Dalmatians gained a great deal of popularity thanks to the movie Dalmatians. They also became popular as Firehouse dogs since they coached horses that were used for horse-drawn fire carriages. To date, many firehouses use the Dalmatian as their mascot. Poodles Poodles originated in Germany where they were bred for the purpose of duck hunting. Their water-resistant coats made them perfect for all kinds of water-related jobs including search and rescue. Today, the Poodle is considered one of the smartest and easiest-to-train dog breeds in the world. Poodles also make wonderful pets for allergy sufferers since their coats shed minimally and are hypoallergenic. Origin of the Dalmadoodle There are several benefits of crossbreeding dogs, the major one being that the cross-bred puppies have a lower chance of exhibiting the diseases seen in the parent breed. No one knows for sure when the first Dalmadoodle came into existence, but it may have been around the s as that was when the popularity of Doodle dogs really exploded. Dalmadoodles that are created using a Standard Poodle tend to be some of the largest Doodle dogs. However, there are mini Dalmadoodles too — obtained by crossing Dalmatians with Miniature Poodles. In general, these designer dogs weigh between lb 18 to 30 kg and measure about inches 45 to 50 cm tall. Mini Dalmadoodles can be expected to grow to between 10 to 18kg and measure less than 45cm tall. They are a medium size dog that requires less space in the house and yard than Standard sized Dalmapoo. Both varieties require significant amounts of exercise and are suited to people who live an active lifestyle. The results are unique and extremely attractive. Are Dalmadoodles hypoallergenic? This can cause runny noses and watery eyes in dog owners with pet allergies. This increases your chances of getting a hypoallergenic puppy as the Dalmatian genes are diluted and there is a greater Poodle gene pool. Do Dalmadoodles need grooming? Both the Dalmatian and Poodle have sensitive skin and coats. This means that your Dalmadoodle could also inherit sensitive skin which needs regular grooming. They do not handle weather extremities well and their skin is also susceptible to fungal and bacterial infections. Avoid bathing your dog too much and only use a vet-approved shampoo for sensitive skin to bathe your Dalmadoodle. No two dogs are the same, even within the same breed. However, you can always train your Doodle puppy to adhere to your household rules and expectations. In general, it is safe to say that a Dalmadoodle will inherit a mix of the Poodle and Dalmatian traits. Both parent dog breeds are highly intelligent and trainable so we can expect the same from a Dalmadoodle. As with any dog breed, whether it is purebred or a designer dog, your Dalmadoodle puppy is going to need plenty of socialisation and early training. This is especially important if you do not want your pet to jump on visitors or bark at every passing vehicle. Unfortunately, many Dalmadoodles tend to have a stubborn streak and can also be quite headstrong. These traits can pose a challenge during training. This is also why it is important to set firm boundaries from its puppyhood. Failure to do so could make it difficult to handle as an adult. Be sure to keep all interactions with your pet positive as Dalmadoodles can be overly sensitive. They also have long memories so if you happen to scold your pet for misbehaviour, it will remember it for ages! Keep your training methods positive since negative training will only make your Doodle shy or aggressive. Most Dalmadoodles are social and confident dogs. They are also people-like and people-oriented. This means that your dog will want to participate in everything you do! This also means that your Dalmadoodle will hate being left all alone at home. These dogs tend to suffer from separation anxiety, so it is important to get them used to staying alone right from a young age. Crate training is the single most effective way to reduce the likelihood and stop the common Poodle Mix breed behaviour problem of separation anxiety from developing. As such, no dog should be left home alone for over 8 hours. If you have no choice but to do so, it is best to hire a pet sitter, doggy daycare or a dog walker to come in and check in on your Doodle while also letting it out for potty. Dalmadoodles are very energetic dogs. They are best suited for active owners who have the time to take their pets out at least times a day. Without exercise and mental stimulation, these smart dogs can get extremely bored. Dalmadoodles are highly intuitive dogs that can make excellent watchdogs. They are sensible and alert and will not yap or bark too much unless necessary. If you have young children in the house, remember that Dalmadoodles can be quite exuberant and could knock down small toddlers. You must also train your