Although multiple color variations of GSD exist, black German shepherd puppies are one of the most popular thanks to their sleek, handsome coats. The pitch-black color that gives these dogs their magnificent appearance is the result of a naturally occurring recessive gene. This means black German shepherds have naturally existed for quite some time, but they are much rarer than their black and tan counterparts. When properly socialized from a young age, black German shepherds make wonderful companions and excellent guard dogs. These large doggos are best suited for experienced owners with large homes and fenced-in yards. If you are looking for a handsome companion that can double as a guard dog, the black German shepherd is a fantastic choice! Keep on reading to find out more about this rare variety and decide if it is the right canine for you. Black German shepherds are a color variation of the standard German shepherd dog. While they may look completely different, these dogs are the same breed, and the black variety is recognized in the official GSD standard. While purebred black German shepherd puppies can compete in dog shows, they are often overlooked in favor of the classic black and tan look. These dogs were later used by the military as messengers, sentries, guards, supply carriers, and rescuers. Black shepherds tend to be slightly larger than the average GSD, and most have a straighter back. When it comes to features, you can expect your black German shepherd puppy to have a clear-cut head, pointed ears, a long snout, almond-shaped brown eyes, and a black nose. Males are usually around 24 to 26 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. Female dogs are typically smaller and stand between 22 and 24 inches tall and weigh from 50 to 75 pounds. The average GSD can be black and tan, black, sable, grey, red and black, or even black and silver. In German shepherds, black coats are caused by a recessive gene. This means a puppy needs to inherit two copies of a recessive gene from both mom and dad in order to have a black coat. For example, if you mate two sable German shepherds that carry this recessive gene, a quarter of their puppies will have a black coat. However, if you breed a black German shepherd with a sable dog that carries the gene, roughly half of their litter will be black in color. Breeding two black German shepherds is the only guaranteed way to produce a litter of completely black puppies. Bear in mind that all German shepherd puppies change color as they grow. Coat Texture These pitch-black canines have a medium-to-long double coat. The coat can be either straight or wavy and will shed all year long and go through two blowouts — once in the spring and again in the fall. If you decide to welcome a black GSD into your home, be prepared to welcome lots of loose doggy hair as well! Since these doggos shed a lot, invest in a powerful pet hair vacuum cleaner and be prepared to vacuum every day to keep your home clean and tidy. Black German Shepherd Temperament And Character Black German shepherds are best known for their loyal, courageous, obedient, and watchful temperament. Thanks to their protective nature and working history, they make amazing guard dogs that will fiercely protect your family and your home. A properly trained and socialized black GSD puppy will get along well with people outside the family but remain a loyal guardian and protector. They are naturally wary of strangers, so early socialization and consistent training are a must! Although they are working dogs at heart, black GSD make wonderful companions and even get along with children and other pets when properly socialized. An anxious or stressed black shepherd will turn to destructive behavior to relieve their frustrations. As a result, your black German shepherd pup may decide to chew woodwork , destroy your home, or bark loudly. While they are not the best choice for first-time owners, black shepherds make fantastic family pets and companions when properly trained and socialized. Because they tend to get so attached to their people, these pups are better off in homes where someone is usually around to keep them company. Activity Level Highly energetic and agile, these handsome solid black pups need regular exercise to stay healthy and in good shape. Apart from at least two daily walks, your black German shepherd pup will also enjoy running, jogging, hiking, cycling, swimming, or any other activity that allows them to spend time with you. Caring For Black German Shepherd Puppy While they are not harder to care for than standard German shepherds, your black GSD still needs a lot of love, care, and affection to stay happy and thrive. It is crucial to design a consistent care routine for your pooch and keep track of regular veterinary check ups to detect any health problems early on. When creating a care routine for your GSD puppy, pay special attention to the following factors: Exercise The black German shepherd is a highly energetic dog that needs at least one hour of intense exercise every day. Enrolling your puppy in agility classes is a great way to keep them exercised and can be a fun and entertaining experience for them. Games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, tug-of-war, and hide and seek are also great options and will keep your pooch exercised and entertained. Intellectual Stimulation Black German shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that can easily become bored, frustrated, and destructive when not mentally stimulated. A bored or anxious black shepherd can cause serious damage to your home and belongings. Companionship Loyal and devoted to a fault, black GSD puppies make superb family dogs and companions. They form strong bonds with their people and are happiest when they can spend time and interact with their families. While they are large and intimidating at first, these pups are loving companions that crave affection and attention. Black German shepherd puppies need company and are best suited for homes where someone is around all day. Grooming The black German shepherd is a high-maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. If your pup has a medium-length coat, brush them two to three times a week to remove loose hair and keep their coat in pristine condition. Use a de-shedding tool to remove loose hair and minimize the shedding during spring and fall. To further reduce shedding, bathe your GSD with an anti-shed dog shampoo every two months or as necessary. You should also brush their teeth at least three times a week and trim their nails every other month. Diet An ideal diet for black German shepherds should be formulated for a large-sized dog with high energy. When choosing the best food for your pooch, make sure it contains higher levels of protein, a moderate amount of fat, and easily digestible complex carbohydrates. Keep in mind that black German shepherd puppies grow extremely quickly between the ages of four and seven months, which makes them susceptible to bone disorders. Feed your pup high-quality, low-calorie food to prevent them from growing too rapidly. Known Health Problems As a breed, German shepherds are considered generally healthy. Black GSD and all other German shepherds are prone to the same health problems, including: Hip Dysplasia: This is a hereditary condition that causes malformation of a hip joint. Affected dogs may or may not show clinical signs of this condition, but in most cases, dogs experience pain and lameness in one or both hind legs. Elbow Dysplasia: This is another hereditary condition commonly seen in large breeds. This condition is caused by varying growth rates of the three bones that make up the elbow, resulting in joint looseness. