Jan 20, Share Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States. They are known for their loyal and friendly personalities, and many people choose them as their first dogs. Such a popular breed is always in demand, and more Golden Retriever puppies are born every day. However, there is some uncertainty about how many puppies Golden Retrievers typically have. Due to their size, larger dogs tend to have larger litters, while smaller dogs tend to have smaller litters. As a bigger dog breed, Goldens can have anywhere from one to twelve puppies per litter, but six to eight puppies are about average. Some litters may have as few as four. Read on below to find out more. Why the Size of the Dog Breed Affects Litter Size The different sizes of litter between breeds are due to the fact that larger breeds have more room in their uterus to grow puppies, while smaller breeds have less room. This is likely due, in part, to the fact that smaller dogs have a shorter gestational period and thus less time to mature a large number of offspring at a more rapid rate than larger dogs. This difference in litter size can be important for breeders, as they need to consider the size of the breed when planning how many puppies to produce. However, it is also worth noting that different breeds of dogs will exhibit different average litter sizes, even within the same size class. For example, the German Shorthaired Pointer is around the same size as a Golden Retriever, but has an average of nine pups per litter. The first litter of puppies for a female Golden Retriever is typically smaller in size than later litters. Additionally, since the first litter is typically born earlier than later litters, the puppies may not have as much time to grow and develop before being born. She should, however, have regular checkups with a veterinarian to ensure everything is going well. Despite Golden Retriever mothers being able to deliver many puppies, not every pup will survive birth. A dam may give birth to four puppies, but only two or three will survive. Pregnant dogs require high-quality vitamins, minerals, and premium proteins in addition to a healthy and balanced diet. Additives and fillers in dog food can lead to poor nutrition and ultimately affect litter size. In addition, diet plays an important role in the health and survival rate of puppies after birth. The chances of a Golden Retriever producing a small litter are higher if they are unhealthy. It is also possible that the puppies are born weak and have a lower chance of surviving. Age of Parents Female Golden Retrievers should not be bred too young or too old. Ideally, a female should be between the ages of 2 and 5 when she is first bred. It is also important to consider the age of the male. Once a male reaches the age of 5, their sperm count will decrease. Image Credit: Chendongshan, Shutterstock Lineage Overly inbred dogs are less likely to have large litters than dogs with a diverse gene pool. Ask your breeder about their parents and whether they have been tested for defects if you are looking for a puppy. Conception Method and Timing It may surprise you to learn that the way your Golden becomes impregnated may determine how many puppies she will have. Having a larger litter is more likely for Golden Retrievers that become pregnant naturally while conceiving artificially is more likely to lead to a smaller litter. This is because the freezing process kills many sperm cells in preserved semen, resulting in fewer pups. Dogs that conceive within 48 hours of ovulation have a higher chance of having a larger litter. These larger litters usually occur in the third, fourth, and fifth pregnancy. Puppy Mills Puppy mills are commercial breeding facilities that mass-produce puppies for sale to the public. In a puppy mill, the mother dog is often bred repeatedly until she no longer can bear puppies. There are many reasons why one should avoid buying a dog from a puppy mill. First and foremost, puppy mills are notorious for breeding unhealthy dogs. Dogs from puppy mills typically have a variety of genetic health problems, ranging from joint problems to heart disease. In addition, puppy mills often keep dogs in horrible conditions, with little or no veterinary care. Dogs in puppy mills may also be malnourished and abused. Conclusion In conclusion, Golden Retrievers have an average of eight puppies. However, a breeder or owner can mate their Goldie at the right time, exercise them, keep them healthy, and feed them high-quality food all year long, but ultimately they cannot control the litter size. Golden Retriever puppies are fluffy balls of joy, and you must be thrilled to welcome them into your home. But how many puppies should you be expecting from this upcoming litter? On average, Golden Retrievers can have around eight puppies. Litter sizes can vary depending on the breed of dog, so there are a few factors that can determine the litter size of your Golden Retriever. This article goes over what kind of litter you could be expecting based on your Golden Retriever mother. Litter Size: First-Time vs. This is the national average for first-time mothers, so it is normal for your dog to give birth to a few less or a few more. However, it is always important for her to have check-ups with a vet to ensure everything is going well with her puppies. It is very rare that your Goldie will have a single puppy birth. Litter sizes of over a dozen puppies are also possible with Golden Retrievers, but not as common. If your Golden Retriever is pregnant, it is safe to assume that she will give birth to four to nine puppies. While it is always important to feed your dog a healthy and balanced diet, pregnant dogs need high-quality vitamins and minerals and premium protein. Dog food that is filled with additives and fillers can affect the litter size. Diet will also be a factor in how healthy the puppies will be after birth and what their survival rate will be. Health: If your Golden Retriever is obese or not given enough exercise, this can affect the litter. An unhealthy Goldie will more than likely produce a small litter. The puppies might also be born weak and have a smaller chance of survival. Age of both parents. You do not want to breed your female Golden Retriever too young or too old. The age range for the female to be bred is 2 to 5 years old. However, if you wait to breed your Goldie for the first time after they are five years old, their litters will always be smaller in number. The age of the male is also a factor. The sperm count in males will decrease once they reach 5 years old. Genetics: Dogs that have a more diverse gene pool are more likely to have larger litters than dogs that have been overly inbred. This is why if you go to a breeder, ask them about the parents and if they have been tested for defects. Image Credit: PorChonlawit, Shutterstock Final Considerations If you are a dog owner, you already know how important health, diet, and exercise are for raising a strong and happy dog. These factors must also be considered when deciding if you want to breed your Golden Retriever. Have her checked with the vet before she gets pregnant to make sure she is healthy and able to carry a litter safely. Ensure the potential mate is also healthy and the right age. However, no matter the litter size, each puppy will be a bundle of pure joy! A Canadian expat, Nicole now lives on a lush forest property with her Kiwi husband and new baby daughter in New Zealand. A couple of weeks ago, Raven, our Golden Retriever had her first litter of puppies. Several weeks before she had her puppies we were all curious about how many puppies Raven would have in her first litter. And what did we learn? Bring your Calmeroos Puppy the day you pick up your puppy and rub it all over his litter mates and mama. Ten years later my memory of all those puppies is still vivid. Of course in the end we came home with our first puppy, Linus! Back then the smallest litter we saw was two six-week-old black Labrador Retriever pups. Our friends at Guide Dogs of America have experienced many, many more litters than I have or probably ever will in my lifetime. I would guess they have a litter of pups at the school nearly every week sometimes two litters a week! So what did I hear from my GDA friends? The largest litter I heard about was 16 Golden Retriever puppies! Let me say that again: 16 puppies!!! The smallest litter size was 1 lonely puppy…although only children get all the attention…right, Ali Ali is my wife…an only child :? After personal experience