Holly is always very knowledgeable about her puppies and it makes you feel very safe about making this big of a life decision. I am now obsessed with our two Coltrievers, and am excited to have them apart of our life forever! Since they are known to shed frequently, they can cause allergies and other irritations. The basic grooming processes needed are: Brushing their furs weekly with a solid bristle brush to prevent them from shedding their coats too much; Cleaning their ears weekly to prevent ear infections; Bathing of one to two times a month; and Having their nails trimmed once they get too long. For first time owners who do not have experience with grooming dogs, this can be difficult because this breed requires high-maintenance grooming. You should see a veterinarian first to ask the grooming practices necessary for your dog. You need to follow the practices always. Excessive shedding is possible, so bath should be given at most twice a month. Their skins can also dry out if bathing is done irregularly. When bathing your dog, use a shampoo specialized for their furs to keep the quality. This mix is also prone to ear infections. Caring for your boxer Boxers are fun and active dogs who can be high maintenance due to their exercise needs. If you love getting out and about walking, they could be a good breed for you! A large secure garden is a must if you have a Boxer so they have plenty of space to blow off steam. Boxers can be very boisterous so do better with an experienced and patient! Boxers and barking Your Boxer is likely to make noise and how much they do make will be down to their training and personality. Boxers are naturally very good guard dogs and so are more likely to bark to make their owners aware of any comings and goings around the home. Training and socialisation Boxers are clever dogs but can be boisterous, so positive, reward-based training from a young age is really important. Boxers mature a lot slower than other breeds, so having a large amount of puppy energy in such a big dog can be challenging for some owners. You need to handle your Boxer with a firm but fair attitude and make sure you are patient and consistent. They can be boisterous so make sure you train them not to jump up at people from a young age. Boxers love human company so can develop separation anxiety if left alone. If they are alone or bored, they like to chew which means your furniture and belongings will be at risk! Exercise Boxers are very high energy, active dogs who love playing and being involved in everything going on. They keep their puppy attitude longer than most dogs so you might find your Boxer rarely has a calm moment at home! Your Boxer will need a minimum of two hours exercise every day. This should be split into a few walks with plenty of opportunities for sniffing around and exploring. You should also give your Boxer plenty of time to exercise off lead somewhere secure so they can have a good run around. On top of this, your Boxer will also need regular, short training sessions. They will also need lots of playtime and free time in the garden to do what they want. Grooming Boxers are fairly low maintenance when it comes to grooming. They have short fur which only needs a weekly brush to keep it in good condition. As with any dog, you should expect your Boxer to shed throughout the year, more so in spring and autumn. A regular hoover should be enough to keep on top of it. Due to the excess skin around their faces, Boxers are at risk of developing a condition called skin fold dermatitis. Boxers and children Generally speaking, Boxers are good around children of all ages given the right training. An adult only home or one with teenagers is better for a Boxer. Always supervise your dog with children and vulnerable adults. Puppy socialisation classes are a great way to get your pup used to new dogs. Early socialisation will help your dog get along well other dogs as an adult. They may get along OK with a cat they have grown up with, but you should always supervise your Boxer with smaller pets. Your vet will be able to tell you how much your Boxer should be eating. You should feed them a good quality, commercially available, complete dog food. We usually recommend splitting their daily allowance into two meals. If you give your dog the occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily allowance. Try to feed your dog at similar times every day as they like routine. Remember to leave a gap between eating and exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet higher standards. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. They are super hyper, highly inquisitive and importantly are never happy just 'being' for long periods of time. Dogs are the same. Boxers can become hyper if they have nothing to focus on. Just left to 'be', they can get bored and have trouble knowing what to do, so they run around… they quite literally can end up bouncing off the walls in an overly hyper state with no real tools to calm themselves down. Now, if you take that same hyper Boxer dog and he is taken out for walks twice per day, plays one-on-one with his owner once a day AND is given indoor task that require him to use his canine senses, he'll be a much happier and calmer dog. The mention of canine senses is rather vital here…. Dogs have urges to use their sense of smell… to sniff… to explore with their noses …. It's the way it has been for thousands of years and it's a canine urge that is not going to go away no matter how pampered or spoiled a life a dog lives. So dogs have this innate craving to sniff after scents that builds up each day if not allowed to really use this, it can cause a dog to become frustrated. So, an indoor game that involves a Boxer using his sense of smell along with a task that requires focus is often an integral part of preventing hyper behavior and giving a dog a feeling of accomplishment that can work with the other elements to keep him calm. You might be thinking that you'll have to invest in some sort of intricate canine version of Sudoku. Not at all. This is as easy as hiding some treats in the house and encouraging your Boxer dog to find them. As with cardio mentioned earlier, the energy level and enthusiasm of the owner plays a huge part in how eager a Boxer will be to follow through. Speak with in an animated voice and encourage your dog to seek out the hidden treats. Start with easy to find hiding places and then work up to much more difficult sessions. Once a dog learns that it's time to play the game, he often will not give up and will search until he finds his treasure. Advanced sessions can include having the reward be deep in a cardboard box under layers of old towels and safe odds-and-ends and be sure that the treat itself has a strong scent; a good choice is a strip of bacon grease blotted out because most dogs won't bother to move much for a food that they will receive at any rate. Be sure to use a command word such as 'Find' or 'Go Get' and a word to end the session such as 'Good, Find' or 'Good, Get' to establish when this begins and when this ends. You don't have to do this every day; 2 or 3 days a week is usually enough to make a Boxer dog happy and work in conjunction with the other methods to keep hyper behavior at bay and encourage a more calming atmosphere when you just want your dog to settle down. In addition to this, teaching a Boxer to Heel is always advantageous and not only will keep him calm when out on a walk around the neighborhood but will also keep him appropriately by your side in high energy situations where a dog can become hyper just by picking up the vibe of an event. The size of a dog's world is exactly the size that an owner allows it to be. Dogs that are not used to seeing cars and people walking about will often bark like mad when they do actually see them. Dogs that are not used to being out in public will act inappropriately because they have not been exposed enough to know how to stay calm. Dogs that rarely see a visitor to the house will often jump and act overly excited on those few occasions that someone new enters into their territory. Boxers should be gradually exposed to the many situations, places, people and other pets that exist in the world. If you stayed inside your home… only venturing into your yard and nowhere else for years and were suddenly plopped down in to Times Square, you wouldn't be so calm either; that's how dogs feel if they are isolated and not given the opportunity to slowly learn about the world and all that is in it. Go to parks, bring your Boxer along to run errands, bring him hiking, change up the walking routes, take the time to say hello when you pass by another owner with his dog, have him outside with you while you wash the car, bring him to the beach… unless there are big signs saying 'no dogs allowed' bring him along and let him experience the sights and sounds of the world. Hyperkinesis - Being clinically hyperactive is often misdiagnosed. Most dogs simply need the physical and mental releases as we discussed above. These highly sensitive dogs can be set off into a frenzy by everyday simple noises such as microwave beeping or normal household events such as someone zipping down the staircase. For these rare cases, thorough testing must be performed, which should include a 2 to 3 day stay at an veterinary hospital where vitals are monitored, both heart and respiratory rates, when both at rest and when stimuli is introduced. If this is diagnosed, stimulants similar to those that are given to humans with ADHD can be helpful as are vet supervised changes to the diet and possible supplements of L-theanine, GABA and valerian root. Senior Issues - In some cases, a senior dog will be unable to stay calm and this is often related to either cognitive decline, health issues that are causing discomfort or a combination of the two. Physical discomfort often associated with arthritis can cause a dog to have trouble resting or sleeping. Food Allergies - While we have not seen any studies showing specifics, veterinary medicine claims that canines may have food allergies that can lead to abnormal behavior including acting hyper and having an inability to calm down. With all the high levels of