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus: Also known as bloat, GDV is a life-threatening condition that affects large, deep-chested dog breeds, particularly if they are fed one large meal a day, eat rapidly, drink a lot of water after eating, or exercise just after a meal. Degenerative Myelopathy: This is a progressive disease of the spinal cord. This condition affects the part of the cord that gives information to the brain regarding the rear legs. Lifespan The black German shepherd has an average lifespan of around 9 to 13 years. With proper care and regular veterinary checkups, these pups can reach their senior years in good health. Training A Black German Shepherd Puppy Black German shepherd puppies are highly intelligent and obedient, which makes them very easy to train. These pups are fairly easy to housetrain, and they also learn obedience commands after just a few repetitions. Like all other dogs, black German shepherds thrive on reward-based training and a lot of praise. Positive reinforcement training techniques are highly effective for training puppies and adult dogs and are much more reliable than dominance training. Besides training, you should start socializing your black GSD puppy as soon as you bring them home. Since these pups are naturally aloof with strangers, early socialization is essential and will help your dog to become friendlier to other people. Try to expose your puppy to as many people, places, situations, animals, children, and sounds from a young age to help them grow into an outgoing dog. Properly trained and socialized black German shepherd pups make wonderful companions to people of all ages and families with children. Due to their large size and highly energetic nature, these dogs are best suited for large homes with spacious, fenced yards. While they can live outdoors, black shepherds should primarily be kept indoors so they can regularly interact with their people and stay close to them. In addition, because of their high social needs and potential to develop separation anxiety, they thrive in families where someone is at home often and able to keep them company. However, when compared to other varieties, black German shepherds are quite rare and hard to come by. Finding a reputable breeder might require a bit of research on your part, but all the extra effort will pay off in the long run. Since black German shepherds are rare and in demand, be mindful of puppy mills and unethical breeders who just want to make a quick buck. However, the exact price depends on a lot of factors, namely the breeder, supply and demand in your area, and pedigree and quality of both parent breeds. Black German shepherds make wonderful family pets and companions. Naturally loyal and devoted to their owners, they like to be close to their people and spend lots of time by their side. Plus, due to their protective nature, black German shepherds make excellent watchdogs and will always feel the urge to watch over you and your family. The black German shepherd is a rare and absolutely stunning color variation of a standard German shepherd dog. Loyal and protective of their owners, these dogs make fantastic family companions and can also serve as vigilant guard dogs. If you want to bring a black shepherd pup home, be prepared to: Exercise your pooch for at least one hour every day Start training and socialization from a young age Groom your dog at least three times a week Do you own a black German shepherd dog? Aysa was found in April of that year, in the state of Indiana, with a catastrophic spinal injury. She was found with her deceased mother, both suspected hit by cars. Aysa was taken to a vet clinic…. And there she lived in one of their kennels. Aysa is completely paralyzed from the bottom of her ribcage down, and If no one could be found, Aysa would be euthanized, as living in a kennel at a vet clinic is not a life she should be experiencing. Joeys Paw asked us, we said yes. Mark took up the task of planning her freedom flight and his team at Code 3 worked together with Pilots and Paws to get Aysa from Indiana to PA. When Aysa arrived that Friday evening, she went home with the director to be assessed, evaluated and to await her foster being ready for her. Upon arrival we noticed she had a very infected sore on her hip. It was cleaned, treated. But it was concerning. Over the weekend, we learned she loved baths. She needed her bladder expressed, but she could defecate on her own. And she was. She went to the vet where we learned how catastrophic her injuries were. And that they could not be fixed with surgery, with any treatment. At that point in time, her leg was ravaged with infection. And then Aysa said, hold my ball. Her leg healed, other cuts and infections creeped in, but those healed too. She bonded with her foster mom, they settled into a routine, they became two halves of a whole. Aysa got stronger. She learned she likes to walk on her front legs. She wants to do it on her own. And here is what has been decided. Aysa will be staying with her foster mom… no longer a foster, but as a forever. They have their routine down. She is safe, loved, cherished, extremely well taken care of, and she is most importantly…. .So we may still ask for things for her from time to time. And in the meantime—thank you to her foster, now forever mom. For loving her, for saying yes, for caring for her, for being the savior she needed and always will. We appreciate you and are so grateful and extremely happy for you both. Thank you for your continued assistance with everything this girl has needed. The first three photos are her now with her forever mom. We recently posted a wishlist, but it is no where near filled, and when these kiddos arrived, we realized quickly that they need some extra care. Please note we have already ordered what we needed, but do need to replace the funds for what we spent. I saw a post of a friend last evening looking for a fospice home. She got details and learned that the local humane society had a senior boy with a large tumor that the vet who examined deemed inoperable. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they will alert you of strangers at the door, they tend to warm up quickly as they are more interested in making friends and receiving attention. Mini Goldendoodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their smaller size makes them a great fit for apartment living or for bigger homes with yards where they can run. As long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention, they can adapt well. These little dogs tend to do well in just about any climate. However, like any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Due to their smaller size, you may need to gear up with some dog-friendly winter gear when temperatures start falling. Because this dog breed is loyal and people-oriented, they love to be in your company and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. This means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it early on. Instead, make sure your new Mini Goldendoodle puppy has an active role in your life. If you do need to leave them alone for a bit, make sure they have some comforting toys or challenging puzzles to keep them from getting bored. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of the parents. They tend to be sensitive to tone of voice as well. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, a Mini Goldendoodle will strive to be obedient and impress you and tends to excel at almost any task. These traits make the Mini Goldendoodle one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Although the parents of this breed have a lot of energy, a Mini Goldendoodle tends to sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are usually enough for them. But, they are also likely to match their energy level to yours, so be prepared for some bursts of energy as well as plenty of cuddling on the couch. Fully-grown Mini Goldendoodles usually stand inches tall at the shoulder. A Miniature Goldendoodle puppy can vary in size based on the generation of the dog. The result is generally a dog that will range from pounds. With easy-to-follow tips on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with one another, you will be amazed that it is not that hard to speak dog at all. Sound fictional? Maybe not. The German shepherd dog Terra Nova The German shepherd dog Terra Nova is a complete guide to a degree view of German shepherds that will be a step-by-step guide for you and your entire family in raising the dog. Equipped with extensive chapters on feeding, grooming, and training the dog into a well-behaved adult canine. It also has a detailed chapter on canine health that is reviewed by experienced veterinarians, which suggests dietary plans for the canines as well as discusses the parameters for ensuring their health. The main emphasis of this book is on behavioral problems and how to correct them. Things like separation anxiety , disobedience, and chewing are addressed in great detail. This one is a little longer than most of the others, and so some people might find it harder to read. The language used is mostly common and non-technical, but it will require your full attention. The best thing about this book is the fact that it provides virtually all the information that a German Shepherd owner needs to know. It may not emphasize all subjects equally, but all the important subjects are covered. The author has no verifiable credentials, and only claims to have about five years of experience with German Shepherds. Still, this book seems to have resonated with a lot of people. That suggests that Mr. Daigneault learned quickly and that much of his information is correct. In some ways, this lack of professional candor makes the book more appealing. Everything is written in simple and common speech, making it feel more like a talk with your neighbor. At the very least, the author has produced a book that covers all the most important information in a way that many people enjoy. FAQ Here are a few of the most common questions that we receive on this subject. The simple answer to this question is no. A single book or even a whole shelf of them will not be helpful unless you learn how to apply their lessons in a practical way. At the same time, books can provide you with a lot of helpful information to aid in your practical learning. Dog-related experience is often not as well-documented as other kinds of experience, so you will have to judge by the content alone. You want to make sure that your chosen book covers all the relevant subjects. If there is a lot of generalized statements without any specific info, that is a red flag. A good dog training book should cover as wide a variety of situations as possible, and that is how you can tell that the author has experience. You should also be on the lookout for statements that you know to be false. Some people prefer to zip through a book like this, coming back later to review its lessons. Some others prefer to take their time and fully absorb the lessons of each chapter before moving to the next. In most cases, this is just a matter of personal preference. The only advice we can offer here is to read and learn at a pace that feels natural to you. Unfortunately, these sorts of books are not always written by qualified experts. For this purpose, we want to give you some general information about German Shepherds. This is meant to serve as a comparison point so that you can tell a well-informed author from a poser. As such, we will be limiting ourselves to those facts upon which most experts agree. We can see that a dog of this kind should stand about inches tall if male and inches if female. Other kennel clubs might have slightly different standards, but an expert should at least be within the ballpark. When it comes to weight, the story is very similar. Males should be between pounds while females range from pounds. It is also worth noting that a purebred German Shepherd must have a black nose. Any other color will be disqualified. All-white coloration, cropped ears, floppy ears, and docked tails are also considered to be non-German Shepherd traits. Behavior This factor is a little bit harder to evaluate because it will vary among individuals quite a bit. Still, all German Shepherds tend to exhibit common behavior patterns , and an expert will surely know these patterns. The most common of these is a mixture of fearlessness and calm. This breed is not normally known for aggression, but they are not the kind of dog to slink away in fear when you yell at them, either. The German Shepherd also tends to be a little bit more aloof. It can take a little longer to create a bond of friendship with a German Shepherd , but the effort is well worth making. That brings us to another