and talking to friends and family the consensus was Raven could have anywhere between 1 and 16 puppies. Our Golden Retriever puppies! Time for a little bit of internet research. Just ask Google the following questions and find the answers in the featured snippet: What is the average first litter size for a Golden Retriever? The average litter size for a golden retriever is eight puppies. Litter sizes vary from four to 12 puppies, and humans are not usually needed for help in the birthing process. Other sites in the top 10 search have similar numbers for average litter size. What is the largest litter size for a Golden Retriever? So we can probably expect less than 24 puppies…lol. The largest litter of Golden Retrievers we found on the internet were 17 Golden pups. The Golden Retriever Forum and other sites mention Golden litters as small as one puppy. After talking to friends, and family, and doing my internet research the consensus was Raven would probably have between puppies with the outside possibilities of only 1 pup or up to 17 remote possibility of 24! We took care of litters of puppies, but the youngest pups we had were already 3 weeks old. We got those little cuties when they were about weeks old and at that age, they were a handful. I specifically remember one of the rescue leaders saying that 5 or fewer puppies are much easier to handle. That number 5 has stuck in my head for over 10 years! My fingers were crossed… Puppies from our our Golden litter! However, the day we planned on bringing her in for an X-Ray her temperature dropped which was an indication she was close to giving birth. Rather than risk her giving birth in my car on the way to the vet we opted out of the X-Ray. Raven went into labor on Wednesday, November 9th, , and at… am — Female. There are a range of factors that contribute to the overall litter size. Often genetics play an important role in the size of the litter. The size of the breed as well as the overall health of parents also effect the total litter size. Golden retrievers are considered a large breed dog, resulting in larger litters. Many sites state various different ranges. Websites, with less authority, like Ask and PetPlanet have a range of puppies per litter. Their overall average is 8. The American Kennel Club used to state that the average litter size was in the range of .However, that information can no longer be found. With smaller litters it could quite possibly be that the bitch was not bred at the proper time. Some of the eggs may not have been fertilized. The stud may have tied too early, or too late. Or it could have been possible that the sire was too old and not producing an adequate sperm count. The overall health of both parents can also be considered. It could also be a problem with the mother, such as injury, or physical defects. With litters on the larger end, sometimes they may have to be delivered cesarean. If the time of delivery is too long, some puppies may be stillborn. Cases have occurred where a puppy may be retained in the uterus causing other problems. Litters this large are generally not in the best interest of the mother. From my experience, most litters are indeed around in number. That could just be coincidental. Further litters often will have less. This is just something I have seen, but is not scientific. It is also important to note that male and female ratios can go in either directions. It is also possible to have a litter with all one gender. Our recent litter from Tina came out all female. She had eight female puppies at once. I was told by another breeder that she had a litter of 10 that were all female. It is very unlikely, but it does happen. We derived that number from hundreds of litters from various breeders. As mentioned above, the range is between 1 to 15 puppies in a litter. A breeder can find out how many puppies a female may have while pregnant via x-ray or ultrasound. An x-ray can be taken after the bones have ossified. That occurs around days of gestation. Ultrasounds can be taken around days to confirm pregnancy, but confirming the litters size is less accurate. It is however less damaging on the mother and puppies.

Poodle Colors March 18, Poodles come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, to the point that the terminology can become quite bewildering. In this article, we shed some light, rather than hair, on the rainbow world of Poodle colors, exploring the most common coat hues and patterns before delving deeper into the weird yet wonderful world of ticked and parti Poodles. Table of Contents 12 Common Solid Colors of the Poodle Most Poodles, regardless of size, come in solid colors, some of which are more common than others. Although black Poodles are often overlooked in favor of lighter-colored puppies or rescues, they are no more aggressive or less intelligent than any other color Poodle. There is one slight health discrepancy, however, in that studies have found that black and other dark-colored Poodles are more susceptible to squamous cell carcinoma of the digit SCDD than other lighter-colored dogs. Due to their poor visibility at night, these dogs should always wear an LED collar when getting walked in the dark. Some may take a year to develop the blue tinge to their coats, while others hang onto the vestiges of their puppyhood black for 24 months. A quick examination of their paws may also reveal some silver or white hairs between the pads. As a blue Poodle puppy ages, so its color clears, becoming almost gun-metal grey. Some shading is acceptable in blue Poodles, but to be true to the breed standard, they should, like the black Poodle, have black noses, dark eyes, and black toenails. Silver Another diluted version of the black Poodle, like the blues, silvers are born black but will start to clear much earlier. By the time they reach six weeks, silver hues will be apparent around the face and paws, with the rest of the coat following suit over the next year or so. Silver is recessive color, making it more difficult to breed for, and silver puppies are only really guaranteed if both parents are also silver Poodles. This process is caused by the Progressive Graying gene which is found in some black, blue, and brown Poodles. Although some Poodles are born gray and remain that way throughout their lives, others will start to change color at around two or three months of age, gradually fading as they mature. Regardless of how the gray coat is produced this color is recognized by the AKC. Like the black, blue, and silver Poodles, gray dogs should also have black noses and nails and dark-colored eyes. Cream Cream is one of several off-white colorations found in all sizes of Poodle, and distinguishing one from another can be challenging. A cream Poodle is fairly easy to identify as it is one of the few light-colored Poodles that have black rather than liver-colored noses. Establishing whether a Poodle is white or cream is more difficult as both have black points and a pale cream, in certain lights, may appear white. Experts will no doubt dismiss this confusion as pure ignorance as the two are very different. While white indicates the complete absence of color, the cream is a very diluted brown, not far from apricot. Indeed, many cream-colored Poodles are born light or even medium brown and then clear as they mature. White White is one of the most popular and most common colors for Poodles. Despite being white, a white Poodle belongs to the black hair type and therefore has a black nose, nails, and eye-rims, as well as dark-colored eyes, giving it a striking appearance. In the past, a white Poodle with pink toenails or a patch of pink skin would still have succeeded in the show ring but, these days, the AKC insists on white Poodles with black extremities only. This color needs to be washed with a special shampoo for Poodles often to stay bright and clean. Both the Toy and the Miniature Poodle carry this trait, however, and it does appear to affect those with white pigmentation more than other colors. Brown Once lumped together with Red Poodles, brown Poodles should ideally be the color of dark mahogany or a rich walnut brown, as opposed to chestnut. Nevertheless, brown Poodles boast more color variations and a wider range of hues than almost any of the other colors. Most brown Poodles are born dark and then fade as they mature, producing stunning shades of cinnamon brown and coffee. One of the biggest problems facing the brown Poodle is its tendency to have very pale yellow, almost green eyes. This is an undesirable