good quality diet: As previously mentioned, ensuring your dog is eating a well-balanced and nutrient rich diet can help prevent and solve many skin issues. Conclusion Overall, dandruff is a manageable condition once the underlying disease or disorder is identified and treated. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on February 10, You notice that your dog has dry white flakes on his back and has been leaving flakes on his favorite dog bed. Just like in humans, dandruff occurs in dogs when flakes of dead skin cells start falling out of place and hanging out on the hair and wherever they land. While in humans dandruff usually affects the head, in dogs one of the most common places is the back especially toward the tail. You may see dry white "flakes" on your dog's coat or in places where he likes to hang out and nap. You may also notice that his skin is dry and be able to see it flake when giving him a good scratch. The official name for dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis. Your dog's skin includes sebaceous glands that produce sebum, an oil that helps to keep the skin moist and flexible. When these glands produce too much sebum, it causes an imbalance in the skin. There are two forms of seborrheic dermatitis: seborrhea sicca dry seborrhea and seborrhea oleosa oily seborrhea. Dogs can have a combination of the two. A variety of things can cause dandruff in dogs, and any breed or mix can be affected. In some cases it is a primary issue due to a genetic condition like primary seborrhea most commonly in cocker spaniels , West Highland white terriers, and basset hounds or ichthyosis affected breeds include golden retrievers , Cavalier King Charles spaniels , and Yorkshire terriers. But more often it is either caused by something in the environment or an underlying health disorder. Dry Air Just like us, dogs can be afflicted by dry skin in the winter months when the air is drier than normal. Forced-air heating can exacerbate the issue. If you only notice dandruff on your dog during the winter months, lack of humidity in the air may be to blame. Like other external parasites such as fleas , ticks , and Demodex and Sarcoptes mites, these unwelcome guests live and feed on your dog's skin, and will cause him to be very itchy. Obesity and Nutritional Issues An improper diet can cause your dog to miss out on nutrients that he needs to keep his skin and coat healthy. Make sure that your dog is eating a high-quality, balanced dog food. Fatty acids such as omega-3s and omega-6s play a role in skin health, and some dogs benefit from additional supplementation of these in their diets. It's important to check with your vet before introducing anything new to your dog's diet, however. As you know, obesity puts your dog at risk for a wide variety of health conditions. Poor skin health is just the tip of the iceberg. Skin Infections Bacterial and fungal infections on the skin can also cause dandruff to occur. These tiny invaders may also take advantage of your dog's weakened skin due to other conditions to cause a secondary infection. Whether the dandruff or the skin infection came first, bacterial and fungal infections require appropriate treatment to get your dog's skin back to a healthy state. Allergies Food and environmental allergies in dogs usually manifest as skin problems. Affected dogs may be itchy during particular times of the year, suffer from chronic ear and skin infections, or constantly lick their paws. Dandruff is usually just one symptom of a dog with allergies. Hormonal Conditions Diseases such as hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease can cause changes in your dog's skin health. A weakened immune system will also make him more vulnerable to secondary infections. Idiopathic Seborrhea Sometimes we don't know what causes seborrheic dermatitis, hence the use of the term 'idiopathic,' or spontaneous. Dogs where the cause of flaky skin is unknown can be treated symptomatically to provide relief, and additional management care can be provided as needed. When to See the Vet for Your Dog's Dandruff Problem If your dog just has mild seasonal or occasional dandruff, it's probably nothing to worry about. But you'll want to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian if your dog is also experiencing any of these symptoms: Itchiness An odor to the skin Excessive amounts of dandruff Red, irritated skin Other signs of illness or discomfort Diagnosing the cause of your dog's dandruff will depend on your dog's exact symptoms and what your vet suspects might be the problem based on a physical exam. Dog Dandruff Treatment and Home Remedies Depending on how severe the case is, your pup's dandruff can often be treated on your own at home. Incorporate some of these tips into your regular care routine to help get your dog's dandruff under control and help him feel more comfortable again. Grooming Regular grooming is the cornerstone of skin and coat health in dogs, and plays an important role in managing dandruff. Brushing your dog helps to disperse the excess skin oils throughout his coat so that they aren't pooling on the skin, and also removes dead hair. Brush daily while your dog is having an outbreak of dandruff, and weekly for general maintenance grooming. Misting with water can help to decrease static for long haired dogs, or you can use a conditioning spray intended for dogs, though you'll want to consult with your veterinarian first to make sure that any grooming product you use won't impact other treatments your dog is receiving. Bathing Giving your dog a bath is often beneficial for seborrhea outbreaks and bacterial and fungal infections. Once your vet has diagnosed the cause of your dog's skin problems, she may prescribe an appropriate medicated shampoo. Follow directions on the bottle carefully. Some shampoos need to be left on the dog for several minutes to work their magic. Also pay attention to how often your dog should be bathed , as bathing too often can dry out your dog's skin and either make the current symptoms worse or cause additional problems. Rinse thoroughly after all baths, whether you are using a medicated shampoo for a dandruff outbreak or regular shampoo for maintenance grooming as many shampoos can be irritating if they are not rinsed off. Always be cautious when choosing a supplement, as these products are not as heavily regulated as medications. Healthy Diet Be sure to feed your pooch a balanced dietthat meets your dog's nutritional needs. Choose a diet that has an AAFCO Statement on the label indicating that the food meets the nutrient profiles for your dog's life stage or that it has undergone feeding trials. Humidifier Usage It may be beneficial for you and your pets! The steam can help soothe and hydrate his dry skin to make your dog more comfortable and less itchy. Treat Other Health Conditions As well as home care to manage dandruff, your dog will need to be treated for any underlying conditions that he may have. Once the underlying condition has been addressed, your dog's skin will be much healthier. Was this page helpful? Final Notes What Is Dandruff? Dandruff is a condition characterized by the appearance of flakes of dead skin cells. Dandruff is typically accompanied by itching and skin irritation. For dogs, dandruff can cause non-stop scratching, which can ultimately lead to hair loss. Seborrhea Seborrhea is the medical term for dandruff, and will probably be what your vet will call it if you seek medical attention. Dandruff and seborrhea may be used interchangeably, but it is actually just one cause of dandruff. Keratinization is when the protective outer layer of the skin is constantly renewed by new skin cells. Seborrhea causes an increased scale formation, excessive greasiness of the skin and hair coat, and often secondary inflammation and infection. Seborrhea can either be primary or secondary. Secondary seborrhea, however, is a sign of an underlying disease that results in this excessive scaling, crusting, or oiliness. Secondary seborrhea is typically accompanied by pus-filled inflammation, infection, and hair loss. Causes So, what causes dandruff in dogs? From allergies to yeast infections, there are various factors that can cause dandruff in dogs. Primary seborrhea is not common and is typically genetic. Secondary seborrhea is far more common, and is usually caused by an underlying skin condition or allergies. In addition to dry and flaky skin, most dogs with seborrhea will also experience oily skin. You can usually treat seborrhea with medicated shampoos. Keratolytic products can help to remove excess dead skin cells and keratoplastic products can reduce scale formation. Both of these can be effective in treating seborrhea and reducing dandruff in your dog. Allergies Allergies, including both environmental and dog food allergies , can cause dandruff in dogs. Dogs with allergies will usually have dry flaky skin, chronic ear and skin infections, and may constantly lick their paws. In order to figure out what your dog is allergic to, your vet may recommend effective flea control, a special hypoallergenic diet trial, or perform testing to check for environmental allergies. Bacterial infections Certain bacterial infections, such as folliculitis and impetigo, can also cause dandruff in dogs. Folliculitis is an infection that causes sores, bumps, and scabs on the skin. Folliculitis will typically happen along with other skin problems, like mange or allergies. It can be treated with oral antibiotics and antibacterial ointments. Impetigo is another infection that is more common in puppies. Yeast infections Yeast infections in dogs will usually occur in the toes or ears. A dog with a yeast infection will constantly scratch or lick and chew on their paws, so if you notice your dog doing any of these, bring them to the vet. Symptoms of a yeast infection can include irritated, itchy, or discolored skin. It can be easily treated with a topical ointment, but in more serious cases, may require oral drugs or medicated sprays. Parasitic infections Parasitic infections can also cause dandruff in dogs. Fleas are the most common parasitic infection, then mange, which is caused by mites. There are two different types