essential behavioral quality of the German Shepherd: A firm determination to protect their master and pack. The AKC breed standards that we looked at earlier should be helpful again. On the subject of temperament, this breed is supposed to be outgoing and energetic. Timidity or nervousness are not considered to be typical of the breed, and can even cause disqualification at a dog show. Of course, excessive aggression is also a disqualifier. Breed History According to most sources, the German Shepherd dog has existed in Germany for many centuries. By crossing the different breeds of working dogs that were common in the northern and central parts of the country, Von Stephanitz and his peers may have achieved this goal. Technically, the first German Shepherd was a dog named Horand. Stephanitz found this remarkable animal at a dog show and found him to be the perfect example. Horand, then known as Hektor, had the exact mix of intelligence, loyalty , strength, and tenacity that Stephanitz wanted. As such, he was bred to the finest stock including several wolf mixes and produced the breed that we know today. Grooming Grooming helps to make any dog a little happier. The German Shepherd has a double coat, which means that they have two layers of fur. Thankfully, they are still somewhat easy to brush. About 30 minutes to an hour per week is enough to do the job. These dogs tend to shed a lot, and that will make frequent grooming less necessary. One bath every months is sufficient. One task that is very important is nail trimming. Any expert on the breed should mention this task, as it has to be done often. This breed will tend to grow extremely long nails without regular trimming, and that is very uncomfortable for the dog. Ear cleaning is also more important for this breed due to the fact that their ears stand erect. It is easier for dirt and debris to get into those canals, so give them a gentle swab with a Q-tip at grooming time. Best German Shepherd Dog Training Books: Parting Words We hope that this article has given you a better idea about how you can choose the best book for your needs. Still, a little bit of homework can make the choice an easy one. So, which one of these books is the best? We cannot really say. The needs of every reader are different, and everyone has different levels of reading proficiency. As such, we urge you to look carefully and consider what you need from that book. Apart from that, we hope that you will return soon to read more of our work.

That is one of the biggest myths in dogdom. First, ignore the silly show-ring clips. Poodles can be clipped to look like normal dogs. See the pic of my cream Poodle, Buffy? It takes me 15 minutes every 6 weeks to run over her coat with a handheld clipper 5 blade and turn her into a shorthaired, normal-looking dog who is a snap to brush. Poodles also have the advantage of being the lightest-shedding, most hypoallergenic of all coated breeds. If you have allergies, a Poodle is the safest breed for you. Second, far from being sissy cushion-sitters, Toy Poodles are miniature athletes. They excel in advanced obedience competition, where retrieving and jumping skills are required, and in agility obstacle course competitions, where they fly over and under and through the obstacles with a strength and grace that is breathtaking to watch. I do need to mention the two different builds, though. The correct build for the breed is "square", which means their legs are long enough that their height is approximately equal to their length. These Toy Poodles are both elegant and athletic, moving with a light, springy gait. Other Toy Poodles are built lower to the ground, with short legs and a long back -- these dogs have inherited a physical deformity called chondrodysplasia. They don't have the same elegance or agility as square Toy Poodles and they are more susceptible to disk disease. But whatever the build, a good Toy Poodle is one of the smartest and most trainable of all breeds. He is a "thinking" dog who pays rapt attention to his owner, learns quickly, and responds eagerly to positive training methods. Indeed, Toy Poodles NEED some sort of mental stimulation in order to be happy, even if it's just challenging games such as hide 'n seek, or fetching a variety of named toys. This intelligent breed cannot simply sit in the backyard and be ignored. Most Toy Poodles make great watchdogs -- they will bark sharply at the door and they tend to be reserved though polite and non-aggressive with strangers. But there are also individuals like my dog Buffy, "who never met a stranger. With other dogs and cats, Toy Poodles are peaceful and accepting. However, this breed is by no means perfect. Besides the regular clipping, they do need daily exercise, as they are lively dogs. And they do need a lot of daily companionship. They suffer from loneliness and separation anxiety if left alone too much. Poodles also learn "patterns" so quickly that they tend to anticipate everything you're going to do next, which can be disconcerting. They expect their routines to always be the same, and they can get flustered if you change things. Poodles are "soft" and sensitive dogs, sometimes hypersensitive. If you touch them unexpectedly or startle them with a sudden loud sound, they tend to flinch. The most sensitive individuals are not good with small children. Similarly, Toy Poodles can get emotionally upset if there's too much activity or conflict or roughhousing in your household -- they prefer peace and harmony. You do have to watch your lines: some Toy Poodle lines are too high-strung and nervous, and this is where you'll find those neurotic Poodles that people scoff at. But much also depends on socialization and training -- i. However, Toy Poodles are not for children. Some Toy Poodles are such gentle souls they are overwhelmed by the roughhousing and mischief of small children, while others simply won't put up with it. If you want a dog who.Is very small, light and graceful on his feet, athletic and agile Has a short curly coat that is virtually non-shedding the best coated breed for allergy sufferers Comes in a variety of colors Is lively and playful Is one of the brightest and most attentive of all breeds Is easy to train and housebreak Is usually polite with strangers and sociable with other animals A Toy Poodle may be right for you. If you don't want to deal with.Clipping the curly coat every six weeks A careful search to avoid high-strung, neurotic lines Timidity when not socialized enough Emotional sensitivity to stress, tension, and loud voices Barking A Toy Poodle may not be right for you. Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult Toy Poodles have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics. If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up. A lot of people are attracted to Poodles because they're so light-shedding and hypoallergenic. But light shedding always comes with a trade-off. In the Poodle's case, it's the amount of clipping they require. To keep their curly coat short and free of mats, Toy Poodles require clipping every 4 to 6 weeks. Without fail. Professional groomers will sculpture your poodle with a shaved face, a topknot on his head, and a pom pom on his tail. That's the frou-frou look that keeps so many people from choosing a poodle. Now, if you like that look, fine. But if you don't like it, just take control of how the groomer clips your dog. Or learn how to do it yourself — it's really easy. See girl Buffy below. She is a purebred poodle, but larger than a Toy and smaller than a Miniature. Short coat, whiskery face, short ears, nothing shaved, no topknot or pompoms. Many people are surprised to find out that she's a Poodle. Works for me! Avoiding neurotic temperaments. Whenever a breed is common, many people breed them just to make some money, without having enough knowledge of how to produce healthy, stable dogs. As a result, obedience instructors and behavioral consultants, like myself, see lots of Poodles with neurotic behaviors, including hyperactivity and senseless barking. Obviously you want to avoid those dogs! Emotional sensitivity. Be honest. Are people loud or emotional? Toy Poodles are extremely sensitive to stress. They can end up sick to their stomachs, with digestive upsets and anxiety, if the people in their home are having family problems. Toy Poodles are peaceful, sensitive dogs who want a peaceful, harmonious home. Poodles are very observant. Even Poodles who love everyone will bark when they see or hear something unusual. In fact, they're often too quick to sound the alarm at every new sight and sound. You have to be equally quick to stop them. You can only do that if you have the right relationship with your dog, where you are the leader and he is the follower. In other words, your Toy Poodle must respect you. Fortunately this is very easy to do with Poodles. Read more about Toy Poodle Training. Health problems. Toy Poodles can live to 15 years old, but they're not always healthy during that time. Via text message and also email as we had been corresponding on both, I had agreed to reimburse you for the medication for your puppy as an act of kindness as worms are not covered under our health guarantee as worms in puppies are very common as you know. Your puppy had been wormed both by us and your puppy's breeder before coming to our store. I can assure you that your puppy did come to us with a clear bill of health as that is our store policy. In regards to your puppy's registration, we did send you home with your registration already paid for by us with the AKC reunite. In your paperwork it states that your AKC registration did come to you free as we already pay for that, so any other things when they contact you to confirm your registration are optional services that they offer for you to purchase as also explained in your paperwork. The check for your puppy's medicine had already been mailed out when we first offered to cover the medications for you for both the worms and also the ear mites. With everything going on in the timeframe of the purchase of your puppy, they had been willing to work with people about the timeline in the past. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. I feel like a refund is due. I have even called them and cannot get it straight. I give up and will never buy a pup from this store or any other store. I thought the pups were vet checked and ready to go when put available. I feel like with all the hasell of putting out unexpected money first thing when the pup should have been vet evaluated before leaving , medications, treatments, dr appts, etc I feel that there should be more than medication compensation at this point. I have not received any monies as I have said. If you would please send me an email, I would be more than happy to give you some phone numbers that I have. I have not had any issues with worms in my store so I can also guarantee that your puppy did not contract the worms from here. It is a rule that puppies are checked by a licensed veterinarian before even coming into our store. I personally mailed the check, so am unsure why it has not been received yet. I am writing another check today that will be put in the mail for you by end of business day today to cover what we already had agreed upon. We both agreed that as an act of kindness on our end to help you with the issues that arose we agreed to help cover the cost of medication for you puppy. The issues that you listed in your previous complaint are not covered by our health guarantee as explained to you when you took your puppy home as they can pick things up after they leave the store in their environment. Our vaccine and dewormer protocol was looked over by a licensed veterinarian and deemed appropriate for our puppies. We do not have any types of worms in our store, and as far as the deworming goes it is used as a preventative as the recommended preventative for worms in puppies is every weeks until they are 12 weeks of age. The deworming your puppy was given here was as a preventative for worms because puppies are born with worms, and we were following our vaccination and deworming schedule as directed. I'm sorry for such a delay in receiving the compensation as I know the mail system can be crazy at times. The check was mailed the 29th as promised in my last communication. Thank you so much for all of your patience. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved. 3 week old pug puppies - How Old Is My Dog? But having this information is essential to providing optimal care. The best way to determine the age of a puppy is by looking at their teeth. Are there cracked, loose, or painful teeth? Is there loss of cognitive function? All these areas help me determine approximate age of my senior patients. DiGangi says the signs of aging in adult dogs vary quite a bit based on breed, lifestyle, and medical history. They also vary based on size. Smaller breeds like Chihuahuas and Terriers tend to live longer, while giant breeds like Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds tend to have the shortest lifespans, explains Bouloy. Look for Signs of Graying Many dogs get gray hair as they age just like we do , says Dr. Graying, primarily on the muzzle, suggests the dog is a mature adult, but it does not provide a closer estimate of age than that. Other dog breeds, like Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, and Poodles, can also be inherently gray in color regardless of age. Temperament can play a role as well. In a recent study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science , a team of researchers studied dogs ages 1 to 4 to determine how anxiety impacts