trait in the show ring but difficult to eliminate in breeding. The most sought-after brown Poodles have amber-colored eyes, a liver nose, and dark toenails, as per the breed standard. Rufus is a recessive allele, which is perhaps why red Poodles are so rare. Red Poodles are particularly prone to color change, with some fading as they age and others darkening. Apricot Like red, apricot is a relatively new color for Poodles, having only been accepted into the breed standard comparatively recently. The first apricot-colored Standard Poodle was born in but categorized as liver at the time. Since then, apricot Poodles have won a variety of prestigious awards, and their popularity has continued. Last year, world-famous Lionel Messi welcomed an apricot Toy Poodle named Abu into his family, adding a splash of color and cuteness to the Messi tribe. Although Poodles of this color may look similar to red ones, the cafe au lait hue is closer to silver than red. Silver Beige Unlike cafe au lait, silver beige is a diluted shade of brown, and most silver beige Poodles are born brown, clearing around their face and paws within the first six weeks of life. Silver beige is much more popular than cafe au lait, but the two are frequently confused. While cafe au lait puppies are usually born that color, silver beige Poodles are born brown and subsequently fade to silver beige. Parti Poodles Parti Poodles have large amounts of white on their body. This can be mixed with any of the regular colors: red, black, brown etc. These dogs are highly sought-after. You will probably have to look for a bit in order to find the Parti Poodle of your dreams! This is produced by a specific gene and can even be seen in pure white Poodles that, if they have the ticking gene, will appear dirty. More of a marking than a color in its own right, it can be difficult to spot the spots on a Poodle puppy. More commonly found on parti Poodles than solid colors, ticking becomes increasingly obvious as the puppy matures. While the United Kennel Club sees ticking as an acceptable trait in a Poodle, the AKC disqualifies such dogs from conformation classes, as it does parti Poodles. Some Poodle owners are convinced that certain colored dogs are cleverer than others. The idea behind this theory is that black and white Poodles were the original breed standard colors and have therefore been bred for temperament and intelligence, rather than color. You may indeed have a particularly intelligent white Poodle at some stage in your life, but you could equally have an Einstein-style Tuxedo Poodle. At the end of the day, Poodles are as varied as humans, and some are blessed with superior intelligence just as others are endowed with an especially friendly temperament. What is the Most Popular Poodle Color? Whites are common and much-loved for their regal appearance, while the black is easier to keep to clean, making it popular among more practical Poodle owners. Are Parti Poodles More Expensive? Do Poodles Have a Favorite Person? While most dog breeds adore whoever feeds them, Poodles are a little more particular, selecting their favorite human based on their personality, rather than their ability to provide care and sustenance. The Bottom Line The world of Poodles is full of color and variety. While traditionalists may prefer to stick with the standard breed colors, those drawn to the exotic may find the parti Poodles more attractive. An ancient breed dating back to the 15th or possibly even 14th century, it seems unlikely the Poodle will ever lose its popularity. For Stud Introduction The Old Tyme Bulldog was developed in the British Isles in an effort to recreate a variety similar to bull-baiting dogs during the 16th century. This medium-sized breed has slightly longer snouts than that of an English Bulldog. With its short and close-lying coat, grooming is very easy. Although it may have a tough-looking exterior, it has a sweet and eager-to-please temperament. This lazy breed needs about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise to maintain a healthy body. Are you considering an Old Tyme Bulldog? Here is a brief background of this sturdy-looking but affectionate dog breed. History In the late 's Steve Barnett started the breeding program of the Old Tyme Bulldog in the British Isles in an attempt to recreate a variety of bulldog based on old bulldog breeds. It is similar to the bulldog breeds of the early 16th century showing the same athletic build, graceful appearance, and a pure bulldog temperament. These old original bulldogs were bred for kings and queens of the Tudor period and participated in the barbaric sport of bull-baiting where it got its name bulldog. During bull-baiting, the bulldog flattens itself to the ground as it creeps close to attempt to bite the nose or the head of the bull. The Old Tyme Bulldog early use was not limited to sports. Its role also extends in a city-wide round-up effort. It was trained to lead and corner dangerous wild bulls away from the crowd. Since it is a new breed, it is not recognised by The Kennel Club. Despite it, it has become one of the more popular breeds in the UK. Appearance and Grooming The Old Tyme Bulldog is a well-proportioned medium-sized dog with very muscular shoulders and hindquarters. Its chest is broad and deep with sprung ribs. Acceptable coat colours include brindle, black, pied variations, blue, and slate grey. Proud, confident and fearless, this dog breed showcases an athletic physique that projects an image of grace and power. This bulldog loves to be groomed except for nail trimming and enjoys baths. Since it has smooth and shiny coats being a short coat, has low grooming needs. To keep its coats in top condition, it only requires a weekly brush and wipe over with a chamois cloth. One significant indication of an Old Tyme Bulldog's health is reflected through its coats. You should check for bare spots, scabs and other skin problems. Also check between toes, wrinkles and tail for cysts or inflammation. If you notice anything not normal, make sure to have it checked by a professional vet right away. Although not everyone can afford to go to a professional grooming centre, it is important to know the basics of grooming an Old Tyme Bulldog and avoid potential health problems. Temperament and Intelligence The Old Tyme Bulldog may look rough, sturdy, muscular and big-boned but in reality, this dog breed is sweet with an eager-to-please temperament. This powerful looking dog breed will thrive basically in any environment. Because of its adaptable nature, it is affectionate and most often attached to its master, adapting easily to any lifestyle. It gets along well with people, especially children. While it is sociable, it is also fiercely loyal determined to protect its masters. The Old Tyme Bulldog constantly looks for human attention, which makes it excellent companion dogs. This breed is good with other dogs but not with cats. Though not a fast learner, the Old Tyme Bulldog is a smart dog. When training, it is essential to start early. It takes a lot of time and patience because of its stubborn nature and tendency to do things at its own pace. However, this characteristic must not be confused as being wilful. Short training sessions and positive reinforcement such as high-value rewards are keys to train an Old Tyme Bulldog successfully. Nutrition and Feeding A typical serving for an adult Old Tyme Bulldog is 2 to 3 cups of excellent quality dry dog food per day. When it comes from a breeder, transition the new puppy slowly to an organic, all natural diet. Servings and feeding frequency depend on age, size, build, and metabolism. The Old Tyme Bulldog needs high protein food in its diet. This helps aid muscle, bone and joint growth to support its daily activity needs. It tends to bloat so feed it smaller meals times a day throughout the day to prevent this from occurring. Health and Exercise The Old Tyme Bulldog is a generally healthy dog breed that can live as long as 12 years but like any dog breed, it is predisposed to certain medical conditions. The Old Tyme Bulldog is not a very active dog but it still needs an adequate amount of exercise daily to stay healthy. It needs about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a day combined with mental stimulation. Take it to short morning walks when the weather is cooler. Cost of Ownership If you are interested in caring for an Old Tyme Bulldog, you would need to go on a waiting list as this breed is rare in the UK. You would also need to spend on dog