chemicals found in many manufactured foods, it's easy to believe this could be the case. When a dog is constantly ingesting artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and all kinds of chemical preservatives, this is not good for physical health and it's not a huge leap from there to a dog's mental health as well. If this is suspected, a change to home cooked food or a switch to a quality commercial brand without these elements should be considered. So I invested in a harness and long line never attach a long line to a collar and went back to basics. There are must haves and nice to haves. Make sure the must haves are ready before bringing puppy home. What are the puppy essentials? Check what your puppy is being fed by the breeder and buy this to begin with. Your puppy may be stressed by the upheaval of leaving home so offer food they are familiar with. Once your puppy has settled, you can gradually change to the food of your choice. You can buy puppy training pads for toilet training which are more absorbent than newspaper and supposedly scented to encourage use, however good old fashioned newspaper is more environmentally friendly and certainly cheaper — ask friends and family to save their newspapers for you so you have a stockpile ready. Toys and chews. Chewing is normal helps relieve anxiety and boredom as well as bringing comfort from teething. It is a legal requirement for dogs to wear ID, not just microchip so get your puppy used to wearing a collar and tag as soon as possible. Grooming products. Some breeds will require daily grooming and so it is important that they get used to a brush early. Grooming is a good way to bond and allows you to inspect your dog for any lumps and bumps and ticks! Venturing outdoors! Going for walks is one of the great pleasures of dog ownership. Search on Facebook for local, like minded groups in your area. I still use the long line with Bosun unless we are familiar with the dogs on the field and know they are happy to run and play. The line gives him some freedom whilst providing me with some security in case his recall fails. Meeting in an organised group gives him an opportunity to learn how to behave around other dogs in a planned way. The next 12 months… Bosun will be joining the family on his first camping trip and there will be a blog on this to follow! Saturday, late morning he started having trouble getting up and dragged his back leg. It broke my heart to see him like that. I was so encouraged and glad he was feeling better. Monday morning we were still concerned and Tim took Irish in to see the Vet and he discovered a tumor and cancer of the prostrate. He was scheduled to come back to the Vet the next morning at a. He tried all day and evening to urinate and nothing would come out. The next day, September 11th was his 9th Birthday. He was on my lap that evening for a couple of hours and slept as I petted him. He felt that it was time. We were both sobbing uncontrollably and were with Irish as he took his final breath. He went quickly and we were with him but I will never forget that. It was horrible and it was agonizingly painful for both of us. Even to the end he was kissing us and wagging his tail. I walked around the first day numb, in shock and crying. I cried the next day and the day after that. Our home feels empty without him and our other dog Bailey kept looking for Irish the first few days. He misses him too. Irish was my first dog and I loved him so much. I had no idea of the pain and sadness I would feel upon his passing. It is overwhelming. I read as much as I could about grieving over the loss of a dog, searching for anything that would help me, to ease the pain. I talked a lot about it with Tim and with friends, I cried, I screamed that first day alone in my car with the windows up, and it all helped. It helped to talk about it with friends who cared and understood — who were also dog lovers. It helped to cry and it helped to scream. Tim and I talk about Irish all the time and we miss him — he filled the house with his presence. With each passing day the pain has gotten better. I try to keep busy and I try hard to remember happy memories and not the memories of his last day. I can talk about Irish without crying now, I can smile at funny things he did and I can smile when I look at all the pictures I have taken of him over the years. I miss him so much and I think I probably will always miss him but the pain is slowly lessening and I can now laugh again. As part of grieving, I read a suggestion to write a tribute. A Tribute for Irish follows; an ingredient for a recipe of healing. All that changed within a short span of 30 minutes. There were two Boxer puppies left; one was all white and the other, soon to become my first dog was a beautiful little fawn boy who we named Irish. Tim drove and I held Irish in my lap. The moment that changed my life forever occurred within 30 minutes. Irish settled comfortably in my lap and to my utter amazement and astonishment he looked up with his puppy blue eyes directly into my eyes. It was love at first sight, so to speak, and from that