premature graying. They found that anxiety and impulsivity—based on indicators like destructiveness when alone and hyperactivity after exercising—were strong predictors of muzzle grayness. Known as lenticular sclerosis , this benign condition typically appears when the dog is about years of age. Lund says it can be a huge help in estimating ages for middle-aged and senior dogs. He says that most often, teenage dogs start showing signs of incomplete cataracts that typically progresses to complete cataracts. But not all dogs with cataracts are older. Lund says some breeds—including Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers —are predisposed to juvenile cataract formation at a very young age, before they are 2 years old. Cataracts can also develop because of disease e. In humans, the adult teeth begin to emerge in late childhood and early adolescence. In dogs, this occurs in the first six months of life. After that, using teeth to estimate age is tricky, she says. The rates at which these changes occur vary widely by dog face shape, breed background, diet, and the dental care that is provided. Lund says some young dogs can have tartar and plaque buildup on their teeth fairly early in life. As many dogs age, their activity levels begin to decline. Weight gain is typical at middle age, but with increased senior years, they tend to lose weight and develop decreased muscle tone, Lund adds. Part of this is because dogs in their advanced years are more likely to become less active, more likely to nap, and experience a slower metabolism. Like many large breeds, a German Shepherd dog is not considered fully grown until they are about 18 months old. Female German Shepherds continue to fill out until they are around two years old, while the male German Shepherd growth rate continues until they reach two and a half years of age. Males are larger and require more time to fill out their chest and abdomen. As you can see by the German Shepherd weight chart, these dogs can continue to grow until they are three years old, but the majority of growth occurs within 24 months. If your GSD is older than 36 months and continues to put on weight, contact your veterinarian to ensure weight gain does not lead to obesity. How big should a 6-month-old German Shepherd be? A six-month-old German Shepherd puppy will be quite large, as many German Shepherds undergo massive growth spurts between two and five months old. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. How much bigger will my German Shepherd get? There are a few ways to gauge how much bigger a German Shepherd will get. First, check your puppy's age. If your GSD is younger than two years old, they definitely have room to keep growing! Another way to tell if your pup still has a lot of growing to do is their paw size. Do their paws look large compared to their legs and body? This is a classic adolescent feature of a dog and means your pup is likely still growing! Most of the time, a dog will not grow bigger than its larger parents. What is the size of a full-grown German shepherd? An adult male German Shepherd is typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while adult female German Shepherds are 22 to 24 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club German Shepherd Standard. The estimated full-size varies significantly between sexes. In terms of weight, an adult male German Shepherd weighs anywhere from 75 to 90 pounds. A female German Shepherd weighs notably less at 55 to 70 pounds. Please keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates to give you an idea of how much bigger a German Shepherd puppy may get. Some dogs will be both smaller and larger than these weight ranges when fully grown due to a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Learn all about your puppy's physical characteristics, breed history, personality traits, and more in our comprehensive guide. Puppies up to two weeks old are tiny in size. The puppies do not move around very much and stay close to their mother. They mainly only root, feed from the mother, and sleep. Puppies open their eyes when they are around two to three weeks old. They start walking and adventuring out of the whelping box during this time. They appear to become more aware of their surroundings and they begin to explore on their own. This is characteristic of puppies up to around five to six weeks old. Puppies generally get their food from their mother until between five to seven weeks old. Puppies who are transitioning to eating solid foods and who are becoming independent of their mother are probably around six to eight weeks old. As the puppy grows, they start becoming more active. By eight weeks old, the puppy is acting how people typically expect a puppy to act. Because their teeth are coming in, they begin chewing on things. They also begin playing in an energetic manner and exploring everything around them. They will also spend a lot of time sleeping in between playing and chewing. Puppies have a growth spurt between eight and sixteen weeks of age, and then they continue visibly growing over the next several months. As they age, puppies will lose their puppy coats and gain their adult coat. Puppy coats are very soft, while adult coats are denser and thicker. Puppies who are between six to twelve months old will start testing their boundaries. They get an increase in energy and are distracted easily by everything. They may start chewing more things around the house, and they love to explore and may wander off. Most puppies will have reached their full size by the time they are between eight and twelve months old. Larger breeds will continue growing for up to two years. A dog under two years is still considered an adolescent. They have some puppy-like qualities, like chewing and energy, but they may have calmed some. Unspayed female dogs typically have their first heat at months old. You also might notice that her vulva is swollen, or producing blood-tinged or straw-colored vaginal discharge. If you are unable to figure out how old the puppy is based on the teeth or developmental stage, you can take them to the vet. The vet will be able to look at the size and breed, along with the teeth, and give you a fairly accurate estimated age. Whenever you first get a puppy, you should take them to the vet to get a checkup. The vet can tell you their age during your first visit. You may have been given an age or age range for your pet, but still wonder if that estimation is accurate. How Old is My Dog? Check their teeth. By six months, the baby teeth should be gone. Beyond that, though, without knowing the birthdate, it can be difficult to use teeth as the defining factor. Observe their eyes. However, these changes are not present in every older animal and there is not a specific age at which you can expect to see these changes. Cataracts, for