accessories such as leads, collars, eating bowls, crates, beds, and toys. Moreover, you need to consider paying for pet insurance to offset veterinary bills in case your dog suddenly falls ill or gets into an accident. This estimate does not include the rates for other services such as walking and grooming. This breed gets along with children and other pets. Boasting of a stable and dependable temperament, it is a great dog for first-time owners. It does not have demanding requirements in the grooming and exercise front. It is prone to certain medical conditions like Sleep Apnea and Pulmonic Stenosis. Are you sure the Old Tyme Bulldog is the best breed for you? Usually, when we think of a Labradoodle, we think of a dog with the friendly temperament and work ethic of a Labrador retriever with the low-shedding curly coat of a poodle. However, it is not always possible to predict what characteristics a hybrid dog will inherit from their two parent breeds. First generation Labradoodles are just as likely to have the coat of a Lab as a Poodle. A straight hair Labradoodle is a mixed Lab-poodle dog that has inherited the straight coat of their Lab parent. They are also called a flat coat Labradoodle. This means they have a high-shedding coat rather than the hypoallergenic coat of Labradoodles with curly hair. But aside from their coat, they have the same overall personality and temperament profile as other Labradoodles. Read on for our complete profile and what exactly to expect from a straight hair Labradoodle. Vital Statistics Breed: Mixed breed of Labrador retriever and poodle Size: 21 to 24 inches for a standard Labradoodle smaller variations also exist Weight: 50 to 70 pounds Coat: Medium to long scruffy coat that is high-shedding Color: Chocolate, cafe, parchment, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, chalk, lavender, blue Life Expectancy: 10 to 15 years Potential Health Issues: Hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye issues Temperament: Intelligent and friendly Energy Levels: High; at least one hour of exercise a day Attachment: High; does not thrive when left alone History Of The Breed Labrador retrievers were bred in England in the 19th century from dogs imported from Canada. The result is a breed with a soft mouth and strong work ethic that loves the water. Meanwhile, the poodle is an older dog breed that originates from either France or Germany their exact origin is in dispute. The breed seems to have been around from the 15th and 16th centuries and was a popular lap dog pet by the 18th century. The poodle is highly intelligent and sensitive, making it an excellent companion. The Labradoodle was created in the s by bringing the two dogs together to try and reduce the shedding of Labradors while maintaining their characteristic intelligence and friendly personality. They became popular in the late s when breeder Wally Conron introduced them to the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia as a new working dog. Labradoodle Breeding Genetics There are a variety of different classes within a mixed breed dog family. The first is a F1 mix, which is a mix of the two parent breeds. In this case, it means a Labrador retriever parent and a poodle parent, though they could be standard or smaller in size. An F2 Labradoodle comes from breeding two F1 Labradoodles. As you head further down the breeding line, you are less likely to encounter Labradoodles with straight coats because this is one of the traits breeders usually control for. One of the purposes of mixing Labs and poodles was to try and control the high-shedding coats of Labradors, so breeders will usually favor the low-shedding poodle coat. Size And Weight The size and weight of a Labradoodle depends principally on whether the poodle parentage is that of a standard poodle, or of one of the smaller types of poodle. Labradors will measure between .Poodles come in standard, medium, miniature, and toy sizes. Standard poodles are quite large. They measure 18 to 24 inches in height and weigh 44 to 70 pounds. Mixing a Lab with a standard poodle will get you a standard Labradoodle, which measures 21 to 24 inches and can weigh 50 to 70 pounds. Medium poodles measure 14 to 18 inches tall and weigh 33 to 42 pounds. Miniature poodles are 11 to 14 inches tall and weigh 26 to 31 pounds. Toy poodles are 9. Introducing one of these poodles into the Labradoodle mix results in smaller dogs. The smaller poodle will always be the mother to ensure a safe birth. Read our full guide to the different sizes of Labradoodles here. Coat And Color In theory, a Labradoodle can inherit the tightly curled and low-shedding coat of their poodle parent or the straight double coat of their high-shedding Labrador parent. Most of the Labradoodles you come across will have the poodle coat because this is a trait breeders specifically control for. But in some rare cases, the coat may show up as an anomaly further down the line, or a breeder may favor this characteristic. Labradoodles with straight hair will more or less look like they have a medium-length scruffy coat, which makes them look a little like a teddy bear. What exactly the coat will look like can vary. It may look a consistent length over their face and body, or it may sprout in longer tufts in some areas or feather along the tail, legs, and face. The coat might be slick and glossy or have a more matte and flat finish to their coat. It is worth noting that while their coat is straight, they will probably not have the double coat of a Labrador. This means less seasonal change and less shedding than a Labrador. But straight hair Labradoodles will still shed a lot and need to be brushed regularly to remove excess hair and stop them from leaving it everywhere they go! But even with regular brushing, dog hair will be a part of life. On the positive side, they do not need to be taken for a professional cut as often as their curly-haired cousins. Additionally, they can be a variety of different colors. While black, chocolate, and yellow are most common, they might also be cafe, parchment, apricot, red, silver, chalk, or blue. Intelligence Labradoodles are known for their intelligence, since both Labrador retrievers and poodles are considered among the most intelligent dog breeds. Labradors are also eager to please and thrive when they have work to do and receive reward. This makes them highly trainable. Poodles can be a little more independent in their thinking and therefore less cooperative, but they are still sensitive to humans. But despite this, Labradoodles tend to be about as easy to train and control as Labradors. This makes Labradoodles great working dogs for disability assistance and search and rescue. It also means they are excellent and obedient pets, even for first-time owners. Temperament Both Labradors and poodles have a friendly temperament and never tend to be aggressive. They bond quickly with their people. For poodles, this bond can be quite exclusive, and they may be a little bit wary of strangers. Labs, on the other hand, tend to like everyone. This means Labs and their Labradoodle offspring make terrible guard dogs, even if they inherit a little poodle wariness. This means if a Labradoodle is barking, it is usually for a good reason, and you should pay attention. Labradoodles are friendly with children, and they also get on well with other animals. They are more likely to form a close bond with the house cat than chase them around the yard. Socializing your Labradoodle from a young age can foster this behavior. Just like their parent breeds, Labradoodles bond with their humans intensely. They can develop destructive behaviors if left at home for eight hours a day while the rest of the family is at school or at work. They do better in homes where there is usually someone around or if they can go to work with someone. So, while they benefit from outdoor space, they will need to be inside the house. This is something to bear in mind with a straight-hair Labradoodle, since they will shed. Diet And Exercise Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that need lots of exercise, usually a minimum of 60 minutes a day. Also, this should involve running, jumping, pulling, and searching, and not just a casual walk. Labradoodles are adventurous and will enjoy accompanying the family of hikes and day trips. They also love to swim! Their straight coats are actually made to repel water. This means it is easy for them to overeat and put on excess weight. This is not good for their heart and other organs