moment on he was endeared to my heart. Oh … he was such a bad puppy! He chewed our bay window and door moldings, and chewed my shoes! That was forgotten as he turned into such a good loving dog. As a puppy and young dog Irish was so full of energy and playfulness! When I would let him outside he would run and run and run around the yard going faster and faster. It seemed he had an endless supply of energy. He loved to play ball and was really, really good at it! We would throw the ball high in the air and he could catch it out of the air. One of his many nick names was ball ball doggie. He could play ball for hours. When we were inside the house he was always bringing us balls or toys to play tug with. I would chase him around the dining room table and house and try to catch him. When I got a new cell phone and tried out the different ring tones for some reason that made him howl … it was so funny when he did that. Irish loved flowers! When we were outside often times we would see Irish smelling the flowers! When I was gardening I had to make sure I kept my gardening gloves close by otherwise he would pick them up in his mouth and run with them. He was such a clown and made us laugh. He was always at the door to greet me with his wagging tail when I came home. I would often tease Tim that Irish was happier to see me than he was! Irish followed me around the house and always wanted to go outside with me — he loved laying in the sun and walks around the neighborhood. He was so full of life and energy. As Irish got older he slowed down but still liked to play. He was fascinated with our laser light and would chase it and try to pounce on it. It was hysterical to watch. He was a great companion to our other dog Bailey and the two became very close. He and Bailey chased squirrels in the yard. It was comical to watch because before they ran after the squirrels Irish would look at Bailey, and Bailey would look at Irish it was their sign and off running they would go to chase the squirrels! Irish would bark at everyone that walked by letting them know he was here! He was very protective of me. Irish was so loving and sensitive to my feelings. One day I had been upset and I was sitting near him crying, he came over and put his paws on my shoulders and looked at me as if to comfort me. Jersey, Channel Islands What I'm going to say might sound really negative, but I feel that I have to say it for the benefit of the puppies.It's really not a good idea to get two puppies at once. Very occasionally, it can work out ok - but it is never optimal. Puppies need a lot of individual time and attention. IMO it simply isn't possible to give the puppy the same amount of individual time and attention they would receive in a household where they were the only puppy, if they are homed together. Puppies homed together tend to be seen as one homogenous unit - 'the puppies' or 'the girls' or 'the boys' or 'the dogs' - and not invested in, as individuals, as they would be if they were the only dog in the home. There is such a thing as 'littermate syndrome' which is quite common amongst puppies raised together - as a behaviourist, I see several cases a year of it. The last case I saw, there ended up being one confident dog and the other dog was very timid, especially when her sister wasn't with her. She had attached to her sister and didn't feel safe when she wasn't around. The owner had taken them both out together to 'socialise' them, and together she hadn't even noticed that one pup wasn't really interacting with the world and she seemed fine when her sister was with her. The reality is that her sister had received most attention and the timid pup had been able to fade into the background more and not to be 'noticed'.The case I saw before that, someone had gotten two puppies which just played together the whole time in rough play. They had taken them out to 'socialise' them, but they weren't very interested in looking at the world and learning about it - they just wanted to get to each other all the time and play. The case I saw before THAT, was two siblings which had been fine together during puppyhood but had now started to fight in adolescence. The owner returned home one day and found one puppy with a bite wound dripping blood. On adolescence, dogs enter sexual maturity and if dogs are too 'similar' in age - particularly if they are the same sex - they can start to fight because they experience each other as more of a threat. With puppies of difference sexes, it's almost going to force early neutering on you to prevent unwanted matings and puppies - not ideal. There is clearly a lot of appeal to the idea. You might disagree with your family about which puppy is best and think it will sort the argument out. You might think two are equally adorable. Or even be concerned about him feeling lonely when you need to leave the house. But there are a lot of factors you need to take into account to make the right decision. Bonding With Your Puppy Two puppies of the same or a similar age, form a terrific bond. Unfortunately this bond is often at the expense of a bond with the owner.