of mange infections: Sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange. Demodectic mange cannot be transmitted between dogs or humans. It can cause bald spots, scabbing, or sores on your pup. Endocrine disorders Endocrine disorders, such as Cushing's disease and hypothyroidism, can also cause dandruff in dogs. Too much cortisol can cause multiple clinical signs, including dandruff. Hypothyroidism in dogs is caused by an inflammation or shrinkage of the thyroid gland. In either case, a weakened immune system will make your dog more susceptible to secondary infections which can cause dandruff. Cold weather and stress can also contribute to dandruff and will usually subside by itself in time. However, there are a few instances when dandruff in dogs is something to take more seriously. You should see a vet if your dog has any of the following: An excessive amount of flakes that come on suddenly Itchiness on their skin that seems to be uncomfortable or painful Very red skin underneath the flakes An odor associated with the dandruff Any of these symptoms could indicate something more serious is happening to your dog. If you notice any of the above symptoms, you should take your dog to the vet immediately. Diagnosis There are a few things your vet will need to do in order to properly diagnose your dog with dandruff. Depending on the severity of the dandruff, lab testing may also be required. Your vet will conduct a thorough physical examination of your dog, including internal organ systems and the skin. The skin examination will document the type of flakes on the dog, and if there is any hair loss, odor, scales, or oiliness on the skin and hair coat as well. If your dog has boils, pimples, and other bumps on their skin, that likely is an indication of a bacterial infection. If they have darkening of the skin, that could be a result of chronic skin irritation, and skin thickening shows chronic itching. The vet will also check for a yeast infection that could be causing the dandruff. Your vet may also run tests, such as a hormone test, skin culture test, skin scrapings, or a skin biopsy. Hormone tests look for hormonal imbalances, skin cultures look for bacterial and fungi infections, skin scrapings identify parasites, and a skin biopsy looks for inflammatory cells, bacteria, yeast, or fungus. Thankfully, there are various ways you can go about treating dandruff in dogs. Ultimately, the best course of treatment for your pup will depend on the underlying issue. For example, if the dandruff is due to an infection, the vet will prescribe treatment for the infection, which will in turn help the dandruff. This may involve dietary changes if your dog has food allergies. If your dog has environmental allergies, you should clean often to remove dust, wash their pet beds frequently, and bathe them on a weekly basis. Consistent bathing and grooming Inconsistent grooming can often cause dandruff in dogs. Bathing and grooming your dog consistently is key to keeping your pup clean and reducing the risk of infections. Whether you bring your dog to a groomer or you clean them at home, you want to use non-irritating shampoo only. Do not use your own anti-dandruff shampoo on your dog. There are many brands that have dog shampoos that are specifically formulated to treat dandruff. This will pick up any dirt and debris, but also will stimulate the oil glands in the top layer of their skin. Brushing their fur releases these oils which adds a shine to their coat and helps get rid of dandruff. Start with a coarse brush and then finish with a softer brush and a towel. Minimize stress Stress can often cause dandruff in dogs. Various circumstances can cause a dog to feel stressed, even though you might not be aware of it. Things like changing households or getting a new animal can cause your dog to feel stressed, and as a result, will have dandruff. You can treat stress in dogs by removing them from the actual stresser. You should also get them to exercise, which can help your dog release tension. In some cases, medication may be needed to help alleviate some of their stress. Temperature and humidity can exacerbate dandruff. During winter, dandruff is especially common. If this is the case for your pup, try incorporating more fatty acids into their diet. You can do this with pills or by adding oil to their food. Dandruff in dogs is quite common, and in most cases, it can be easily treated. There are various ways you can go about getting rid of dog dandruff. Proper grooming will keep their hair and skin clean and dandruff free. You should also always feed your dog a good diet to keep them healthy. A humidifier and anti-dandruff shampoos and ointments may also do the trick. What causes dandruff in dogs? Various factors can cause dandruff in dogs, such as allergic reactions, bacterial infections, yeast infections, parasitic infections, and endocrine disorders. Should I be worried if my dog has dandruff? In most cases, dandruff in dogs is nothing to worry about. However, there are a few instances when dog dandruff is something to be more concerned about. If your dog experiences itchiness, has an odor emanating from his or her skin, excessive dandruff, hair loss, irritated skin, or other signs of discomfort, you should bring them to the vet as soon as possible. Dogs can get dandruff, too. Although your pup might not be embarrassed or even aware of this white flaky skin, it can definitely be irritating for them to deal with. In many cases, dandruff in dogs can be treated with a simple anti-dandruff shampoo and a good bath. Published on Dec 08, and updated at Apr 05, .But did you know that puppies can get dandruff too? What causes dog dandruff? Dogs will groom themselves to get rid of the old, dead skin cells as they shed, keeping their coat in top condition. Puppies are more likely to develop dandruff than older dogs. These glands become more developed as your pup gets older, which often will bring an end to their dandruff issues. Brushing your puppy will help to spread the natural oils in their coat, which will often result in a shinier coat and could go some way to combatting dandruff. However, there are lots of reasons why your puppy might have dandruff aside from underdeveloped glands. Health conditions that lead to dog dandruff Skin infections Skin infections can cause dry and itchy skin, which naturally leads to the development of dandruff. To identify if your puppy is suffering from a skin condition or infection, your vet will take some skin samples to make an accurate diagnosis. Illness Flaky skin could be a giveaway that your pooch is feeling under the weather. If they are lethargic or unwell, they are less likely to keep up their high grooming standards, leading to more dandruff building up. Excessive scratching could lead to your puppy getting dandruff. Are white flakes hanging around your home and dog a nuisance? But there's no need for alarm or panic when dealing with pet dandruff. In most cases, dandruff is very manageable. With a bit of determination and patience, you can help your dog's coat regain its healthy look and feel. Dandruff is fairly common in pets, but it's important to discover its origins so you can accurately assess and rid your pet of annoying flakes. If you're curious for heady, scientific details, the official name for doggy dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis or seborrhea for short. Wow—that's a mouthful! Before we dive into the various ways you can rid your pet of the flaky nuisance, let's first discuss the leading causes and symptoms associated with pet dandruff. Pet dandruff is pretty easy to detect. It appears as small, white flakes that cling to your dog's fur. These flakes can also fall off and attach to bedding, upholstery and a variety of other household items. Another giveaway that your dog might have dandruff is if she's constantly licking, scratching or biting her skin. Occasionally, if a more severe issue is present, you might also notice redness, hair loss and even a foul odor near affected areas. While dandruff in itself isn't harmful, it's definitely unsightly. Dandruff tends to be a secondary issue, so it's essential to get to the root of the problem and treat the underlying cause—not just the dandruff. Dandruff appears when your dog's sebaceous glands over-produce an oil called sebum. This oil helps keep your precious pup's skin moist and healthy. However, when the sebaceous glands produce too much oil, it causes an imbalance, which in turn causes dandruff. Your dog's dandruff comes in two forms: dry seborrhea sicca and oily seborrhea oleosa. And it can occur for several reasons: Bacterial and fungal infections take advantage of a dog's compromised immunity. An unbalanced diet can decrease essential nutrients needed for a healthy coat and overall health—including obesity in some cases. Seasonal or environmental allergies can cause dryness of the skin. Stress can present in a variety of ways , including dandruff. Grooming activities, like too much bathing. Every dog requires bathing from time to time, but probably not as often as you might think. In many cases, your dog's dandruff is simply a symptom of dry skin caused by weather or seasonal shedding. You can prevent or remove this type of dandruff with a few simple changes to your grooming routine. Grooming .Brush your pup regularly with an appropriate brush or comb to help keep the skin and coat healthy and shiny, which may prevent dandruff in the first place. If your pup does have dandruff, the brush and comb will help remove the flakes. Sometimes the shampoo you use dries out your pup's skin. Be sure to choose a shampoo that doesn't strip your dog's coat of natural oils,3 and avoid using human shampoos because human hair care products aren't formulated for a dog's pH levels. Both soothe your dog's skin and coat and keep them healthy. Plus, the shampoos prevent flea reinfestations for 28 days. Oatmeal baths. Oatmeal baths are a well-known treatment for dandruff and are easy to do at home. Mix the ingredients thoroughly. Wet your dog with warm water, slowly add the oatmeal mixture and lather as you would shampoo. Allow the mixture to sit on your dog's skin for several minutes before rinsing. Do