and can also put unnecessary strain on their joints, leading to mobility issues. Remember that all the treats you give them during training or just because you love them also contain calories! Want to know more? Read our guide to the Labradoodle lifespan and what to expect from each life stage. FAQs What is a flat coat Labradoodle? A flat coat Labradoodle is a Lab-poodle mixed breed dog that has inherited the straight hair coat of their Labrador parent rather than the curly coat of their poodle parent. Is an F1 or an F2 Labradoodle better? F1 Labradoodles often tend to be healthier than F2 variations of the dog. But breeders are better able to control for certain characteristics with F2 dogs, so their appearance and temperament can be more predictable. Straight Hair Labradoodles It is very difficult to tell whether a Labradoodle puppy will grow up to have the curly coat of a poodle or a straight coat of a Labrador. So, you may be expecting one and end up with the other. Alternatively, if you are just a fan of the teddy bear look of a straight hair Labradoodle, you can seek one out. Regardless of their coat, Labradoodles have the same wonderful personalities. They are friendly and will want to spend as much time as possible at your side. They are easy to train and will very quickly feel like members of the family. Just remember, if your Labradoodle has straight hair they will shed. Brush them regularly to keep their shedding under control. Read our guide to how much Labradoodles cost. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. While it seems logical that removing as much fur as possible would keep your pet cool for the summer, cutting off too much hair coat can lead to dry skin, sunburn, flaky skin, overheating, and irritation. This is especially true for Labradoodles with a straight coat type. Lamb Cut A lamb cut is an adorable option for dogs with hair coats with a lot of volume. In this cut, the whole coat is left a little longer than it is on the puppy cut to make the dog appear more shaggy. Then, the hair of the feet is kept longer but is lightly scissored to blend in with the rest of the body. The hair on the feet can be beveled or rounded. This gives the illusion of the fluffy legs of a newborn lamb. This cut is fantastic for dogs with a smooth coat. The Not-So-Long Cut While the not-so-long cut looks like the style that would need the least work, it can actually be a lot to upkeep. Thus, the upkeep on this coat can be demanding, but it is a great option for a winter coat. Kennel Cut Image Source The kennel cut is a no-nonsense cut for busy dog parents. Keep a 1-inch level coat over the whole body of the Labradoodle. This includes the snout area and the ears. This gives your doodle a younger look, as the short fur seems a lot like a puppy coat. However, be careful not to remove too much while requesting a kennel cut. This works best for doodles with a slightly wavy coat. The hair of the lower legs is kept slightly longer and is blended in with the rest of the body. The face and ears are trimmed short, giving your doodle a puppy-like appearance. This haircut is a lot like a teddy bear cut. The difference is that the teddy bear cut usually refers to doodles with a curly coat, and the puppy coat usually refers to dogs with a smooth coat. Medium Cut Image Source The medium cut is a basic cut that is bound to look great on all Labradoodles. Here, around 2 inches of the fur is kept on and the face area is trimmed neatly. It looks good on Labradoodles with a straight or wavy coat texture. It is very similar to a medium cut, but the eyebrows and mustache of your doodle are kept fairly long, giving him the stereotypical Schnauzer look. To achieve this, your groomer will likely use scissors for the beard and mustache. Beard Trim The beard trim is a variation of the Schnauzer trim, but the eyebrows are trimmed shorter. This is a good option if your pup gets a lot of dirt and debris stuck in their eyes, which you constantly have to clean. However, keep in mind that the long beard will get dirty when your doodle is eating or drinking. Therefore, you might have to keep a small towel handy to dry off this area. Pet owners can do this hairstyle at home with a pair of clippers and a comb. One thing to keep in mind is that the metal clippers can get very hot when using them. Pet owners should own clippers so that you can rapidly switch in between them. Waiting for them to cool down takes a lot of extra time, so switching is a more time-effective option. Natural Coat Image Source The hairstyle that has the lowest level of maintenance is the natural coat. All you need is basic grooming practices; brush your dog regularly and trim areas like the eyebrows and beard, just for comfort. This is very cheap and low-maintenance. You might even find that your smooth coat Labradoodle develops waves if it gets long enough! Ensure that you are brushing frequently to prevent matting. A straight coat Labradoodle is a Labradoodle with no waves or a curly coat. Instead, they have long, straight hair-like fur much like a Labrador Retriever. Breeders may use genetic testing on the parent doodles to figure out how many puppies in the F2 litter, or second-generation Labradoodles, will have a curly coat. In these tests, they check for the Cu Locus quality , which dictates if the Labradoodle has the curlier, more allergy-friendly coat gene, the straight coat gene, or a mix of both. Based on this information, they often breed subsequent generations with poodles to increase the chance of traits like a curly coat and less dander. Are they double coated? Yes, Labradoodles with a straight coat are double coated. This means that they have an inner, softer layer and an oilier, outer layer. These 2 layers work together for efficient temperature regulation. How can I tell if my doodle puppy is straight-haired? Your puppy loses their softer, finer puppy coat at around 6 months. After that, the coarser adult coat begins to come in. It should look like a scruffy labrador retriever with wiry, longer fur. Do straight-haired doodles shed more? In general, these dogs seem to shed more than their curly-coated counterparts. There is a simple reason behind this. Consider a poodle with a fleece coat. However, a straight-coated Labradoodle has finer, straight hair so the hairs that they lose will fall off their body immediately. This is why they seem to shed more than curly-coated doodles. However, they definitely shed less than a purebred Labrador Retriever. Due to this, they are also more allergenic. Essentially, since the poodle has hypoallergenic fur, the less poodle DNA is in your dog, the less hypoallergenic it will be. Thus, flat-coat doodles can cause a more severe allergic reaction than other doodles. Should I get a straight-haired doodle? For example, consider the grooming quality and frequency you can provide. How often will your dog be playing outdoors? How often can you brush them? Brush your doodle regularly with a de-shedding brush, especially in the early spring months. This is because your dog will slowly shed its winter coat as the days get warmer. Only bathe them around once a month using gentle shampoo. If they get dirty in between washes, you can just rinse them with water and rub off any dirt with a wet rag. Make sure to brush them thoroughly after bath time, to catch any loose hairs that fell off. If you have given your Labradoodle a longer hairstyle, then you just need to get it touched up every months. However, if you have a shorter, more shapely style, like the kennel cut or the puppy dog cut, then you must trim it every month or so. In Conclusion It may seem confusing to groom a hair-coated Labradoodle. However, straight-haired doodles are adorable, easy-to-maintain dogs that are actually more common than you might think. Some may have a scruffy look where tufts of hair sprout out of their body, while also having a short wavy or curly fur undercoat covering their body. Other straight hairs are completely covered in medium-long fur, that grows consistently all over their face and body. Their coats can range from straight to wavy hair, similar to a labrador. They can also be slick and glossy, or flat and matte, with feathering along the tails, and around the legs and face. Typically a straight coat will vary in length and thickness, with no two dogs from the same litter being guaranteed to have the same type of fur growth. As puppies, straight hair coats will not begin to grow out their hair until they are eight weeks old. By the time they are 12 