example, can develop in young dogs due to congenital disease, ocular trauma or other metabolic diseases like diabetes. Look for grey hair. Typically, greying of the muzzle starts around the age of five, but some dogs may go grey as early as two-years-old. Consider the breed. Look for signs of arthritis. If your dog seems to be experiencing joint pain or stiffness he may have arthritis. Have a vet complete a blood profile. Senior dogs may be more susceptible to issues or diseases that would show in the blood test, while a younger dog, would most likely not have irregularities. What are these milestones, and when can you expect them to meet them? We break it all down here, so you know exactly what to expect each step of the way. When you adopt a German Shepherd puppy, it can seem like they just keep growing. A fully grown German Shepherd will stand between 22 and 24 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 50 and 90 pounds. This manifests itself in many ways, but the most notable factor is their energy level. Puppies tend to have far more energy and be a little clumsier than fully mature dogs. German Shepherds leave their first puppy stage at around the 6-month mark, when they reach adolescence. When a dog reaches sexual maturity varies drastically depending on their sex. Male dogs tend to reach sexual maturity anywhere from 6 to 9 months, while female dogs tend to wait until adulthood. If you want to neuter a dog, you have a much smaller window to prevent puppies than with females. Their adult teeth are much larger and less sharp than their puppy teeth. Image Credit: aleksandra85foto, Pixabay Final Thoughts With so many age ranges that your German Shepherd can mature in various ways, it can be hard to keep track of everything. Related German Shepherd Reads:. Learn more » Puppies change so drastically, even in the first few weeks of life. Sometimes, it can be hard to pinpoint just how old a puppy is. After all, you have to figure out how much to feed them, what kind of chews they need, and how big you can expect them to get. So, are there some physical clues to help you figure it out? You should be able to ballpark it using a combination of physical and mental traits. During the first several weeks of life, your pup will gradually develop their sight. Vision is blurry at best once they open their eyes and it takes some time to adjust to this big world. Their vision will improve by the day until they fully develop at 8 weeks. While their retinas work slightly differently than humans do, they can still differentiate some colors. If you want to entice your puppy, note that they see blue, violet, and yellow best. This slim spectrum is called dichromatic vision and exists in all dogs, regardless of age. But can we narrow it down even more? Image Credit: , Pixabay 2. Puppy Age By Teeth Puppies are born without teeth, but they soon develop a mouthful of needle-sharp points. If you see that your puppy has no teeth, they are likely under 3 weeks old and need their mother around the clock. Their baby teeth start erupting at around 3 weeks and finish up by 6 weeks. Your puppy loses their baby teeth between 12 weeks to 6 months. You might find a little tooth here and there when they start to lose them, or you might not see them at all. Your puppy might show signs of pain or discomfort during this time called teething. You can buy teething toys to ease pain and channel energy. Offering toys with interesting textures can help keep their attention rather than gnawing on shoes. After 6 months, even when a pup has all of their adult teeth, they will still chew if they feel the urge. So, make sure they learn good habits early on. Many times, with mixed breeds, it can be hard to pin down. For instance, if the mother is significantly smaller or larger than the father, it can create a lot of size possibilities in the litter. You might have a few pups that are toward one end of the spectrum or another. However, if you have a purebred dog, there are diagrams and charts designed to show you where they should be with growth. Image Credit: Boryana Manzurova, Shutterstock 4. Check Overall Body Structure As puppies age, their overall structure changes. They go from a pudgy, bellied, clumsy ball of fluff to an older, more mature-looking dog. Even their fur changes texture as they age. Puppies are usually born with fluffy, often dense coats. When they reach 6 months, they should lose their puppy coat completely. It will be replaced with sleeker adult hair that usually sheds more. You might notice their coat color changes a little bit as the transition happens, too. If you compare early on pictures of any puppy to their adolescent phase, you can see contrast differences in fur coloring. As they get older, you might notice their muscle tone, too. However, you might notice that between 6 and 12 months, muscles are much more defined in the legs than ever before. Your pup is growing into that lean teenager stage. If you have a dog who should have pointy ears, they can take their sweet time developing. You may have adopted a German Shepherd , only to wonder when those ears are going to perk up. How Does Your Puppy Act? Puppies are born barely crawling. By 4 weeks, your pups should be walking on their own. They might be a little clumsy on their feet, but they usually are pretty sturdy by the week mark. You might notice a really huge personality shift between 4 and 8 months. There are a lot of physical and mental changes happening at this time. Manners are crucial to this time frame—you want a well-behaved dog because of consistent training. Puppies are capable of learning as soon as they come home at 8 weeks. The more you work with your puppy, the smoother the teenage stage will probably be. Every dog has a different personality that can influence their behavior—no matter how old they are. Did you see either parent? Do you know if you have a toy, small, medium, large, or extra-large breed? The type of dog you have says a lot about what to expect as they get bigger. Once again, mixed breeds can be tricky, especially if parents differ a lot in size. Even puppies in the same litter may be all different sizes in comparison as they grow—but are all the same age. When you take your new puppy in for their first check-up, they can validate or tell you just how old they estimate the pooch to be. When your vet examines your puppy, they will look them all over to see how developed they are. Many breeders could potentially give you a 6-week-old puppy and tell you that they are 8 weeks. Since they might not get the proper nutrition or know how to chew food well, it can be a time-sensitive matter. If you just happened to get a rescue pup, finding out their age might be a really important thing, especially since you want to celebrate milestones. No matter your reasoning, veterinarians and