you live in a dry climate, or is there less moisture in the home often in the winter? Try a humidifier; they add moisture back into the environment, which will help the skin from drying out. A humidifier is not only good for your dog, but it will benefit you as well—your hair and skin will definitely thank you. If the above suggestions don't seem to help your dog's skin and coat, it may be time to consult a professional. Your vet may prescribe a new dog food or even vitamin supplements, depending on the root cause. A quick once-over by the vet and a possible blood draw can help properly diagnose the issue, which helps formulate an appropriate treatment plan. If you don't currently have a family vet, finding someone you can trust with your furry friend is important. Remember, a caring veterinarian wants to partner with you to ensure your pup's health and happiness. Now that you have a better understanding of pet dandruff, you should be able to assess your pet's needs better. Diagnosing and treating your dog's dandruff can be RUFF, but you can handle it! Now that you know what to look for, grab your favorite grooming tool and enjoy some one-on-one time with your favorite pup. Your time together can be both enjoyable and productive. Skin and coat care may not be the last step in ridding your furry friend of dandruff, but it's a step in the right direction. Xu, Elizabeth. Jamieson, Amy. Final Thoughts However, you cannot treat dandruff in a Golden Retriever without understanding its causes. This is so that you can avoid reoccurrences after a time. Not only that, but the issue happens due to medical conditions at times too. In this post, we will discuss everything about it. Causes Here are the top reasons why your Golden Retriever may be suffering from dandruff: Primary Dandruff Following are the two types of primary dandruff issues your Golden Retriever can experience: Standard Dandruff Seborrhea Dandruff can happen in your pet dog because of primary and secondary reasons. You should note that primary dandruff occurs because of a genetic condition. If your Golden Retriever suffers from primary dandruff, it means that its parents had the condition. Thus, it was passed down to your pet genetically. Primary dandruff occurs because the dog's skin may be producing excessive oils. It can also happen due to an increase in dead skin cells. Typically, this happens in Golden Retriever puppies of age one or below. Ichthyosis This is another genetic condition that primarily happens in Golden Retrievers. However, this time the issue occurs because of a mutation that may be present in some families of this breed. The condition causes your dog to have scaly and flakey skin. Golden Retriever ichthyosis is mainly in puppies, and most of them grow out of it. However, this does not happen at all times. So you may also find adult dogs with this condition. The good news is that you can treat this issue through skin soothers and moisturizers. Secondary Dandruff A key thing to note is that this dandruff occurs because of skin disorders. However, this happens because of environmental factors or other external reasons. So here are the leading causes that may result in your Golden Retriever facing this dandruff issue: Parasites External parasites can easily infest your pet's fur if you don't take proper precautions. This is also the most prevalent reason for dandruff in a Golden Retriever. The top thing to remember is that there are numerous parasites that cause different types of dandruff. Fleas are one of the common parasites that affect various dogs, including Golden Retrievers. They jump on an animal's body and feed on its blood for survival. While doing so, the parasite can cause dandruff. Typically, your pet may experience itchiness because of this bug. The excellent news about flea dandruff is that this parasite is large enough to be visible to the naked eye. So you can quickly identify the bug and take precautions to prevent dandruff. Scabies is another parasite that causes severe skin irritation and itchiness. This leads to extensive dandruff that results in hair loss, pimples, and much more. Demodex is also a bug that causes dandruff with similar symptoms, including lesions. Allergies Like humans, your loyal pets can also suffer from a variety of allergies caused due to the environment. They may also be related to food or because of bugs such as fleas. Some products are also irritant to Golden Retrievers resulting in an allergy. Some Golden Retrievers experience allergies during hot atmospheres, while others are susceptible to cold environments. Besides that, different pollens also affect dogs. Typically, an allergy can cause various issues, including dandruff. For instance, your dog may experience severe itchiness. Additionally, they can suffer from skin irritation, redness, infections, and other symptoms. Skin Infections Bacteria and fungi are two primary microorganisms that cause infections in humans. Unfortunately, dogs also experience such issues because of these microbodies. You should note that you cannot see these organisms with the naked eye. So it may be tough to identify them as the dandruff cause. Your Golden Retriever can host these organisms on its body after swimming. The microbes may also affect your pet if their fur is dirty or has an untreated wound. Ringworm is the most prevalent fungus that infects dogs and causes flakey skin. This eventually leads to dandruff. Hormonal Disorders Hormonal disorders in dogs are also referred to as endocrine disorders. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which your dog is not making adequate thyroid hormone. This leads to various symptoms which cause dandruff. The top way you can identify this dandruff cause is by checking for dry and flakey skin. Additionally, a thin hair coat is a prevalent sign. Poor Diet The nutrients your Golden Retriever consumes directly affect its health and hygiene. If your dog is not taking the right items, it will have dull and flakey skin. Not only that, but its haircoat will be dry and unhealthy. Besides that, your pet will also have unhealthy skin, which will be easily noticeable. Dandruff because of poor diet may happen due to low-quality dog food products. For example, the item may not contain Vitamin E or omega-3 fatty acids. Immune-Mediated Diseases These are diseases that are caused by an autoimmune disorder in your pet. Typically, the dog's body destroys the healthy skin cells or sebaceous glands which produce oil. This will result in low or excessive oil production, which causes dandruff. The diseases also cause disturbance in the different skin layers affecting oil production. They can also cause internal wounds through inflammation and other injuries. You can use these signs to diagnose this dandruff cause. Treatments Here are the top dandruff treatments that will allow you to help your Golden Retriever: Take Your Pet To A Vet One of the best things you can do for your dog is taking them to the veterinarian for a checkup. The vet will run some skin tests and biopsies to determine if a medical issue is causing dandruff. If the physician identifies a medical condition, they will prescribe suitable medications to assist you. Sometimes, the vet also provides supplements to help tackle dandruff. This is why you can effectively treat your pet with ease. Another benefit of taking your pet to a physician is that they also help with non-medical issues. For instance, the vet may suggest you an excellent dog food product if a poor diet is the dandruff cause of your pet. Regular Brushing Grooming and bathing techniques play an effective role in tackling Golden Retriever dandruff issues. As a result, the dog can battle infections with more ease. Brushing your dog every day a few times will also allow you to improve natural oil distribution across the haircoat. Additionally, the blood circulation of your pet will also enhance. This helps prevent dandruff from occurring in the first place. Besides that, brushing will also allow you to notice dandruff quickly. So you can take other precautions within the correct time window. Thus, your chance of treating dandruff will be higher. Diet Improvement As we said earlier, poor diet is one of the leading causes of dandruff in Golden Retrievers. This is why you should consider changing the food products you are using. Typically, you should search for a high-quality item rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. You should also ensure that the food product has other essential nutrients in the right quantities. For example, vitamin E is one of the ingredients that must be present in dog food. Apart from that, you should also provide your dog with adequate fresh water daily. Regular Bathing Bathing is as important as brushing your dog regularly. The only difference is that you don't have to wash your pet daily. Typically, a bath every three weeks is suitable for maintaining good hygiene. You should also wash your pet immediately if they become dirty. Keep in mind not to bathe your dog every day or excessively. This is because it will lead to dry skin. Bathing frequently also rids your pet's skin with the natural oils it requires. That is why it is essential to follow a strict routine. Special Shampoo A dog is one of the most prevalent animals that people keep as pets. So you will find many care products for them in the market. That is why it is advisable to get a special shampoo for your Golden Retriever. An excellent shampoo for golden retrievers with the right ingredients will target skin irritation and itchiness issues. As a result, the risk of your pet becoming affected by dandruff reduces significantly. The best thing about some shampoos is that they also help in treating fungal infections. Use A Humidifier Environmental factors also play an integral role in causing dandruff in Golden Retrievers. Dry air may take away the essential oils from your pet's skin and cause it to become flakey. This can cause irritation and itchiness, which results in dandruff. You can tackle dry air issues by using a humidifier in your home. It is best to put the device in a room where your pet stays frequently. The device will maintain the right atmosphere that will tackle the