weeks old, it will be clear as to what sort of coat the puppies will have. No, not all labradoodles have curly fur. They have both fur and hair actually. You may have noticed that I have been freely switching between the two during my explanations. This is because hair and fur are the same thing. Can Straight Hair Coats be Shaved? Typically the answer will be no. If you live in a hot country, then during the summer times, it might be worth considering to give them a trim. Not a shave! Just a light trim to help stop their bodies from over heating. The fur coat, actually protects their skin from sun burn, and helps to prevent it from drying out, which can cause skin conditions. Clean up the hair around the dogs face, in particular around the eyes, if it has bushy eyebrows, and around the muzzle. It is best to look at reducing the length of the fur in areas that can could cause health problems or discomfort, if the fur was to become clumped up and mattered. How to Best Control Shedding? Straight haired labradoodles shed a lot more than any other labradoodles. As tempting as it may be to shave your furry companion to help counter shedding. It nonetheless remains inadvisable and should be avoided. It can be lessened however. Just as we humans shed hair, so will a healthy and happy dog. Throughout the year, your pooch will continue to shed hair, more so as the weather warms up and their winter coat falls out. To counter this, get in the habit of giving your dog regular grooming. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog in a comfortable environment, as stress can cause a dog to shed even more. A good diet helps to promote stronger hair follicles and a shinny coat, that can help reduce shedding. Some owners later discover that they are allergic to straight haired labradoodles. While it may be tempting to shave off their fur, in an attempt to eliminate the allergic reactions. This should never be done! Allergies are not triggered by dog fur. They are caused by pet dander — skin particles that are shed by the dog all year long. By shaving the fur off, the owner is actually making things worse for themselves. It drys the skin out, removing moisture and causes rashes to develop. As a result more skin is shed, exposing the pet owner to more dander. As more skin conditions develop or worsen, the dog will start scratching releasing even more dander into the air. How Often Should a Dog be Bathed? Bathing your dog can be effected by many different factors and can be very situational. You may need to bath them more frequently for medical reasons, or because of what they have decided to roll in. Generally speaking, bathing your labradoodle should be more infrequent. Over bathing your dog can strip its fur of natural oils that help to protect their skin and strengthen their hair. Ideally, you should limit proper bathes to when they start to smell a little, or if you need to remove matter from their fur. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Dogs do not need to have baths as much as humans need to. How to Watch Out for Skin Conditions If your Labradoodle has any skin conditions, this could cause them to shed more fur, or even release more dander into the air. They may show signs of a skin condition by excessive scratching or nipping and licking at the same area. Remember mites and parasites can cause just as much damage to the skin as over-bathing. If you are wondering if the straight hair coats are the sort of labradoodles for you, please consider the following points: Their coats require the lowest level of maintenance. Many breeders strive for Labradoodle puppies that have curly hair, as many prospective owners prefer them due to their likelihood of being non-shedding and allergy-friendly. This is why you may notice more curly Labradoodles rather than straight haired ones. Photo courtesy of nednoodlethelabradoodle on Instagram. As a Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross , Labradoodles inherit traits from both of their parent breeds. Coat texture is just one of the many traits that can differ not only from litter to litter but from puppy to puppy. Since this gene is inherited from the Poodle side, a Labradoodle puppy with Cu Locus will have a coat that is more wavy or curly in texture. Reputable breeders perform genetic testing on the parents in an attempt to produce healthier and more desirable puppies. More often than not, breeders strive for curly coated Labradoodle puppies since they are more likely to be low-shedding and allergy-friendly than flat coated puppies. This is why breeders will sometimes refer to straight coat Labradoodles as having improper coats. Genetics are tricky to predict and no breeder can guarantee a certain coat type. However, which generation your Labradoodle is will drastically influence the odds of them having a flat coat. You can also look for a breeder that backcrosses Labradoodles to Labrador Retrievers. However, those parings are extremely rare. Keep in mind that many prospective owners are looking exclusively for curly haired Labradoodles. Are Straight Hair Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? While no Labradoodles can be considered completely hypoallergenic, straight haired Labradoodles have a greater risk of triggering allergy reactions than curly haired Labradoodles. On average, a Labradoodle with a flat coat will still be more allergy-friendly than a purebred Labrador Retriever. Straight Hair Labradoodle Shedding Straight hair Labradoodles will likely shed a moderate amount, but usually not as much as a purebred Lab. All Labradoodle puppies have fine, soft, straight hair at first. But, as they grow, a curlier adult coat may replace this. But, they have easier grooming requirements. A Labradoodle puppy coat will be softer, finer, and straighter than their adult coat. In fact, many knowledgeable Doodle breeders can do a pretty good job of predicting which type of adult coat type a Labradoodle puppy will inherit. Labradoodle adults with straight fur have the hair type coat. Hair Coat Type The Labradoodle hair coat type is not silky straight, it is often thick and slightly wavy. This coat type is most similar to the Labrador Retriever parent. Either way, like the Lab parent, hair coated Labradoodles will shed year-round and may blow their coat during shedding seasons. Despite this, the hair coat is fairly wash-and-wear. A weekly brushing and occasional bath is all the maintenance it generally needs, unless your Doodle rolls in something stinky. The hair coat type is most likely to trigger allergy symptoms in owners that are allergic to the protein allergen in pet hair. Fleece Coat Type Overall, this coat type takes greater influence from the Poodle parent. It is soft and wavy — think angora wool and you are on the right track. If bred to the Australian Labradoodle breed standard, Labradoodles with a fleece coat will have one layer. This coat type is much less likely to shed out visibly than the hair type, but it does shed. The hairs are just more likely to get trapped in the surrounding coat. So, fleece coats may trigger fewer allergy symptoms. Of course, with less shedding, there is more potential for tangles and mats as the shed-out hair gets trapped in the surrounding coat. So, owners will have more brushing and grooming duties. Wool Type Coat The Labradoodle wool coat type is the main coat type that is considered allergy friendly. But, this coat type still sheds. Like the fleece coat, the hairs just get trapped in the surrounding fur rather than falling to the ground. Because of this, it can be truly time-consuming to brush and groom the true wool Labradoodle coat type. Earlier we mentioned how the puppy coat has a softer, finer, thinner texture than the adult Labradoodle coat — no matter which adult type they have. But how can you know if your Labradoodle puppy will keep their straight hair or grow up to have a wavy, fleece coat or a curly, wool coat? By 14 months old, your puppy should have their full adult coat. So, the sort of time that a puppy will go to their forever home. This is more likely when you are working with a later generation breeder. Many later generation breeders will work specifically with fleece or wool coat Labradoodles as breeding stock. This means a hair coat Labradoodle puppy is less likely. Choosing an Older Dog Another option if you really need or want a Doodle with a wool or fleece coat is to consider rescuing an older Labradoodle. This way, you can spend time with the dog before bringing them home. You can see if your