kids to never poke your Dalmadoodle in the eye or pull on its tail or ears. Both the Dalmadoodle and the children should be taught to respect each other to ensure harmony. Remember that puppies need around 20 hours of sleep each day and adult dogs hours a day. Dalmadoodles usually get along with other house pets including cats. This generally makes them excellent pets for multi-dog households. Finding a reputable breeder can be a hassle since there are not too many and these dogs are still quite rare in the USA and even rarer in Australia. The price of a Doodle puppy will depend on the pedigree of the parent dogs used. If the parents are championship title owners or have very pure bloodlines, then the puppies will cost more. The price also varies based on the Dalmadoodles size. In general, smaller Doodles cost more than larger ones although larger Dalmadoodles will be more expensive to keep. That way you can only use the best ingredients and avoid low-quality ingredients often seen in commercial dog foods. If you opt for feeding commercial dog food, then only select brands containing real meat as the first ingredient. Avoid dog foods with corn, soy, wheat, and other fillers which provide no real nourishment to your pet. Most Dalmadoodles are quite healthy dogs. However, from time to time, diseases like skin allergies, heart ailments, bloat, certain cancers, progressive retinal atrophy, and joint-related problems like dysplasia can be seen in Dalmadoodles. If you don't know Henry's story, Let's talk about him. He's a 4yo male boxer who was hit by a car in Ohio and left for dead. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him. They never came. A complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. That's where MNBR comes in. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. The situation seemed dire. But as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!! Despite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic. But we are not getting too excited his care is not over quite yet. And he will also need follow up appointments from the surgery he just endured, bandage changes, etc. Donations are tax deductible. It could be a dog whose owners have exhausted all options and have reached out to us last minute for help. It could be a dog with a medical emergency that needs care and attention. These dogs may not be quite ready for adoption, but they need a place to go. We need foster homes to take in the boxers who need a little extra TLC, a little extra time and attention, so we can get to know what type of forever home will be best for them. How long will my foster boxer be with me? The honest answer is… we never really know. There are many factors that come into play. The first one is the age of the dog. We find that older dogs tend to stay in foster care longer. Another factor is the physical condition of the dog. You, as a foster home, can help us place your foster by providing new photos and updates for our social media page and website. A dog with lots of pictures tends to get noticed. Who pays for dog food, supplies, and vet care? The Boxer Rescue is responsible for the medical needs of dogs in foster homes. We ensure that they are current on vaccines, heartworm medication, spayed and neutered, and have any other medical concerns addressed before being adopted. Food, toys, and other supplies are generally paid for by foster homes. We do ask that dogs be fed a high quality dog food and we are happy to provide a list of recommended foods. Who screens potential adopters? The Boxer Rescue will screen any potential adopters. We value your input, as you know the dog best, and if you are not comfortable with a potential adopter, we need to know why. What happens if I can no longer foster the boxer in my care? We have to, first, secure another home for the dog. We assure you that we will do everything possible to make this happen quickly, but we need you to be patient as we reach out to others and find another placement. You will see the Boxers at the lowest moments in their lives, and you will watch them as they regain their health and that Boxer spirit that we all know and love. Boxers are highly resilient dogs, and will ingrain themselves as a part of your home and heart in no time. Saying goodbye is often bittersweet. On the one hand, you want your fosters to go to their forever home, but a part of you wants them to stay always. Be assured that your fosters never truly leave. They leave their pawprints on your heart forever. And the main factor to consider is that they are a double-coated breed of dog. The growth of their topcoat and undercoat vary. The topcoat protects your German Shepherd from dirt and sun exposure, while the undercoat protects from the cold. German Shepherds shed their coat twice a year. They have a double coat that keeps them warm during the cold winter