flakiness. Hence, you can ensure that your dog will never have dandruff because of dry air. Dandruff Spray If you have been to a dog pet shop, you must have seen dandruff sprays on the shelves. They can help you eliminate dandruff effectively in most cases. However, note that many sprays contain alcohol which can worsen the issue. The best way to get a dandruff spray is by visiting a vet for the suggestion. They will guide you to the right product you should purchase. Additionally, they may help you get rid of dandruff with an alternative but equally effective method. It is advisable to add equal parts of water to the oil and use it for rinsing your dog. Once the time has passed, you should wash the Golden Retriever and then shampoo. Keep in mind not to use this remedy more than once every week. Olive Oil This is another home product that helps with dandruff issues. It is an excellent and safe moisturizer. Lime Juice Vitamin C is one of the nutrients that allow you to tackle dandruff in your Golden Retriever. Fortunately, lime juice is rich in this vitamin and available at your home. As per experts, you should prepare a concoction by adding an equal amount of lime juice to an equal quantity of water. Then, you should rinse your dog with this mixture after shampooing them during a bath. Final Thoughts This is your complete guide to Golden Retrievers' dandruff causes and treatments. Understanding all the primary and secondary reasons will help you diagnose the issue. Meanwhile, all the treatments are effective for eliminating dandruff issues in Golden Retrievers. Not only that, but they are also safe to use as long as you don't overdo some things. More Health. Symptoms: Symptoms that your dog has a skin infections are things like hot spots, red areas, greasy patches, and excessive scratching. Symptoms: These are white mites and they are large enough to be seen with the naked eye quite easily under the right light. However, they may be harder to spot in dogs with lighter coats where the mites can blend in more easily. The contrast with the ink makes it very easy to see their movements. Symptoms: Seborrhea is often accompanied by greasy skin in dogs. This is caused because the grease glands are also overactive. The cause of this condition is still unknown, but certain breeds are particularly prone to seborrhea Golden Retrievers and Labradors are not on this list. If you live in a dry area where the humidity is low or if you keep the heating high most of the time, the air could be the cause. Symptoms: Dry skin makes dogs quite itchy and you will notice them scratching all over their bodies regularly. This can lead to other skin conditions that will need to be treated later. You can check out those 17 practical solutions to your goldens shedding here. Health Conditions Some health conditions can cause skin scaling and dandruff. For example. Under-active glands — known as hypothyroidism — and some auto-immune conditions. Symptoms: Your dog will show the symptoms of these diseases, in which case they must be taken to the vet, of course. View Larger Image Ichthyosis in golden retrievers Excessive scale or dandruff flakes Several breeds of dog, notably the Golden Retriever, Jack Russell Terrier and Bulldog, can be affected by excessive flaking of the skin. This is present from birth, but may be very mild, so is not noticed until later in life. The belly may also have darkly pigmented, dry skin. It does not tend to be itchy unless there is also infection present with bacteria and yeast. The changes in the skin make it easier for infections to take hold. Owners typically notice large flakes of skin present in the fur when brushing their dog, or on the floor in areas where they spend time. Golden Retrievers typically have a very mild form of this disease, whereas other breeds can be more badly affected. How do dogs get Ichthyosis? This disease is inherited and multiple puppies in a litter may have the disease. It has what is called a recessive mode of inheritance, which means that both parents must carry the gene for the puppies to show signs. The parents may have two disease genes and so are scaly themselves or one normal gene and one diseased gene, so they look normal. If the puppies in the litter get one disease gene from each of their parents they will be affected with the scaling disease, which can be seen when you look at them. Alternatively, if they just get one diseased gene and one normal gene, they will look normal but will be at risk of passing the disease on if they have puppies in future. Testing for Ichthyosis? There are many other causes of scaling in dogs, so these should be ruled out by a veterinarian before a diagnosis of ichthyosis is made. In Golden Retrievers there is a genetic test available, which is recommended if you are planning to breed your dog. This will tell you if your dog is a carrier of the disease, even if they look normal. By responsible testing and breeding, this disease can be avoided in future generations of puppies. Results are normally back in weeks. Treatment for Ichthyosis? Treatment is tailored to the needs of each individual dog. The scaling cannot be cured, but in many mild cases can be managed by conscientious bathing and moisturising. In more severe cases oral medication may be needed which can help but not cure the problem. Related Posts.

Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Kentucky? Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Dog Whisperer Hypoallergenic Puppy Shampoo This puppy shampoo uses vitamin E and Pro-V B5, organic aloe vera, and rosemary leaf extract to create a gentle shampoo that also conditions young coats. It also comes with a waterless shampoo that you can use to freshen up your pup between washes if they do manage to get into some dirty trouble. Like with all things, you will need to train your dog in terms of what is expected of them at bath time. The best approach is to use positive reinforcement training. This means showing them what you want, and then rewarding them when they comply. Each time you bathe them they will have a better understanding of what you need from them. Make sure you have a good space prepared before you get started. You might want to set yourself up inside the shower or outside, as they may make quite a bit of water mess. Make sure the water that you use is lukewarm. Not only will this be less of a shock to them, but it also minimizes the problems relating to cold and regulating body temperature. Get them completely wet, maybe pouring water over them using a cup. Then you are ready to add your chosen shampoo. Rub gently without applying too much pressure. While you want to be thorough and get the shampoo everywhere, avoid the eyes and try not to let the shampoo get into their mouth or ears. When you are done, make sure that you rinse thoroughly as shampoo residue can irritate their skin if left behind. If it is not a leave-in conditioner, make sure to rinse thoroughly again with lukewarm water. Before releasing them into the wild, you will want to get them as dry as possible. A good rub down with their own towel is usually enough to do the trick. The sound of the machine is very likely to scare your dog. You can get special dog hair dryers that are designed to make almost no noise, but unless your dog has a particularly long or thick coat, it is probably not necessary. Try to use the same process every time you bathe your dog, and do it in the same place. Your puppy will find reassurance in the routine. If you choose to bathe them somewhere different every time, it will be much harder for them to associate this bath with their previous bath and repeat the behaviors that they learned. If your puppy leads an active, outdoor lifestyle, you might feel like you want to bathe them as often as once a week. This is fine as long as you use an appropriate shampoo and monitor their coat and skin for reactions. You should only bathe them more than once a week in a mud-related emergency. Why do puppies shiver after a bath? Yep, your puppy is shivering after a bath because they are cold. As the water evaporates off their body, it cools them down significantly. Dogs will shake to remove as much water as possible and warm up more quickly, and a nice toweling down can also help. Should you give a puppy a bath when you bring them home? You might be tempted to give your puppy a bath as soon as you bring them home, but this urge is best resisted. Even if they are already of bathing age, it is better to let them settle in for two weeks before giving them a bath. Changing the scent that they are familiar with can make it more difficult for them to adjust to their new home. Plus, bath time can be a little traumatic, so you should wait until they trust you. Is it OK to let your puppy air dry? It is generally not advised to let your puppy air dry as they are likely to roll around in the grass and dirt in order to dry off and remove any shampoo smell. The result might mean that they need another bath. A good toweling down is usually enough to get your dog sufficiently dry. The biggest challenge for many new pet parents is that they are overzealous in wanting to care for their new canine friends, so they start bathing their puppy too soon and too often. Bathing your puppy too soon can put their health at risk and make it harder for them to settle into their new home. You should also wait at least two weeks after bringing them home before bathing them to make it easier for them to adjust. If you want to freshen them up a bit, best to reach for a brush. Now, what are the steps to bathe your Lab puppy? Follow all the steps given below: 1. Get puppy shampoo supplies You can not wash your dog with the basic soap you have at your home. You have to get a special shampoo, only meant for dogs. The reason you can not use human shampoo is the detergent used in it. Those detergents can easily wash away natural protectants and making them vulnerable to several diseases and infections. So instead, go and get a dog shampoo. Along with that, also get a brush, towel, and a dryer if possible. Dog Comb Please make sure you comb their coat significantly. Make sure you do not use hot water or cold water. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and use it to wash your puppy. Be Gentle Some puppies are afraid of water, so never forcefully spray water on puppies. Instead, make it easier on your puppy, and slowly pour the water on them. Also, make sure you do not let the water go inside their ears or eyes. As the ear folds in their ear canal can easily trap the water, which can later lead to several bacteria that can grow on the water. It can lead to ear infections and many other complications. How to prepare the dog bath After pouring lukewarm water over your dog, you can go ahead and prepare the puppy shampoo. You can do this by mixing the soap with water. Now, with the help of a soft sponge in your hands. You can evenly spread that shampoo all over their body and do not let the shampoo go into their eyes. You can use one hand to pour water, and with the other hand, you can cover their eyes and ears so that the water can not get there. If your pet has a thick and dense coat, then I suggest you repeat this process several times. Also, give some treats to your puppy and praise them for cooperating with you. So, next time they might cooperate with you even more to get the reward. How to dry a puppy after a bath After you wash them, your next step is to dry them. Now, you can use the towel and dry them out. You can also use hairdryers if you want to. Tip: Some puppies are not used to the sound of a hairdryer. You do not want your puppy to be burned or to be too cold in the bath. Make sure the bath is comfortable for the dog. A rubber bath mat under the dogs feet will make them comfortable. Sometimes the dogs can slip and hurt themselves during bath time. You must select the correct shampoo for your dog. Use only puppy shampoo on your dog. These shampoos and conditioners are designed for your pup. Human shampoo and dish soap can be too strong for your delicate puppy. Mixed breeds are often mistakenly called hybrids. A hybrid is an animal that was created by mixing two different species. The dog world is wonderfully varied, and there is a breed for everyone no matter how unusual your taste or lifestyle. But are these mixes really breeds? It turns out it takes more than crossing two existing breeds to create a new one. It takes several generations over a period of decades before a new breed is considered uniform enough in looks and temperament to conform to a standard. But for this article, we will continue to call them mixed breeds. But before we move on, a word of caution. Both dogs are intelligent and can be independent and stubborn. Both breeds are also untrustworthy off-leash. And they both need early socialization and firm training, so count on having your hands full. Likely variables: Friendliness. Possibilities: A mix of the two is almost guaranteed to be a challenge because of their independence and stubbornness. All in all, expect this mix to be double trouble! They are both friendly with their families, though the Corgi is less suspicious of strangers. Both breeds are working dogs with a moderate need for exercise. Likely variables: Playfulness and level of interaction. Besides the obvious difference in size, the Corgi can be bold and playful, while the TM finds it hard to let his hair down. But they also have very high guarding instinct and can be aggressive with strangers. Likely variables: Trainability and health concerns. Another gamble: The GSD is prone to many health issues. Possibilities: If you're looking for a family or property protector, this may be a great mix for you. Both the Rottweiler and the TM are good with family members. They are both prone to obesity and can be barkers. And be forewarned: These breeds are both heavy shedders. Likely variables: Obedience and energy level. The Rottie is less independent and more trainable than the TM. The Rottie also has a higher energy level and does best with a job to do or a canine sport. Possibilities: This mix could create a more obedient Tibetan Mastiff or a lower-energy Rottweiler. These are two enormous dogs with aggressive tendencies. Neither is considered an appropriate choice for an inexperienced dog owner. Both require early socialization and firm training. Likely variables: Aggression level. The gamble here is likely to be mostly the degree of aggression in the puppies. The TM is easier to train to tame the aggression, but the CS is more challenging. He is less friendly to other pets and strangers and can be fierce when he feels threatened. Possibilities: This crossbreed would probably make an ideal guard dog. The Great Dane GD weighs up to pounds with a height of up to 34 inches. Both breeds are gentle and friendly with family and can be sweet and devoted. Likely variables: Separation anxiety and aggression level. The GD is known as a gentle and reserved giant who can be prone to separation anxiety. Some lines can be more aggressive, however. If you pair an aggressive GD with the super-protective TM, the puppies are likely to need extra-firm and early training. Possibilities: This mix could make a nice family dog. Both the Saint Bernard and the TM are gentle, attentive, and loving to family. They are both thick-coated breeds that have a high tolerance for cold. Likely variables: Stranger reaction and drooling. The Saint Bernard is as friendly to strangers as he is to family. The TM, not so much. Either way, this cross would probably make a nice family dog. Both the Labrador Retriever and the TM are gentle, intelligent, and family-friendly breeds. However, both are also prone to obesity. Likely variables: These two breeds have more differences than similarities. The Lab adds energy level, exercise needs, stranger friendliness, and prey drive to the mix. He also has a high energy level and needs an active job to do, preferably hunting. Sadly, the Lab also has a relatively large number of health issues. Chances are good, though, that they would be good family dogs. The Golden Retriever and the TM are gentle, intelligent, family-friendly dogs. Both are heavy shedders. Likely variables: Energy level, need for mental stimulation , obedience levels, separation anxiety tendency, stranger wariness, health concerns. The Golden is a moderately high-energy, athletic dog who needs to be busy. He also needs to be with his people and is prone to separation anxiety. The Golden is easier to train than the TM and is eager to please. He is generally friendly to everyone. This mix could produce a more energetic TM. However, it could also work the other way and result in a less exuberant, more stranger-wary Golden. Either way, this mix would probably make a great dog for an active family. Though the Great Pyrenees GP is smaller than the TM by about 10 pounds and 6 inches, he is also considered a giant breed. The two breeds are known for being challenging to train and are not recommended for inexperienced dog owners. Likely variables: Level of aggression, overall friendliness. Possibilities: This mix would probably create a good guard dog for a home without children. The Alaskan Malamute and TM are both loyal, friendly, and gentle with kids. They are both intelligent working dogs that can be stubborn and challenging to train. Likely variables: Exercise needs, playfulness, aggression levels including food aggression , prey drive, howling. The AM could add a host of challenging behaviors to the pot. They are known to need very firm training and discipline from the beginning. Possibilities: A mix of these two dogs will almost certainly be a handful because of their stubborn natures. This is also a cross that you would not want to bring into a home with other pets. The Chow Chow is even more likely to be aggressive than the TM. Likely variables: Devotion, trainability, dominance. The Chow can be intensely loyal, but he is a one-person dog. He is exceptionally strong-willed and is not known for obedience. He believes he should be the boss and needs strict training. Possibilities: This mix would very likely result in a dog with a high level of aggression that is difficult to tame. We do not recommend this Tibetan Mastiff mix breed for families with young children. Both have aggressive tendencies, and the Chow Chow is known to bite when provoked or annoyed. Both breeds need very firm training and socialization. Likely variables: Devotion, dominance, aggression. When crossed with a TM, the Akita ups the ante when it comes to devotion and loyalty. He also tends toward aggression with strangers. Possibilities: This is another mix that would likely be dangerously overprotective. It would probably be best suited to a single-pet home. Likely variables: Disposition, dominance, separation anxiety, exercise need, drooling. The BMD brings a sweet, soft disposition to this pairing. He has a high energy level, though, and is prone to separation anxiety. He also has dominance tendencies and needs proper early training and socialization. Possibilities: This mix would be like crossing a bear with a lion, and it may be just as frightening because of size alone. While the cross could create a loving family dog, it would probably be challenging to train with a stubborn nature and possible dominance issues. The Newfoundland can grow to be pounds and 28 inches. Not the most massive combination on this list, but close! The Newf has slightly less energy, but both breeds need moderate exercise. Likely variables: Soft disposition, obedience, stranger friendliness. What does this breed bring to the table in the game of designer dog breeding? The most distinguishing feature of the Tibetan Mastiff is his size. A male can grow to a weight of pounds and a height of 30 inches tall. When he stands on his hind legs, he is often as tall as a human. Females can be as large as pounds and 28 inches. Despite his size, though, the Tibetan Mastiff tends to have a gentle and sensitive disposition—most of the time. He needs a lot of socialization to compensate for his guarding instinct. That guarding instinct can be problematic in homes with young children. The Tibetan Mastiff also has a very independent nature and can be stubborn. For these reasons, the Tibetan Mastiff or Tibetan Mastiff mix breed is not the best choice for every family. The Tibetan Mastiff can be aggressive toward strangers and children