chosen Labradoodle triggers allergy symptoms, if this is a potential issue for you. Of course you will miss out on the puppy stages. The Labradoodle breed was first created in an attempt to get a hypoallergenic guide dog. However, studies have shown that there is really no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. This is because dog allergens are found in dander, saliva, and even urine — not in fur. So, even wool and fleece type Labradoodles are not hypoallergenic. The main reason they may trigger fewer allergy symptoms is that their curly fur catches shedding dander. But, none of the three hair types are hypoallergenic. They could all trigger allergy symptoms. You dog may yet grow up to have that lovable curly fur! Even if not, Labradoodles with straight hair have all the same popular traits, and they require less grooming! Does your Labradoodle puppy have straight hair? References and Resources Byrnell, J. Whilst most people believe that all Labradoodles have a wavy or curly coat, it is actually very common for Labradoodles to have straight haired coat, taking after their Labrador parent more than the Poodle. Some Labradoodles look more like Labradors then Poodles, especially when they have a straight coat instead of a wavy or curly one. This occurs when Labradoodles do not inherit the curly coat gene called the Cu Locus gene and most commonly occurs for F1 Labradooodles. The Hypoallergenic Factor It has to be said before we dive into this topic from the perspective of a straight-haired Labradoodle that no Labradoodle and indeed no dog can ever be said to be absolutely hypoallergenic. The allergens that sufferers of the condition respond to when it comes to dogs are the proteins found in their saliva. A low shedding coat simply means that there will be less of these about the house and, therefore, less chance of triggering a reaction. As Labradoodles do tend to shed quite a bit more than curly or wavy-coated ones, they can be said to be less hypoallergenic. However, these dogs lose a lot less hair than the Labrador Retriever, which is practically famous for it. So in that respect, they are better for those looking to have less hair about the place. People with allergies, though, might want to up their chances of a low-shed pup by selecting a generation with more Poodle DNA. Labradoodles inherit the curly-haired gene from their Poodle side but not from the Labrador Retriever side. They are every bit as much a Doodle as the curly kind. How much do flat-coated Labradoodles shed? There are environmental factors at play as well as genetic ones. Beyond that, dogs can shed more if there is an issue with their diet or if they are being bathed too much. What we can say with some degree of certainty is Labradoodles shed much less than purebred Labradors do. Is a Labradoodle a high-maintenance dog? Labradoodles can be pretty energetic hounds and require plenty of both physical and mental stimulation. In that respect, they can be a little high-maintenance. With regards to coat care, flat-coated Labras are far, far, FAR easier to care for. The main reason for this is that curly and wavy hair, when left unbrushed for long periods, can become horribly knotted and tangled. This can create mats that are impossible to get a brush through. For this reason, curly-coated Labras require daily brushing, but straight-coated ones only need doing once a week. How do you tell if a Labradoodle will be curly? Look for the presence of furnishings longer patches of hair around the tails and legs, but especially around the ears and across the bridge of the nose. The more obvious these are, the more likely it will be that your puppy will have a Poodlesque coat. They are just as adorable as more traditional-looking Doodles — and much rarer to boot. Different Types Of Dog Collars For Labs The main non-cosmetic differences between dog collars are in the materials and the fastening mechanism. Plus, they always allow for multiple different size settings. As for materials, these are the basics: Metal — a lot of people love metal, especially for mid-sized to large breeds like Labradors. Leather — this is the classic choice for dog collars. Its main drawback is that it can get stinky over time. This is especially true if your dog loves to swim and Labrador retrievers are a water dog breed. Fabric collars can come in a lot of different designs and compositions. Some of the more colorful ones are especially fun for puppies. Synthetic polyurethane-type materials — these intuitively put off some people but are an excellent choice. Training collars used to be very popular at one point for both puppies and adult dogs. These collars take many different forms — they can be pronged, pinching, and electro-shock collars. Their idea is simple — teach your dog not to pull on its leash with the negative reinforcements of the collar. Dog harnesses today are viewed as a better and safer alternative to training collars. These are used mostly for training and for adult dogs, however. You should start using those as soon as your pup is big enough. It is all rather bewildering, but there is no need to worry! Collars as a Fashion Statement A collar is the traditional way of attaching a restraint to a dog, for the purposes of keeping him safe. Before harnesses were invented this was an essential feature of life in a modern world, where cars and other hazards are everywhere. But in many homes and families, a collar has become something of a fashion statement too. A whole industry has arisen to meet the demand for different fabrics and styles. Training Collars for Labs Many people look on a collar, as an aid to training their dog how to walk on a leash. A way to get their dog to tread along nicely next to them, without dragging or pulling them along. They want to choose a collar that will best help them in this goal. Prong collars and pinch collars have been designed that are uncomfortable and even painful when a dog leans into them. The problem of course, is that pulling is often very rewarding for a dog he gets nearer to the destination he likes. So collars usually have to be quite painful if they are to successfully stop the pulling. The width of a collar has a direct relationship to the amount of pressure the collar puts on your Labradors neck. But of course, a wider collar is heavier and can be uncomfortably rigid so you have to strike a balance. Also, very wide collars can look a bit silly on all but the very largest of dogs. My recommendation? A good 1. As a general rule of thumb, this means you want to measure the circumference of your Labs neck with a measuring tape and then add 2 inches. For example:You measure your Labradors neck to be 18 inches. Add 2 inches for a correct fit making the collar you need 20 inches. So for our example, we want to buy a collar with 20 inches in the center of what the collar says it fits. We should buy for instance, a collar to fit necks from 18 to 22 inches as 20 is in the middle and gives room for adjustment each way. This creates a scenario where pulling causes a punishment and will decrease the behavior over time. Using them incorrectly and especially if ill-fitting, these collars can cause considerable harm and are considered by nearly all to be inhumane and should be avoided. However, there are some old-school, traditional trainers who swear by them in extreme cases, for strong and stubborn hard pullers when all other training avenues have failed. Having said that though, like most people, we do not condone them, believe they are inhumane and will not promote their use on this site. For a somewhat detailed discussion on the use of prong collars, please click here. This collar can be very dangerous to use with the potential to cause permanent damage to your Labrador if used incorrectly. So extreme caution and education is needed before anybody ever considers using this collar. However, like the prong collar, we do not condone them and believe they should never be used and will not be promoted here. How to Use Training Collars If anybody does ever decide to use a prong or choke collar, please have a professional trainer show you how first. The idea is definitely not to asphyxiate the dog into submission! Luckily there are now many methods to train a Labrador to walk nicely beside you without the use of such collars. Therefore I will rarely discuss their use on this site and certainly do not recommend their purchase or use. No exceptions please, always remove these collars when not training! There are also slip leads, harnesses, and