animal experts devote their life to pet care—they can definitely help you out. They do not develop these important senses until after birth. They can barely move and rely fully on their mother. Between 14 and 21 days, their eyes open up and their vision slowly starts to come. Puppies start hearing shortly after that with hearing coming into full force by 8 weeks. By 3 months, your puppy should start to get the hang of small concepts, like potty time. This is all very new to them! During the first 3 months, puppies will need core vaccines to protect them from potentially fatal diseases like parvovirus , distemper, and rabies. Your vet will probably recommend getting your puppy microchipped at this point. They go from adorable, small puppies to a terror—this is usually the most playful stage. By 6 months, your puppy will be close to their adult size. They might pack on muscle and weight throughout the next 6 months, but the bulk of the growth will be finished by the end of the sixth month. Potty training and basic commands should be coming into full swing. Your dog should know their name, simple obedience, and the concept of potty training. You can get your pup in for a check-up at their vet for their 6-month appointment. This is also a good time to schedule or discuss options to spay or neuter as they come into sexual maturity at this point. If you have a larger breed, some vets may suggest waiting on this procedure until they are finished growing. We all know how difficult human children are during this point, so expect nothing less from your dog. They might test their boundaries, chew up your belongings, master escaping enclosures, and do lots of other pain-in-the-butt things. If you have older dogs, you may see the pup getting put in its place a lot. Especially bigger breeds who might not realize just how large they are. They might take a little longer to mature mentally, but their bodies are just about there. You might notice a huge difference in growing speeds. Most pups have finally grown into their feet, so they are less clumsy. But man oh man, are they probably naughty. This age group really gives you a run from your money. You just have to get over that hump. Remember to have patience and understanding that your pup is just a growing guy or gal. They might fill out a bit, but usually, their bone structure and organs are as they will be. They will still have an abundance of energy. Even though it can be quite challenging, it will be worth it. If you work with your dog properly, they will have awesome temperaments and able bodies. You can check at home with a few of these tips, but if you want the highest level of accuracy—ask a vet. Let us estimate how large your German Shepherd will be as an adult by inputting their age and weight into the calculator below. German Shepherds are considered a medium-to-large-sized breed. This means they often fall around the line that separates medium-sized dogs from large-sized dogs. The AKC wants males stand at inches and weigh pounds, making them considerably larger than females in some cases. Females stand at inches and weigh around pounds. As you can see, this is a huge range. There is a significant difference between a pound dog and an pound dog. Therefore, how big your particular dog might get depends largely on their genetics. You can often get somewhat of an idea by looking at both of their parents. Typically, if the parents are smaller, their puppies will be as well and visa versa. What does a 4-month German Shepherd weigh? Usually, 4-month-old German Shepherds weigh about pounds if they are males and pounds if they are females. Once they are born, genetics tend to take over. At 4-months-old, the puppies have been growing according to genetics for long enough for you to guess what their adult size might be. A dog that is small at this age is likely to remain small. They are simply focusing on growing larger at this point. They should have all their puppy teeth and decent motor skills. How big is a 6-month-old German Shepherd? Puppies undergo massive growth spurts before five months. By the time they reach six months, their growth has slowed down considerably. The average male will weigh about 53 pounds, while females weigh 46 pounds. They have not reached their full adult weight yet, but they are very close. Because their growth has slowed down so much, though, they will continue to grow for a long time to come. This is normal. It is also normal if your dog retains their somewhat skinny appearance for a few more months to come. When is a German Shepherd fully grown? Female German Shepherds often stop growing at around two years. Males may continue to grow for another six months or so. The exact time that each dog stops growing depends on genetics and their diet. This can make them grow too fast, which can mess up their joints and cause other health problems. In fact, hip dysplasia is much more likely in dogs that were improperly fed as puppies. Instead, we recommend patience. Dogs may not grow evenly. Many may reach their full height before gaining much of their muscle mass and fat. Dogs are a lot like children in this way. They grow at their own pace. While these dogs reach sexual maturity before they are fully grown, it is generally not recommended to breed them until they have reached their full size. Otherwise, it can stunt their growth and potentially cause health problems for the mother and the puppies. Do German Shepherds Grow Fast? Generally, German Shepherds grow rather fast in their first six months of life. They will double their weight many times in this period and undergo many growth spurts. However, after five to six months, it will begin to slow down substantially. While they will almost reach their full size at about six months, it will take them until they are about two to finally gain those last few dozen pounds. Why is my German Shepherd so small? German Shepherds all grow in a unique fashion, similarly to people. For this reason, a German Shepherd may not seem to be growing much at all, only to hit a growth spurt. Your dog may seem small compared to other German Shepherds while still being in the normal range. This increases their risk for many health problems, including hip dysplasia. The dog needs to grow at their natural rate. A dog can simply be smaller than normal but completely healthy. Some German Shepherds have been crossed with other kinds of shepherd — these dogs are likely to not grow at the same rate as their pure-bred peers, too. Do not make the mistake and keep your German Shepherd outside most of the time. These dogs get highly attached to their humans and want to spend time with them! If your dog lives outside and is experiencing stunted growth, he may be refusing food due to loneliness. Make sure to take him to a vet — and in addition, let him spend time inside with you!