he doesn't know. Also, check out our article on the cost of the Tibetan Mastiff A Word About Mixed-Breed Temperament Predicting temperament in a mixed breed is trickier than with a purebred. When you cross two breeds, you can generally expect that the puppies will have some traits from each parent. But the ratio can be completely different in each pup. One may look exactly like one parent, one may favor the other parent more, and still others may be nearly perfect blends of both. The same goes for temperament. Adorable Tibetan Mastiff Puppy To complicate the issue still more, the parents may be second-generation mixes. All of this means that there will be a lot of individual difference in a crossbreed, making temperament harder to predict. As we discuss the Tibetan Mastiff mix breeds below, we mention similarities of the two breeds being crossed. We then talk about temperament traits that are different in the two breeds. These are the traits that are likely to be most variable in a mix. They can offer some guidance as to possibilities but only in a broad sense. But predicting temperament in mixed breeds is a crapshoot. For more information on evaluating mixed-breed temperament, please see our Guide to a Successful Dog Relationship. Takeaways In the world of designer dogs, the massive Tibetan Mastiff makes for some fascinating Tibetan Mastiff mix breeds. All Tibetan Mastiffs need early socialization and firm training. When they are mixed with other giant breeds, with or without aggression, meeting those needs will be even more critical. Calvin L. Although this cross is usually hardy and long-lived, they do have certain diseases that owners should be aware of. It is a congenital disease caused by irregularities in the joint of the hip. It can involve both genetics and environmental factors, and symptoms range from mild lameness to severe movement problems. If caught early enough, Hip Dysplasia can be treated with surgery and targeted therapies. Another potentially serious condition that can occur in Do Khyi German Shepherd mixes is total loss of hearing. This is very annoying and cannot be treated, but preventative measures such as ear cleaning and regular veterinary examinations can help minimize the chances of such serious conditions occurring. Due to their mixed ancestry, Do Khyi German Shepherd Mix dogs may also be prone to developing metabolic problems. Owners should therefore be careful to provide their pet with a diet of healthy nutrients and consider giving vitamins and minerals on a regular basis. Immune deficiencies, allergies and autoimmune diseases can also be common in Do Khyi German Shepherd Mix dogs and should be diagnosed and treated early. In conclusion, owners should remember that Do Khyi German Shepherd Mix dogs are just as susceptible to parasites and infections as other breeds. Therefore, owners should regularly check their pet for parasites and make sure they get timely vaccinations. With good care and regular veterinary checkups, Do Khyi German Shepherd mix dogs can live long and healthy lives. What does this mixed breed look like? A Tibetan Dog and German Shepherd mixed breed usually has a thick, long-haired coat. It is usually black and brown, although the colors can vary from dark brown to light brown. Some reach a creamy tone or even white. The coat has a thick undercoat that helps them stay warm on cooler days, but they need to be brushed regularly to avoid matting. Other coat characteristics that some of these dogs possess include a tail that is often curly, and bushy ears and eyebrows. This breed has a robust body, is very active and has a very strong instinct, which makes them loyal and loving companions. Fur length. Due to the wide variety of mastiffs, their appearance can vary considerably from one adult mixture of German shepherds to another. Like other designer dogs, they often combine the most desirable traits of two breeds that do not seem to have much in common. If you are lucky enough to win the Mastiff Shepherd, you need to establish control early on and focus heavily on socialization and training. Due to the wide variety of mastiffs, their appearance can vary widely from German Shepherd mastiff blend to each other. There are many different types of mastiffs, but the variation that people most associate with the German Shepherd mix is the mastiff with English roots. Many of them also died. Breed resurrection includes one surviving female and about 15 dogs. Historically, the German Shepherd Mastiff Mix has served as a wild hunting dog, the wild boar, and the guard dog on the farm. They also wage wars, fatten bulls, participate in fighting dogs, and protect livestock at various stages of evolution. German Shepherd Mastiff Mix Appearance: Their appearance depends on the type of mastiff used in the development process. These dogs are generally loyal and devoted in nature and are mostly excellent at being the perfect companion to pets. The German Shepherd Mastiff Mix is a large and heavy variation of the standard German Shepherd like black german shepherd mastiff mix. It also shares some exterior features with Tibetan Mastiff. The color of their coats varies between shades of red, brown and black. The eyes are almost black and there are sparks of joy. Standard features typically include a wide belly, large legs, and a wide, sturdy nose with folded ears. German Shepherd Mastiff Mix blend sizes can vary considerably, so you can expect Mastiff Shepherd lengths to be 0. German Shepherd English Mastiff Blends tend to be measured on the larger and heavier side. Depending on the mastiff variety, the color of the mastiff shepherd coat is expected to vary between red, black, brown and gray. Brindle coat color is also available. German Shepherd Mastiff Mix coats are usually thick, but medium length short. Tibetan Mastiff mixed with German Shepherd varieties generally has the longest coat. However, keep in mind that Mastiff Shepherds are regular shepherds and require regular coat care. It is helpful to have a vacuum cleaner to clean loose fur. To take care of the Mastiff Shepherd, you usually need a more polished brush under the rake and metal comb. Use a long stroke to straighten the coat and prepare this dog to be groomed times a week. However, due to genetics, this dog can be cumbersome and overweight if not exercised regularly. Expect to walk for at least minutes daily to keep the mastiff supple and healthy. A moderate intensity exercise of hours is an ideal time to devote yourself to the exercise and play of the Mastiff Shepherd. By exercising daily, the German Shepherd Mastiff Mix joints turn into greater bendy and stronger, and you will be able to hold substantial weight. Many of them will also work for some military operations, drug detection, physical support, and search and rescue. Ideally, you should always split your workout into at least two intervals per day. The personality of the German Shepherd Mastiff Mix can be compared to the personality of a stubborn and gentle giant. In this section you will learn how to get better ideas on how you can expect a Mastiff Shepherd performance. Mastiff Shepherds are loyal and highly protective of their owners, and in the worst case can appear indifferent or hostile to strangers. They are the family of two historically known parents of their parents. This means that little training is required to become a lookout dog or guardian. But with proper training and sociability, the Mastiff Shepherd can be a great companion to a small or large home. Gentle : Early interaction with German Shepherd Mastiff Mix puppies is important for quick training in aggressive behavior. But overall, the Mastiff Shepherd is a very gentle dog, relatively calm and can be left unattended by children. German shepherds and mastiffs have different personalities, and their mixtures can represent two types of unpredictable mixtures. Guard Potential : The German Shepherd Mastiff Mix has shown the protection of herds from the first day of work to homes and families. Our German Mastiff needs to be kind to strangers or a little further away. She will remain relaxed as long as she experiences a heartfelt relationship between you and your guests. It has an intimidating, fiercely threatening position, but your mixture is unlikely to bite. They are usually very effective guard dogs. Occasionally people make good guard dogs, but you can train most of them for some kind of conservation work. Make friends with other dogs : The kindness of Mastiff extends to other animals and children. A highly social German Shepherd Mastiff Mix can make friends with other dogs and cats. However, if you have a large size, you should always monitor small pets and toddlers. German shepherds easily learn that children and other animals in the house deserve their protection. They are tolerant and tend to be friendly even to young children. However, German shepherds do not always show kindness to people outside the family, often showing aggression against other dogs and suspicion of foreign children. Some have a strong urge to chase moving objects. Watch your shepherd mix with other animals and children until you can determine that they are ready. If you supervise kids and dogs in your home, most will be fine. Information about German Shepherd Mastiff Mixture: German shepherds and mastiffs are moderate shepherds all year round, and their mix does not change much. German Shepherd Mastiff Mix are fine in cold weather, as long as they are below 30 degrees Fahrenheit for long periods of time, like mastiffs and shepherds. Due to its short nose and large size, some mastiffs can be heat sensitive. Mastiff only needs weekly brushing work, while German Shepherd needs to brush four times a week. The Shepherd Mastiff Blend has a moderately dense double layer that can have edges and wrinkles. She will probably brush a couple of times a week and ask you to shake off the foundation every day. Most problems are due to the large size of the hybrid. Joint problems : Hip and elbow dysplasia is the most popular mastiff shepherd joint problem you can expect. These joint problems generally affect large dogs. Lack of exercise and a poor diet can worsen joints and adversely affect the quality of life of