months, and during the summer months, it blocks the excess heat and UV rays. In the spring, German Shepherds shed the winter coat. And again in the fall, they shed their summer coat. Making the coat dry and itchy could lead to irritation. It is recommended that bathing is done every months. Brushing and proper cutting will be sufficient. Shaving will also affect the growth of both the topcoat and undercoat. In effect, the dust and other particles get stuck in both layers now. Instead of shaving, trimming is a better option so as not to remove all that precious double coat. Try to bathe your dog with organic shampoo, or at the very least, avoid strong shampoos. Bathing your german shepherd will soften their hairs to prepare them for brushing later on. It will also remove excess hairs. Dry your German Shepherd with a towel to wipe away excess water. Use a dog hair blowing machine if you have, or a high velocity hair dryer. Blow in the direction of hair growth, and not back and forth. Brushing will also straighten their coat in preparation for trimming. You may want to simply trim a few hairs here and there, and not all over. Remember that their double coat serves a purpose. This is just to polish their overall look. You can start from the neck and work your way down, keeping the head for last. Use the Right Grooming Scissors Although there really is no special dog hair cutter for German Shepherds, you can use a good pair of dog grooming scissors. If you are a novice, you may want to practice with curved scissors, especially as you notice, your GSD has a lot of curves. This can be used for the legs and feet, rib cages and the head area. There are straight scissors available too, for grooming dogs. Many prefer the shorter pair even if it is more time-consuming. As a quick summary, bathe, dry and brush your German Shepherd prior to trimming. Keep a steady hand and make sure too, that your dog is calm and ready for a trim. In most cases, a German Shepherd will not need their hair cut. Even with the long-haired variety of the breed, the German Shepherd's coat should not cause the dog any mobility, visibility or hygiene issues. Other breeds have vast amounts of hair and clipping their coat is beneficial to make their day-to-day lives easier. If not, the fur can get in their eyes or make it very easy for their coat to get dirty. This is not the case with German Shepherds. Another reason a German Shepherd doesn't need a haircut is because their coat provides important protection. Since German Shepherd's have a double-layer coat, shaving them to the skin removes both the outer-coat and undercoat. This is problematic for different reasons: Cold: in winter, the dog's coat will help them to keep warm. Shaving the coat or cutting their hair short will stop them from being protected from the cold. Heat: German Shepherd dogs are able to well-tolerate hot climates, even with the longer coat variety. Giving them a close haircut means they lose important protection from the sun and they cannot regulate their body temperature properly. Injury: removing the dog's protective coat means they are more prone to scratching and other injuries. Infection is a greater risk. If they fight with another dog, they are also at a disadvantage if they have to protect themselves. When you shave a German Shepherd's coat, you will remove its undercoat. When this happens, it will not grow back properly. While it may rectify itself over time with more shedding , it leaves the dog vulnerable and prevents them from properly regulating their body temperature. It also can cause ingrown hairs and other skin problems which could have been avoided without unnecessary hair cutting. When is it OK to cut a German Shepherd's hair? As we said, shaving a German Shepherd is dangerous as it removes their undercoat. When this happens, they are unable to grow it back properly. However, there are a very few circumstances when there may be a need to cut a German Shepherd's hair. Parasite infestation: in some cases, a severe infestation of external parasites will require the dog to have some of their hair removed. In most cases, washing the dog with parasiticidal shampoo or topical medication will be sufficient. Shaving the animal will be a drastic measure and only a qualified veterinarian can decide if it is an appropriate treatment. Surgery: a German Shepherd may need to have parts of their coat shaved to make an incision for surgery. Spaying and neutering will also require shaving of their hair, but only in localized places. Even in these cases, it is unlikely that more than a localized area will need to be cut completely. In long hair varieties, it may be possible that the dog may receive some benefit from having part of their coat trimmed. If so, we will need to speak to a professional groomer. This should be carried out with scissors and not clippers. Although