halters to consider that are more suitable for use in specific situations. These are often used by working dog owners who want to avoid a traditional collar as they can be a choking hazard on a dog that spends time running through undergrowth. If yours is the type of dog who spends a lot of time off leash in bushes and undergrowth, then I can certainly recommend the use of a slip lead. To see the slip leads we highly recommend at Labrador Training HQ, please click here. The harnesses I would recommend are front clipped no pull solution dog harnesses that are a good choice for those with Labs that are determined pullers. This contrasts with a back clip harness where a dog can really put his whole weight and strength into pulling, such as the harnesses you see on a husky! Head Halters A halter for a dog looks much like a halter for a horse and has the same use. With a halter, when you or your Labrador pulls on the leash their head is pulled downwards or off to the side. This makes it very hard for the dog to pull forward as this would cause their head to be pulled even further down or to the side. This results in the dog stopping and over time teaches them that pulling only leads to stopping so they soon learn not to pull. So a halter is a useful training aid for walking a Labrador that pulls obsessively. But paths, fields and parks are mostly unlit and this is a dangerous situation for your Labrador to be in. Wearing a high visibility or even LED collar eliminates this danger and allows everybody to see where your Labrador is in the dark. You can see and read more about our pick of the two best high vis, LED lit collars by clicking here. The last thing you want is it to break when on a walk so you cannot restrain your Lab. During this check, also make sure the collar is adjusted to fit well as your dogs weight and coat thickness may fluctuate between seasons. A Few Final Tips! Bacteria can grow under a sweaty damp collar, taking it off regularly will help decrease this and the associated, very unwanted smell! This raises less suspicion than if they had the wrong name and makes it easier for them to sell the dog on. Collars Recommended By Us So which collar should you buy? I actually recommend the purchase of 3 different collars for 3 different uses. For everyday use, I recommend a flat collar with a quick release or buckle fastener, made from leather or synthetic fibers. For when you take your lab out swimming or hiking, I recommend a quick release collar no belt style buckle or rope slip-lead, removing the possibility of a collar snagging and becoming a choke risk. Finally, I recommend a high visibility collar for wearing in the dark, so you and others can more easily see your dog which can help prevent accidents on dark country roads and paths, whilst helping you not to lose sight of him and worry all the time. You need to attach ID tags to collars while out in public in the UK and many other countries. Prong collars, choke-chains, halters and harnesses I would never buy or recommend. Measure The Neck Size Of Your Lab Puppy It varies from puppy to puppy in terms of neck size, in the manner of how people vary in terms of their physical characteristics like size and shape. You can use this guide to figure out what collar fits your pup. You should always measure the neck of your lab pup rather than guessing its size to ensure a perfect fit. Simply start measuring from his head down a couple of inches and then add an extra inch. It will be easier to pick the right collar size for your labrador puppy if you know what to look for. Numerous aesthetically pleasing, durable, and cost-effective collars are available to choose from. A variety of materials, such as leather, nylon, and cotton, are available. You can also get a breakaway collar that lights up at night to make sure your puppy or dog is safe. It is also possible to find no-pull collars which are extremely effective in preventing a hyper-active puppy from yanking out of control while also teaching them how to walk properly. With a few of the top collars for lab puppies available on the market today, we have taken the time to cut through the clutter and provide you with a selection of well-made, durable, and highly-rated collars. As there are two different types of collars you can use on your canine companion. The collar you choose depends on your personal preference and budget. And if your lab loves swimming, then use cotton collars. These cotton waterproof collars contain polyurethane-like synthetic materials. In addition to being odor-resistant, waterproof collars are easily washable. Our favorite thing about them is that they are usually bright in color, which is something we love about them. Leather Collar — This is a luxurious and traditional collar for dogs that offers the perfect balance of functionality and style. In spite of their higher cost, a leather collar is likely to last for many years to come. Keep in mind that you should only buy a collar made of genuine leather. The leather bonded together consists of scrap leather, which glued together using an adhesive. Although the leather of this type might resemble the feel and appearance of genuine leather, it provides less durability and is dreadful in quality. Dogs, especially those with thick coats that tend to matt around collars, generally preferred to wear collars made of rolled leather. You can choose from a wide range of color choices, designs, and sizes. Lab puppies can wear these on walks as well as at home. The nylon collar is a standard collar that can be worn for many purposes. Neoprene Collar — Neoprene is an extremely flexible rubber material used to make wetsuits, bolstered with nylon mesh to provide extra durability, flexibility, and strength. If your dog spends a lot of time in the water, a neoprene collar is a perfect choice. Biothane Collar — Dogs who enjoy swimming will love biothane collars too. Contains non-toxic materials composed of polyester weave and powder coatings composed of polyurethane or polyvinyl. Neoprene and leather collars are expensive, while biothane collars are more comfortable, easier to wear, and more affordable. A collar needs to be checked every two to three weeks. Look for indentations and signs of wear and tear. The collar should replaced immediately when you notice any defect that may upset the dog or endanger his safety. If it does, your dog will suffer from pain and discomfort. When your puppy is indoors, it is best to remove its collar. It attracts bacteria when it is damp. Additionally, a dog collar not being clipped onto furniture or choking hazards in a crate will be avoided. As a general rule, puppies should be taught to wear a collar and leash around 10 weeks of age. As a result, you will be able to get started in a week or so after they have settled in. FAQs Question 1: Do lab puppies always need to wear collars? Although there are some puppies who seem perfectly happy to wear a neck collar, it is important to consider that wearing one for prolonged periods of time could harm their coat and their skin due to the friction created by the collar. Question 2: Which collar size is best for my puppy? For dogs under 10 pounds, a collar up to 12 inches long is adequate. The collar length should be from 13 to 18 inches for dogs between 26 and 55 pounds. Question 3: Are dogs better off with wide collars? There are many benefits to using wide collars for your dog, including strolling, training , and even playing with. Wider dog collars provide your pup with a better fit around the neck while walking or training. For dogs that like to play rough, a wide collar can provide a better level of safety from other dogs or potential neck injuries. Question 4: Does my labrador puppy need a smaller collar? While many people will just go ahead and get the next size up, that could be a mistake. Make sure you choose a collar that will fit your puppy as he grows into adulthood. Post navigation.

Show more Things you should know about buying or adopting a pet While pet sellers can be reputable individuals or breeders who treat their animals well, the ease of selling pets over the Internet also makes it attractive to careless, irresponsible breeders and scammers. To protect yourself, you must be careful and believe only what you see and not what you are told. It is highly recommended to arrange for an inspection of the home where the pets are bred. This allows you to check that the mother and other animals are living in suitable conditions, being well cared for, and are in good health.