German Shepherd Mastiff Mix. The weight of the German Shepherd Mastiff mix is an important factor influencing the severity and development of joint problems. Mastiff shepherds are more and more susceptible to these problems. Cherry eye While not always a painful health concern for German Shepherd Mastiff Mix, candle eyes are ugly and not aesthetically pleasing. In severe cases, they can experience irritation, swelling, irritation, and dryness in the affected eye, which can lead to illness. This health problem is asymptomatic and usually shows no signs before arrival. Swelling digestive problems : Flatulence is a digestive problem known to German Shepherd Mastiff Mix. The problem of swelling can also lead to malnutrition and sudden and unexpected death if left untreated. Otherwise, your dog can quickly become overweight. Being overweight can cause joint and hip problems. All dogs need a complete diet full of vitamins, minerals and protein to stay healthy and alive. A constant supply of freshwater Post navigation. Coat Both the Tibetan Mastiff and the German Shepherd are double-coated breeds who shed year-round and blow their coats twice a year. Although it is no secret that German Shepherds are heavy shedders during shedding season, the Tibetan Mastiff has them beat! Since the Tibetan Mastiff has a heavier coat of wooly fluffy slightly longer hair than the GSD, shedding season will be more fur filled. Accordingly, a mix between these breeds will also result in a breed that sheds significantly every spring and fall when they blow their coat. As far as coat coloring, German Shepherds come many color varieties such as black and tan, liver , sable, blue , and all black. Since there are many color options for both breeds, the coloring of a mix will depend mostly on which parent the pup takes after. Grooming The grooming needs of both of these breeds are similar, thus the grooming needs of a GSD Tibetan Mastiff mix would be the same as well. Outside of shedding season, your dog should be brushed once weekly. However, doing the shedding season you will need to brush them two or three times weekly and vacuum your home or apartment regularly as well. Unless they get unexpectantly dirty, you can expect to bathe your mutt about every 6 -8 weeks. Nail trimming and teeth cleaning requirements are the same as with any dog. If your pup takes after their Tibetan Mastiff parent and has floppy ears as opposed to the erect ears of the German Shepherd , you need to make sure to keep their ears dry and cleaned more often as floppy-eared dogs can be more prone to ear infections. Strength There is no doubt that a German Shepherd Tibetan Mastiff mix will be an incredibly strong dog because of their muscle mass and size. They will also have an incredibly strong bite force. Although it is hard to pinpoint exactly, a mix between these breeds will create a dog with an incredibly powerful bite force being at least psi in most cases. Speed German Shepherds can run at top speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, whereas the Tibetan Mastiff is a little slower because of its size at top speeds of 20 miles per hour. Thus, a cross between these breeds would likely yield a mix that runs at a top speed of around 25 miles per hour. Exercise Requirement German Shepherds are very high energy and thus need more exercise to keep them from destroying things and getting bored. German Shepherds need on average a minimum of an hour of physical activity each day. Thus, the Tibetan Mastiff German Shepherd mix should need on average around 45 minutes a day. However, keep in mind that this can vary between individual dogs. A mix that takes more after their GSD parent and has more energy will require more exercise daily as well as more mental stimulation. Trainability The trainability of this mix will greatly depend on whether they take more after their GSD parent or the TM parent. The German Shepherd Dog is a breed that is very easy to train and ranked as 3rd most intelligent dog breed. The Tibetan Mastiff is also very intelligent, but slightly stubborn as well. Thus, sometimes they prefer to do what they want to do opposed to what you are asking them to do, making them more difficult to train. A mix between these breeds will likely create a dog that although intelligent could be a little more difficult to train especially if the dog takes more after their Tibetan Mastiff parent. They will need a strong leader and positive reinforcement training for the best results. Temperament The German Shepherd Tibetan Mastiff mix will be a confident, intelligent, protective dog that enjoys spending time with their family. They will be eager to please their humans, but also have their own ideas sometimes as to what they think is right. Although this mix will be a great family companion, they will be leery of strangers from outside their circle. They can be good with kids, but because of their size they should be monitored around babies and toddlers and taught to be gentle. This mix will also be good around other pets if properly socialized from an early age. Other issues this cross bread could face are hypothyroidism, eye anomalies, ear infections, bloat, pancreatitis, and other digestive-related issues. Lifespan The Tibetan Mastiff has a lifespan of between 10 — 12 years, whereas the German Shepherd has a lifespan of between 12 — 14 years. The Tibetan Mastiff German Shepherd mix will have a lifespan that is an average of the two breeds usually being around 12 years. Other factors that will determine the lifespan of your mix will be the type of lifestyle they live. Doing things like making sure they get regular exercise, feed them a quality diet, and keep them going to the vet regularly will greatly increase the chances of your pup living a long healthy life. How Popular is the German Shepherd Tibetan Mastiff Mix The German Shepherd Tibetan Mastiff mix is not as popular as some other mixed breeds, thus is can be harder to find a breeder who specializes in this particular mix. Usually, this mix comes about as a result of accidental mating and can more commonly be found as available for adoption at local animal shelters. Breeders who do specialize in this mix are likely trying to create the ultimate guard dog qualities found in the Tibetan Mastiff while maintaining the fun, eager to please personality of German Shepherds. Final Thoughts The German Shepherd Tibetan Mastiff mix is a very large dog that is intelligent, loving, and protective over their family. They will require a strong leader as they can be stubborn, but with socialization and training can be excellent family companions. Some basic measures that you can take are feeding from a bowl on the ground instead of one elevated on a stand, and feeding at least 2 meals per day. However, the most effective way to deal with bloat is through surgical prevention called a prophylactic gastropexy. A prophylactic gastropexy is a procedure during which the stomach is anchored to the interior of the body wall. This prevents the stomach from rotating on itself when it gets distended. It is best to have this procedure performed when a dog is a puppy at the time that they are spayed or neutered. However, in bigger dogs that have already been altered, a laparoscopic procedure is also a viable option. Joint Problems The most common joint problems present in Mastiff Shepherds are hip and elbow dysplasia. Generally speaking, the heavier the dog, the more prone to joint problems they are. Symptoms of hip and elbow dysplasia include: expressing pain by yelping or hesitation when trying to sit down aversion to exercise unprovoked aggressive behavior weakness in hind or front legs Hip and elbow dysplasia are degenerative issues that will worsen with time. However, there are a few things that you can do to lessen the likelihood that your Mastiff Shepherd will have to deal with these issues. Exercising your dog regularly and feeding him a proper diet will go a long way towards prevention, as it keeps muscles firm and overall health in check. Additionally, watch where you exercise your dog. Ideally, all running should be done only on soft grass or sand when possible. Skin Conditions In addition to the potential health issues above, Mastiff Shepherds are also prone to skin conditions. This is due to the folds around their neck and face. The most common skin conditions are bacterial infections, fungal infections, parasites, and cysts. Urinary Tract Infections Cystinuria is a somewhat common medical condition in Tibetan Mastiffs, and this sometimes presents itself in Mastiff Shepherds. In cystinuria , the kidneys fail to reabsorb amino acids, and this results in cystine crystals and occasionally stones in the urine. These stones, in turn, can block the urethra. Cystinuria can be treated primarily in one of two ways. Depending on the nature and severity, either non-surgical removal urohydropropulsion or surgical removal may be necessary. The larger the stone, the more likely it is that surgical intervention will be necessary. Epilepsy Epilepsy is a serious concern with Tibetan Mastiffs. In Mastiffs, this is a very difficult condition to treat. It is not uncommon for a Tibetan Mastiff that has epilepsy to die by the age of 3. Although epilepsy is not as common of an occurrence in Mastiff Shepherds as it is in purebred Tibetan Mastiffs, it does still happen. Potential owners should be aware that a risk factor for epilepsy does exist in Mastiff Shepherds. However, with intelligence often comes stubbornness. Stubbornness is much more prevalent on the Tibetan Mastiff side of this mix. This can make training this mixed breed a bit of a challenge, and not one that we recommend for the novice or first-time dog owner. We advocate training all dogs through positive reinforcement, and we suggest no different for this breed. Training a dog, especially a Mastiff, through any negative or punitive approach will almost certainly backfire, as they are stubborn and easily frustrated. Any negative approach is likely to lead to a dog that is simply unwilling to learn. A large, potentially aggressive dog combined with an unwillingness to learn can be a dangerous combination. This mix also requires an authoritative leader when