we should never shave or give our German Shepherd a haircut, this doesn't mean they don't need to be groomed at all. How often do you groom a German Shepherd? Whether medium or longhair, a German Shepherd will need a moderate amount of grooming. Some dogs are very prone to tangling and have fine hair which required daily brushing. A German Shepherd should be brushed about 3 times a week. There are different reasons we need to brush a German Shepherd's coat: One of the main reasons for brushing their coat is because they will drop dead hair. If this is not brushed, it will collect in their coat and threaten their hygiene. It will also lead to hair accumulation on furnishings and floors in the home. Dogs will molt much more hair during shedding seasons. Brushing also helps us to distribute the natural oils of a dog's coat to protect them from the elements and other threats to its condition. When we brush a German Shepherd's coat we can check for injury and parasites. We may not be able to spot a small wound, skin condition or parasites such as fleas from looking at them. Once we get in close by brushing we can monitor for issues which threaten their well-being. Brushing a dog's coat helps to remove tangles and knots. This is something which will affect long haired dogs more. When we brush our German Shepherd's hair we also encourage our bond. If they are sheepish about brushing, we need to get them used to the practice. In doing so, we foster a sense of security with them. While it is possible to use one type of brush for a German Shepherd dog, it is better to use a variety. Slicker brushes have little balls on the end of their bristles. These are ideal for the top coat and guard hair. It helps to keep the hair in condition and the dog will often enjoy being brushed with them as they feel therapeutic. Undercoat brushes have finer teeth and are best at ensuring the undercoat is kept in best condition. These can be most useful during shedding season as they will be best at removing dead hair. Long hair dogs may need a different brush to medium dogs. Dematting combs are special brushes which have metal teeth to help us work out tangles and knots. They will only need to be used when necessary. If we brush our German Shepherd regularly, the dog will not likely need a dematting comb. Nail and teeth care for German Shepherds Now that we know how to care for a German Shepherd's coat, there are other aspects of their hygiene we need to consider. Brushing a dog's teeth is an often overlooked aspect of grooming. We need to use a specialized dog toothbrush and toothpaste. We must never use the ones designed for humans. We should brush a dog's teeth an average of twice a week. However, we need to check with a veterinarian in case they have any dental diseases or issues which may require us to do it more. Clipping a dog's nails is something we should do whenever they are too long. We can tell if a German Shepherd's nails are too long if they grow past the paw pad. We may notice this if they walk over a hard surface and we hear the nails knocking against the ground. When the dog's nails are too long, we need to use a canine nail clipper. As a dog lover, it's in your best interest to do your research on the dog breed. A thorough brush removes dead and loose hair from their coat, helping to keep the fur healthy and shiny. A German shepherd without an undercoat has the same degree of feathering, but the outer coat is softer and not as coarse. Dog hair varies by breed, but also from dog to dog. German Shepherds have a double-coat. Their outer coat is coarse and waterproof. It protects their skin and undercoat from the weather. Their undercoat is soft and fluffy. If you shave a German Shepherd, it messes up this balance between their inner and outer coat. Often, the topcoat will be cut down to the bottom coat. This prevents the topcoat from doing its job. Therefore, shaving a German Shepherd in the summer may make them hotter — not cooler and is not advised. It removes their protection from the elements and makes their coat not function properly. However, you may be able to trim your German Shepherd to a degree. It was designed to keep them cool in hotter climates as well. For instance, you can shave around their ears to reduce the amount of dust and debris that get trapped inside. Often, longer fur can hold onto moisture and dirt. Eventually, these invaders can lead to ear infections. You should also trim the fur on the bottom of their paws. This fur is not necessary for any reason. It can cause more harm than good. Mud and snow can get stuck in this fur and work into tiny balls — causing pain and discomfort when your dog walks. These can cause pain and often need to be cut out. Doing so may remove too much of the outer layer, which causes the same problems as shaving. Sometimes, you may trim around their eyes and face.