it comes to training. However, with this leadership comes responsibility. It is your job to establish yourself as a kind leader who can be trusted, admired, and followed. Anything less than this and your dog will not trust you, and therefore he will not listen to you. If you are thinking of acquiring a Mastiff Shepherd, then it is very important that you consider getting one when it is a puppy, as this will provide you with the greatest chance for effective and long-lasting obedience when trained properly. This is not to suggest that an older Mastiff Shepherd mix cannot be trained, it will, however, certainly present more of a challenge. In the instance of an older Mastiff Shepherd mix, you will almost certainly want to enlist the help of a seasoned dog trainer. Temperament As we have established, both German Shepherds and Tibetan Mastiffs are highly protective breeds, and they will not hesitate to protect their owners at any cost. As a mix, if this dog suspects a threat, he will not think twice to place himself between his owner and the threat. This bold and fearless characteristic, however, does not mean that a Mastiff Shepherd is not a gentle dog by any means. In fact, these mixes are likely more gentle than you may think. As long as these dogs have been properly socialized and well-trained, many owners find that there is little reason for concern when leaving them unattended in the presence of other pets of all kinds as well. Even the best dogs can turn into less than desirable pets when this process is not properly followed. In contrast, the worst behaved of dogs can be completely turned around through proper training and socialization. However, it is especially important with this breed that you do not confuse quantity with quality. Because these dogs are so large and are prone to the health issues, as we have discussed above, feeding them a proper and well-balanced diet is essential for them to live a healthy life. Exactly how much food your Mastiff Shepherd will consume will vary widely in accordance with the size of the dog and how much exercise that he is getting on a daily basis. At any rate, you can plan on feeding this dog between cups of a high-quality, well balanced food per day. It is also crucial for this mixed breed that you never feed them too much food in one sitting. Doing so can cause GDV, as we have described above. Additionally, you should avoid providing food or water within an hour before or after rigorous exercise. Doing so will greatly decrease the chances that your this dog will have to contend with GDV. The best way to determine just how much food that your Mastiff Shepherd may need is through a visual and physical inspection of the dog. Follow these simple steps to give you a good idea on how to proceed with feeding quantities. View your dog from above — you should be able to see a waist without any extra bulge obscuring it. Then run your hands from shoulder to rear, keeping your hands over the ribs and your thumbs on either side of the spine. In a properly fed dog, you will feel some ribs with just gentle pressure being applied. If the ribs are too pronounced and can be seen, then the dog needs more food. If you cannot feel the ribs, then you should cut back on food and increase the amount of daily exercise. Once again, we find it worth repeating that quantity and quality are two very different things when it comes to nutrition for this mixed breed. It is well worth it to spend the extra money on a high quality food over a more inexpensive brand. Whichever route you choose to take, the results will make themselves apparent over time. Exercise Requirements Keep in mind that this breed does not like to undergo strenuous and lengthy runs. A German Shepherd is fully capable of this, but a Tibetan Mastiff — not so much! Mastiff Shepherds are prone to exhaustion if exercised too strenuously, and will remain in much better health when gently exercised regularly in contrast to infrequent, short-term and intense exercise. This mixed breed will benefit the most by being walked 3 times per day, for about 20 minutes on each walk. The exercise requirements of a German Shepherd are slightly higher, but when a Tibetan Mastiff is brought into the mix, the requirements decrease. Also keep in mind that a Mastiff Shepherd is very sensitive to heat. Because of their long and thick coats, this mixed breed will succumb to hot weather in a short amount of time. Keep this in mind when exercising these dogs. If the weather is above 75 degrees, then cut down on the length of time that you walk a Mastiff Shepherd. Additionally, keep an eye on the amount of water that you provide. Cost The average cost of a Tibetan Mastiff German Shepherd mix varies from state to state, and within different regions of each state. There is no set standard price for this breed. Long-term expenses for a Mastiff Shepherd can become very pricey as well. A Mastiff Shepherd will on average cost more in medical bills than other breeds because of the number of potential health problems that they are prone to. Even it is a false alarm, it is best to play it safe and alert your veterinarian immediately if you suspect any medical issues. Additionally, because they are relatively rare, it is highly uncommon to find this mixed breed available from a shelter. Thus, finding a breeder will most likely be the course of action should you choose to acquire one of these dogs. The actual cost will be dependent on your own personality, financial means, and how much you enjoy spoiling your dog! It is important, however, to understand that you should not purchase one of these dogs unless you are ready for a significant, long-term financial commitment. They are powerful, loyal, and beautiful creatures, though they are not for everyone. Owning a Mastiff Shepherd is a significant undertaking of time and money, and it should be viewed as a life change. This is because your life will change in many ways, in many of the same ways as if you were to bring a child into your home Are they worth it? Most definitely, provided that you are up to the task. But what does the right owner look like? Is your house large enough to accommodate a big dog? Do you have the time and resources needed to care for this particular mix? Are you ready to face the potential health issues large breeds like this are prone to? These are important things to ask yourself. As an Amazon Associate I earn a small payment from qualifying purchases but these are all items from my shopping history and I often show in stories. Follow the sign up process, I would suggest listing 20 pounds as the adult weight and check puppy for the age. I believe it will tell you your dog will eat 4 pounds per week. After you get your intro offer you can change the cadence, the default seems to be every 5 weeks. You can also change between organic and value. You can do the entire process on the phone or sign up online and then call them at .I buy poop bags from Amazon and typically get at once because it is so much cheaper than places like Mud Bay. Another potty training tip is that I recommend not letting them have access to too large of an area at a time. I would suggest a baby gate — I like these extra tall walk through gates because they just make life easier. Just an example, if you hang in your living room in the evenings then start by just letting your pup have access to the living room and not the entire house. Small is good, it is comforting and keeps puppy from going potty in their crate. What I like about this style is that they can see everything happening but if you that is too much stimulation and you need to you cover it I suggest something light like a sheet or pillow case, nothing heavy because they get hot. I also send my families home with a snuggle puppy which helps comfort them while they are in the crate and reminds them of snuggling wit their siblings. I know there are some knockoff brands on Amazon but check out the reviews, they seem to have issues with the battery operated heartbeat. For some brands an XS harness is for a 5 pound dog. If you get a puppy from me, I use a comb on my puppies to desensitize them and I also put an electric toothbrush on their feet to get them used to having their feet touched. Here are the tools that I use. My groomer recommended starting with a slicker brush as the first step to combing your dog. After you use the brush you can move to combing them out. I have about 4 of these combs and they are my favorite because you can get all the way to their skin and not just brush the ends of their hair. If there is a mat I need to cut through I have one of these de-matting combs. They are shipped for a dominant right hand but it was easy enough to switch — one side is very sharp so again be careful — watch your fingers butalso be careful combing out your dog with this item. I blow the coat completely dry and with one hand on the dryer and the other on the comb using the dryer makes the comb move through their coat so easily. You are going to go home with some toys but puppies will be teething so they are going to want to chew A LOT. I recommend you have a generous supply of toys! Squeaky toys, stuffed toys, hard toys, and chewy toys! This is important for your puppy, and will make life better for them and you! I do not recommend buying rawhide because I feel it is not a digestible, safe product for dogs but that is just my opinion and stores continue to sell — just do some research. Puppies need supervision with toys and they have a better experience if you actually play with them. They love puzzles and they come in different levels — 8 week old puppies can start with level 1. BEDS: Your puppy is usually going to want to chew up and destroy even their dog bed. The truth is they are absolutely fine sleeping on the hard floor, they do not require a soft bed to feel comfortable. A lot of times a dog bed can make your puppy feel hot. I use freeze dried raw dog food for treats. The product is a little higher price for me to feed multiple dogs as their meal but the love it for treats and the small size is perfect. Our favorite brands are Vital Essentials — I have purchased the mini nibs in duck, rabbit, salmon, beef as well as their minnows.
